With the 2021 MLB Draft two months away, ESPN's first mock has the Mets selecting UCLA second baseman Matt McLain at No. 10 overall.
McLain broke his thumb last week and will miss some time, but ESPN's Kiley McDaniel doesn't feel it will impact his draft stock.
The 21-year-old McLain is hitting .325 with nine homers, eight doubles, two triples, nine stolen bases, 27 RBI, and 38 runs scored in 39 games this season.
Mack’s spin -
I have McLaon ranked as a shortstop, but many project him as a future major league second baseman.
If that is true, he would be at the top of the list in that category.

A look at Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake High School.Currently ranked #1 in California and #3 in the country. Was 1-2 on the day with a walk and IBB. Beautiful swing from the left side, also stole a few bags.
Mack’s spin -
I now have Mayer being drafted 1.2, right behind fellow shortstop, Jordan Lawler.
5-11-21 - Randy Leeson @rleesonofficial
Really have been impressed with Ben Kudrna. Love the arm angle, great size and an effortless delivery. Would be a great option for the Cubs in the upcoming MLB draft.
Mack’s spin -
Kudma is one of the many talented RHP that will be picked in the 2-4th round range.
I currently have him as my 36th righty.
5-11-21 - Carlos Collazo @CarlosACollazo
Disappointing to hear that Ole Miss RHP Gunnar Hoglund will have to undergo Tommy John surgery with a UCL tear. He seemed like a pretty solid lock to go inside the top 10 picks. Arguably the best command in the 2021 draft class.
Mack’s spin -
Like Jaden Hill before him, this one hurts and sucks at the same time.
Some now project him as a 2nd round pick, but I have dropped him in the four round range. College pitchers are old enough without two years of healing and rehab.

Jud Fabian, OF, Florida (No. 28)
We wrote about a mechanical adjustment Fabian implemented in last week’s stock watch, and after a 4-for-9 weekend that featured two home runs, a double, five walks and just one strikeout, Fabian’s strikeout rate is down to 27.7%. Fabian is one of the most interesting prospects in the class and one of the most difficult to find consensus on among scouts. His strikeout rate will be one of the most interesting numbers to watch as the season progresses, but don’t sleep on the fact that his 18 home runs are among the top five of Division I hitters.
Mack’s spin -
A lot of draft pundits are concerned with Fabian’s K/AB rate. Fully understood.
Still, I have him as my 4th outfielder
5-11-21 - Motor City Bengals -
Henry Davis – We’ve written about Davis in nearly every update this year, as he has been one of the most consistent performers in college baseball all season. He has a chance to be an above-average hitter with above-average game power, and while he’s still a little raw defensively, he has a plus-plus arm. He’s a legitimate option for the Tigers.
Mack’s spin -
Davis continues to sit on top of my catcher’s board.
I now have him as my 3rd pick overall.
5-11-21 - Motor City Bengals -
Adrian Del Castillo – Del Castillo came into the season as a potential top-five pick, but he doesn’t project to be more than average on defense, and he just hasn’t done enough damage with the bat. He’s still likely to go in the top 20.
Mack’s spin -
I now have Del Castillo as my 3rd catcher behind the rocketing Mat Nelson.
5-11-21 - Motor City Bengals -
Matheu Nelson – Few players on the planet have been hotter than Nelson over the last month. He now leads all of college baseball in slugging percentage and home runs, and he’s a decent defender who is adept at blocking balls and shows above-average arm strength. He could end up going in the first round if a team thinks they can help improve his receiving.
Mack’s spin -
My recently annointed second catcher will probably project out as a late first round pick in my mock listing that I am updating this month.
5-11-21 - Motor City Bengals -
Luca Tresh – Tresh got off to an amazing start this season, with seven home runs in his first eight games. He has cooled off considerably in the last month, with just one home run, but he’s still a potentially average defensive catcher with a plus arm and plus raw power, so there’s a good chance he lands in the first round.
Mack’s spin -
I have Tresh coming off my board as the 10th catcher.
5-11-21 - Motor City Bengals -
Hunter Goodman – Goodman has always been known for his plus power potential, but his big leg kick and steep swing path are reminiscent of Jake Rogers, and he has had some strikeout issues. He’s doing a better job of drawing walks this year, but he can’t fall back on his defensive tools like Rogers. Goodman does have an above-average arm, but he’s raw in every other area, and he may eventually move to left field.
Mack’s spin -
The 7th catcher on my board.

I could live with McClain round one and del Castillo round 2.
How did Cal Ripken ever stay healthy that long?
You are going bats Tom.
Me?
1st Round - RHP Sam Bachman
2nd Round - RHP Gavin Williams
Steve Cohen will buy this team all the bats they need but no one trades young stud starters.
You have to draft and develop them yourself.
You right Mack
I haven’t seen much about the Lefty from Michigan you projected a while ago
I still like Steve Haijar but I just like Bachman more since he started consistently hitting 101.
Mack, I hear you, but if right now, the Mets had a hitting surplus and Kelenic coming up, a team would not trade a top pitching prospect like Manoah for him? A Kelenic is a brand, if he is that good, and not just Conforto good, and plays every day.
We have Ginn and Allan (eventually) and Megill and Szapucki - hopefully, at least two will be viable starters.
Speaking of Megill, he goes up against Passantino, a guy who has not allowed an earned run this year (5 IP, 9 Ks) and is 17-3 lifetime. Let's see how our big boy does.
Bachman 101 is attractive, as long as they don't expect him to disappear for 2 years.
