Tom Brennan - MY FAVORITE OFF-RADAR METS PROSPECTS - BRYCE MONTES DE OCA

I love unranked prospects with real potential.  One of them is:

Bryce Montes de Oca, who was drafted in the 9th round in 2018 and never officially pitched until this season due to injury.  Tommy John, to be precise.

That is some delay, huh?

He is pictured above - the just-turned-25-year-old sure looks like a no-nonsense dude, huh?

Some guys smile, a la Nimmo.  Others, like Montes de Oca?

A look that says ALL BUSINESS.

A look that perhaps says DON'T DIG INTO THE BATTERS' BOX TOO MUCH.

The Urban Dictionary says "Montes de Oca" means "Large Hills With an Oak Forest on Top."

One thing that Bryce is, is LARGE.  He is a 6'7" 265 lb righty TREE TRUNK.  Wes Unseld size.  Who just happens to throw 100 or so.

Big Brennan fave Tylor Megill is also 6'7", but listed at "just" 230.

Interestingly, this "Large Tree" de Oca that never pitched a pro inning got assigned directly to High A Brooklyn, skipping St. Lucie.

Through Saturday, it seemed he was assigned that high for good reason: he has thrown 4.2 IP in relief, fanned 5 and has yet to allow his first pro hit.  Do Large Trees ever allow hits?  Maybe not.  Especially to hitters who use wood bats and use pine tar.

He has, though, walked 4, so we'll see if his control is an issue as he gets into some more games.

100 MPH dudes don't grow on trees, even large trees, so maybe we'll see him in Queens before too long.

Mack first started tracking Bryce while he was in high school in 2013.  Amazing.

Hopefully, de Oca is like a coiled spring and really makes up for lost time.
