3-29-14 - Luke Weaver — RHP Florida State — If I had to guess one place that wasn’t raining this weekend, Rhode Island would not be one of them but here we have Florida State and Boston College playing a gosh darned full baseball game in Kingston, Rhode Island. Pitching in said game was one Luke Weaver, who hurled a one-hit, complete game shutout against the Eagles. Weaver struck out just four and walked two but was incredibly efficient, needing just 105 pitches to complete his shutout. 3-18-14 – Jonathan Mayo - 3-18-14 – Jonathan Mayo - Colorado high school lefty David Peterson is hoping to be back on the mound at some point pre-Draft. The nearly 6-foot-7 southpaw from Regis High School suffered a broken fibula in his right leg and had surgery to put in a stainless-steel plate and nine screws two weeks ago. Peterson is currently in a boot and is only restricted by what he can tolerate, pain-wise. 3-24-14 - While some of the top college pitchers struggled Friday night, one shone on Saturday. Hartford began its weekend series against Binghamton with a Saturday doubleheader, pushing ace Sean Newcomb's start back a day. Newcomb, ranked No. 17 on MLB.com's top 50 Draft prospects, pitched well in a 3-0 victory. In eight scoreless innings, he struck out seven batters and allowed four hits and three walks. Five starts into the season, he has yet to give up an earned run, and he has 38 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings. Pitching at Hartford in the America East Conference, Newcomb doesn't face the same level of competition as some of the other top college pitchers. Regardless of his opponents, the big left-hander's stuff stacks up well with anyone in the country. He throws his fastball in the low- to mid-90s, and he mixes in a biting slider, curveball and changeup. When I saw him at the 2013 Under Armour All-American game at Wrigley Field over the summer, his stuff was electric. He was popping the mitt with his fastball, showing great late life, and his slider was filthy. Over 15.2 shutout innings this season, he has 30 K/4 BB and has allowed just five hits. 3-7-14 – C - Joey Morgan, Sr., Sisters (Ore.) - Morgan brings a well rounded skill set to the table, with sound receiving ability, a strong arm and blocks well. Offensively he brings good contact ability to the table with emerging strength and developing power. Colorado Rockies — Michael Gettys, OF, Gainesville HS (GA) - The latest in a long line of studs out of the state of Georgia, Gettys is a 6’-2”, 200 pound right-hander who has silly talent. His arm has been clocked at 100 mph from the outfield, he can run a 6.4/60 and his plus/plus speed shows up on the base paths as he swiped 38 bases over 32 games as a junior. The power is also there, and I saw him hit a shot to dead center field that went halfway up the bleachers at Wrigley. 2-11-14 – PG/Florida HS Dream Team – 3B – Joe Dunand, Sr. Gulliver Schools - Although listed as a primary shortstop, the PG scouting staff has seen Dunand play at a very high level at third base for Marucci Elite on the travel ball circuit. A strong 6-foot-2, 210-pound athlete, Dunand has shown smooth actions around the third base bag with soft hands and enough arm strength across to make the deep throw. His bat steadily improved throughout last summer and into the fall, showing better fluidity in his swing. The Middleboro, Massachusetts native attended Middleboro High School where he went 9-0 with a 0.46 ERA and three saves as a senior in 58 innings pitched. As a freshman, he made nine starts while going 2-4 with a 4.17 ERA in 45.1 innings pitched before suffering a season ending injury. His sophomore season saw him go 5-4 with a 3.75 ERA in 13 appearances (12 starts) while striking out 92 batters in only 72 innings pitched. He headed to Kennesaw State where he played in 56 games with 52 starts while accumulating a batting average of .277 with 16 doubles (tied for 2nd on team) and three triples, 23 runs and 23 RBI. However, the biggest difference for Beede this season could be the development of his low-80s changeup and potentially improved command. As a freshman, he had 89 K/7 BB over 89.2 innings and 40 of those strikeouts were looking. He was lights-out as a sophomore for LSU, going 12-1 over 17 starts with a 1.57 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 122 K/18 BB over 126 innings. 10-31-13 – TTF – Sean Newcomb shows a plus fastball that tops out at 96. He also features a cutter/slider, and a curveball. He’s also known to mix in a changeup. Not surprisingly, the fastball is easily his best pitch. The cutter/slider is solid. Improved command of his secondary pitches is a big key for Newcomb’s continued development. Mechanically, Newcomb features a relatively low effort delivery. He shows good arm speed, but occasionally struggles with maintaining his release point. He throws from a natural 3/4 arm slot, with clean, rather than whippy arm action. Pitchers are always injury risks to some extent, but Newcomb’s delivery doesn’t contain any red flags. At 6’5, he should get good downward plane, though he sometimes gets too low on his back leg, causing him to leave pitches up in the zone. Using an abbreviated leg lift, his mechanics stay consistent from the stretch. Sean Newcomb has the size and fastball velocity that teams covet.  In terms of delivery and frame, he is drawing comparisons to Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester. Everything he has shown so far indicates he will continue to improve. A 6-foot-2, 185-pounder, he had the lone hit against Burkholder, pulling a double inside the first-base bag in the fifth. Deichmann has a quick left-handed bat and solid speed, and he may have the arm and range to stay at shortstop. 10-25-13  - PG Showcase – The tournament’s first pool play time slot also put power arms on display with Grant Holmes (Conway, S.C. HS) and Alex Verdugo (Sahuaro HS, Tucson) throwing on opposite sides of the Marlins complex. Holmes, a strong-bodied righthander playing with the Evoshield Canes, worked between 91-93, peaking at 96 with two strikes on a hitter once, with excellent late life. He created lots of weak contact off the hands of righthanded hitters, and showed he could spot to both corners of the plate. 9-21-13 - The Trombley Nighthawks are on the short list of pre-tournament favorites but struggled in their first game due to an absolutely masterful pitching performance by Blue Wave righthanded pitcher Shaun Vetrovec in a 0-0 tie. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Cal-State Irvine commit threw a 96-pitch complete game one-hitter, allowing only a soft ground ball single to right field off the bat of PG All-American outfielder D.J. Peters. Over 53 games, he hit .306 with 12 doubles, seven home runs, stole eight bases and had a .420 OBP/.505 SLG. Lands closed and arm works across body at times but does not effect strikes. Boring FB gets on hitters in a hurry. In the starting role, its a fringy 7FB who can gear up to 8FB when needed. Shows the makings of a true, power 7SL. CB has late, softer wrinkle that adds different look to breaking ball. Still learning feel for CB spin. Heavy CH will play to contact. 9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 2 – Miami – RHSP Touki Toussaint – Coral Springs (FL) High School – The obvious ‘best player available’ here would have been RHP Tyler Beede out of Vanderbilt, but the Marlins do not want to get into a gigantic bonus negotiation with the college junior. They choose instead  a local high school senior they are banking on will sign for slot. It’s still a very good pick for a kid who is ranked in every top ten mock in the country. Very raw, but throws in the high 90s.

9-10-13 – Top Arms in 2013 Cape Cod League - Sean Newcomb 6-5/240, Wareham Gatemen 22.1 IP, 28 K, 4.43 ERA: FB 88-94 CB 69 SL 76-79 CH 81-83 -  Spent most of the summer recovering from illness, and this led to some inconsistency (high ERA). Newcomb is a big lefty that uses little effort to throw in the mid-90s, with a lot of late dive. 6-10-13 - Karsten Whitson, RHP, Florida - Whitson was a first round pick (9th overall, Padres) coming out of high school and was seen as a likely first round selection before undergoing a shoulder procedure and missing his junior year.  Assuming that he does not come to terms with the Nationals, they drafted him in the 37th round, Whitson will be one of the wildcards for 2014.  When right, he has easy velocity, touching 95 with good movement, a plus slider, and a nice change. from Don Olson 6/18/2013 - AJ Murray has a compact athletic build with some muscular development, good development through the wrists, should round out into a solid 225-230 athlete.  His Footwork around 1st needs work, looks a bit lost, but new to position that repetitions could smooth it out.  He did show the chops to play behind the plate as prep player.  AJ should be the catch full time next spring and value could soar.  At the plate, AJ shows a good quite setup, but a bit heavy lift and load.  He has mainly a compact swing that routinely finds the inner half of the ball, but it can get a tad long through the zone. He has the bat speed to keep the barrel on a solid line drive path, so the drop is negligent at this stage.  Shows gap power to all fields and with project-ability and strength left it could be power to all fields.  He really rides well with outside fastballs, and shows the ability to stay back and drive sliders. 6-27-14  -  Player:  Luke Weaver   Position:  RHP   School:  Florida State   Date of Birth:  8/21/1993   Height/Weight:  6’2/170   Bats/Throws:  R/R   2014 Class:  College Junior   Previously Drafted:  2011, 19th rd, Blue Jays  Scouting Report:  He throws from a ¾ to low ¾ arm slot and gives off a Bret Saberhagen type vibe.  The slot shows a bit of wrap, but decent three piece delivery.  Fastball was 91-94 (95).  Offering shows natural good hand side action on the 2S, some even off the 4S grip.  He works it around and shows solid command of the offering, attacks the lower half of the strike zone.  Luke’s change up has a solid amount of deception, shows depth and fades at times, looks to sit above average.  Slider has bite, can sweep at times, nice horizontal action glove side when throwing away at the RHH, will attack LHH inside with it.
