Tom Brennan - The Concerns of the Day

As the Yankees leave the Bronx warmth…
And the Mets return to frigid Citi…

I wonder what he is thinking.

So…

Juanderful Juan Soto is out 2 to 3 weeks with his calf strain. Ouch.

Did it start to be strained running in cold game conditions weather?

I’d like to ask him that.

How badly or well will the Mets handle this relatively temporary loss of their premier offensive player?

Your thoughts?

I also wonder if they would have been able to keep him as a “don’t run out of the batter’s box” pinch hitter instead.

Thoughts?

One thought I had - he won’t be swiping 38 of 42 bases this year, as he did in 2025.

Maybe that SB # falls to … zero in 2026?

“Sir Lindor the Hamate” is also a concern.

He is 8 for 56 combined in both spring and regular season games, with exactly no homers and no RBIs.

That is pretty dismal.

When will he return to his former offensive prowess, and one has to wonder, in his zeal, did he return from his hamate removal surgery too soon?

Would an IL stint for him, calling up a Wyatt Young, or Jacob Reimer for a few weeks, make sense?  Wyatt could play SS, or Reimer could play 3rd with Bo B temporarily sliding over to shortstop.

Can Lindor’s wrist really heal properly and quickly playing every day?

Thoughts?

Hope Soto injury is one & done & not all season long. Expect him to DH more often as well. Tauchman would have been a good bench piece. This is Jared Young’s chance to shine. More games like the last SF game for him!

Cross off Lindor for the whole year. Hamate injuries take a year to get back, ask Alvarez. Put Mauricio at 3B, Vientos at 1B, BB at SS, and Polanco at DH. There’s your best lineup

Being someone to jump off the handle at the slightest opportunity, I feel that 10 days into a season is not time to make long term proclamations about who and how things need to change. I agree Mark Vientos needs to play until he cools off, but I can't abide by the Mauricio and Bichette moves while ghosting Lindor.

Vientos fits at 1B or DH but our resident Genius GM needed to sign Polanco and Bichette. Now it doesn't matter which way you try to set up the infield because you can't hide Bichette's glove anywhere unless you use him as a DH. But if you do that, Vientos has to play 3B while Baty, a better 3B sits. Lindor is not going to want to sit. Why is Semien not a backup for shortstop? wasn't he a great ss at one time?.

Young was projected by BB Ref at .229/.296/.423 for this season. I would take that.

Gus, hopefully, Lindor is not a total bust this year. Right now, he is Bud Harrelson on an off year.

Ronny Mo could turn Lindor into Wally Pipp.

Many good points and questions.

I noticed just-turned-23 year old Cam Smith already has 500 MLB PAs at has 3 HRs including a 462 foot bomb last night for the Astros. He was a 14th overall pick in 2024. Meanwhile our 11th and 14th picks from 2022, Parada and Jett, look like one future utility player. We literally suck at drafting impact hitters.
