Tom's Tidbits: Mets' Orbit Trajectory is Closer to Earth

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO, THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY FOR MEXICAN PLUMBERS.

First, someone who is NOT back to earth...Tyrone Taylor.

Lots of complaints - mine included - over his and others' lack of early season hitting.

A friend of mine who used to play ball was totally down on Taylor, who is quite the fielder and still swift afoot.  Wanted Taylor to pack his bags.

But thankfully, Tyrone, in his last 7 games, goes a sizzling 10 for 19. And raises his average 75 points to .244, just 12 points behind the $765 million man.

But two losses nonetheless, despite Taylor getting on base a bunch of times, and the Mets orbital satellite is dropping lower in the upper atmosphere.

I did not see the DH yesterday, but I was listening in game 1, in the 8th inning,  It was where the Mets had cut a 6-3 deficit to 6-5, bags full, one out, and Pete Alonso up.

It seems he was punched out by the ump on a 3-2 count that should have been ball 4.  Had he walked, most likely, they win.  That's how come teams don't win 110 games.

Blade Tidwell - did not see him - did see his box score - it was ugly.

Thoughts?  Why did he get hammered?

I blame Brandon Sproat - he should have been ready to take that start, but wasn't.  Why?  Because he's been pitching worse than Tidwell.

Lastly, in game 2, Tylor Megill was not sharp, but the Mets did something so reminiscent of the dull, dreary Mets anemic hitting years, to lose another 1 run game.

They pummeled Cardinal starter Pallante, who retired just 11 guys while allowing 9 hits and 4 walks, but only 4 runs - only to then be completely shut down by their reliever McGreevy for 5.1 scoreless innings on one hit.  Now, McGreevy is good, but...he just shut down the Mets cold.

Is McGreevy that good?  You tell me.

Jonah Tong Terrific continued his strikeout freak show in Binghamton, with 8 in 4 innings.  He now has a jaw-dropping 38 in 21 innings.  He needs to go deeper into games, but he is coming fast, as is Nolan McLean.

Anthony Nunez in Brooklyn?

0.00, 0.41 WHIP, 12.1 IP and 20 Ks. DUDE!

Gotta go.

Morning, Tom (still morning for me at least out here on the west coast). There are a bunch of pitchers in AA and below off to promising starts to the season. Fruits of a FO that both evaluates and develops talent far better than the org has done historically. In fact, the whole system looks a lot better than it has in years (and years). Good day for Tong, though still a lot of baserunners over four innings.

Also, don't look now, but my boy Will Lugo, who's had a couple of tough years due to injury and under-performance, 3-4 with a 2B and HR. Batting average (is that still at thing?) up to .328 and his power starting to show (he hits bombs, and yesterday's shot was a good example). He'll still be 23 all season, still getting time at SS (at 6'3, listed 230 lbs), but is really a 3B. If he keeps this up he's going to work his way back into the conversation by year's end.

Willie Mays Lugo. Stay healthy, young man. Play daily, and hit.
