With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning at Wrigley Field, Gary Gentry gives up his only hit, a short fly hit by Ernie Banks that outfielder Dave Marshall gets a glove on, but he cannot hold on to the ball. The 23 year-old Mets right-hander settles for a one-hit complete game 4-0 victory over Chicago but could have been the first hurler in franchise history to throw a no-hit game if official scorer Jim Enright had ruled differently on the blooper to left field.

2000

A day after failing to hustle, turning a likely double into a single, a disgruntled Rickey Henderson is let go by the Mets. The 41 year-old stolen base leader is batting .219 with no homers and two RBIs at the time of his release.

1972 - Buzz Capra is the winning pitcher in a 1 - 0 Mets victory over the San Francisco Giants. Capra's first major league RBI - a 2nd-inning single scoring Cleon Jones - is the only run of the game.

1980 - Ray Knight of the Cincinnati Reds hits two home runs in the 5th inning - including a grand slam - to lead the Reds to a 15 - 4 rout of the New York Mets.

Gus - it is my understanding that he is running for Mayor of Stamford CT - his home town. Post link is up above unless there was a different article.

He also talked about players HBP and body armor - saying if a player is hit on body armor - first base should not be awarded.

BV has always been a fresh, independent thinking. While I'm not keen on his solution, there's no question there's a problem with the HBP totals.

From what I recall, the seasons with all-time high HBP numbers were the last four seasons in baseball. We are seeing more and more players getting hit on the hands, going on the IL.

There are a number of reasons for this. Batters are crowding the plate. Wearing protective pads. Making little effort to get out of the way. All of that is true.

But also they are forced to start early, commit early, because of the speeds they are consistently facing.

Pitchers are trying hard to establish the inside pitch, especially up and in, at the elbow, because that's where bat speed is the slowest.

The scariest thing about all this is when you factor in the new emphasis on the high fastball, it is easy to predict more beanings, more pitches that are high and tight, with batters seemingly unable or unwilling or just plain vulnerable to that pitch.

I like that MLB is experimenting with the 61-foot mound. Be interesting to see the results of that. The protective padding is here to stay.

I also think umpires need to do a better job at enforcing the rules when a batter makes no effort to get out of the way.

All in all, a perfect storm: there's no villains in this, but the HBP rates are alarming and I do worry about the beanings.

In conclusion: much of the problem rises from increased velocity.

Personally, I see women's softball as essentially unwatchable. The mound is too close! So many strikeouts, so many batters overwhelmed. It's a boring, boring game. The field seems wrong, the mounds, the basepaths, the whole thing. I'm always amazed that they don't do anything to address it.
