Justin Twine, Carson Sands, Bradley Zimmer, Mac Marshall, Mike Papi

5-11-14 - Justin Twine, SS/RHP, Falls City HS (TX) - A two-way standout in both baseball and football, Twine is a great athlete who has been a one-man wrecking crew for Falls City this season. At the plate, he is hitting .544/.672/1.196 over 16 games with six doubles, six triples, four home runs and has stolen 18 bases. He has drawn 16 walks to five strikeouts, showing a patient approach. On the mound, he has 49 K/8 BB over 21.1 innings, allowing just seven hits. At 5’-10” and 200 pounds, he has more upside as a position player where his speed (6.52/60) and strong arm will allow him to play at several positions. He is considered raw as he has split his time between sports, but he has all the tools and the power is already coming. Committed to TCU. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-high-school-players-rise-final-edition/42853#cZ17mE5vsjiSvU18.99

3-26-14 – TTF – 10 high school players on the rise — third edition – Carson Sands, RHP, North Florida Christian HS (FL) - In a huge match-up between Alex Destino of The First Academy, Sands was brilliant allowing one run on one hit over 6.2 innings, striking out 11 to one walk in a 7-1 win. Kiley McDaniel at Scoutingbaseball.com tweeted that he was hitting 92 mph with his fastball with plus life. For the season, he now has 45 K/11 BB over 24.2 innings, allowing 10 hits. The 6’-3”, 215 pound southpaw has a low-90s fastball with arm-side run and there is still room for more velocity as he matures. He has great mound presence and looks like a polished pro. He also shows two solid secondaries in a change-up and curveball. Committed to Florida State. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-high-school-players-rise-third-edition/42098#CmrUPUJfBWKiV2MO.99

3-21-14 - Dan Kirby ‏@DanMKirby  - Bradley Zimmer hitting .424/.473/.706 over 20 G with 5 2B, 5 HR, 9 SB. Cubs have to be looking at him at 4, best power/speed combo in draft.

Mac Marshall, LHP, Parkview HS (GA) - With a fastball that sits in the low-90s, an upper-70s curveball that shows plus potential, and an upper-70s change-up with a good feel, Marshall is one of the better southpaws available in the 2014 MLB draft. He is the best pitcher for one of the best programs in the country and is a big-game pitcher. Through 55.2 innings, he has 80 K/25 BB and has allowed just two runs on 24 hits. He could sneak into the first round and should be gone in the top-40 picks. Committed to LSU. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-high-school-players-rise-final-edition/42853#cZ17mE5vsjiSvU18.99

3-19-14 – TTF – Mike Papi, 1B/OF, Virginia (54) - When projected first-round pick Derek Fisher went down with a broken hamate bone in a series against Duke, Papi let the team know he could carry the load by responding with his bat. In the next game against James Madison, he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in a 13-2 win on March 11. Already a gifted hitter with a great approach from the left side, the 6’-3”, 215 pound junior is showing off the power most thought would come with his size. Through 18 games, he is hitting .338/.470/.600 with five home runs and has drawn 16 walks to 11 strikeouts. He is starting to gain late-first round attention. Fisher is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-college-players-rise-week-5/41905#JeRjl1lAwHFUPJlv.99

5/25/14

Jakson Reetz, Alex Jackson, Jeremy Vasquez, Spencer Turnbull, Bradley Zimmer, Mac Marshall

5-11-14  -  Jakson Reetz, C/OF, Norris HS (NE) - Reetz can play all over the field, and he can also hit the ball all over the field. He has proved no match for Nebraska pitching as he is hitting .588/.734/1.275 over 22 games with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 10 stolen bases. He has also drawn 22 walks and has struck out six times. His versatility makes him intriguing because of all the options he has. As a pitcher, he can hit the low-90s to go with an upper-70s slider. He can play the outfield where his arm would play well, third base where the arm and bat would play well, but catcher may be his best position, and he has all the tools to stick there. He may not be facing the best competition but he has always performed well on the showcase scene and is an alumni of Team USA Baseball. He is a day one talent but his commitment to Nebraska could make him a tough sign as there are a lot of family ties to the school. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-high-school-players-rise-final-edition/42853#cZ17mE5vsjiSvU18.99

3-16-14 – Cubs Den – It appears that Alex Jackson has emerged as the top bat in the draft.  He has the best bat speed in the draft and a plus plus arm that could play at C, 3B, or the OF, though there are some that believe Jackson prefers the OF.  He is a good athlete who handle a corner spot and should easily have the power to carry the position offensively.  He's experienced for a prep player, having started the showcase circuit as a junior in high school.  The Cubs tend to prefer college bats, but if they do go for  a high school bat, it'd be a guy like Jackson who has been tracked extensively and has more  experience vs. top competition than most people his age. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2014/03/mlb-draft-update-arms-ahead-of-bats-early-on-but-questions-remain-at-the-top/

3-26-14 – TTF – 10 high school players on the rise — third edition – Jeremy Vasquez, OF/1B, Martin County HS (FL) - Vasquez made the list last week, and he makes it again after going 14-for-20 over his last six games with nine doubles and six walks. For the season, he is now hitting a silly .596/.683/.958 over 15 games with 12 doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 walks to just three strikeouts. At 6’-1” and 200 pounds, he generates a ton of power from the left side and has an advanced approach at the plate — rarely missing a pitch. There will be added pressure put on his bat if he is relegated to first base, but the bat is special and the power is legit. One of the youngest players in his class, the upside is even greater. Committed to Florida. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-high-school-players-rise-third-edition/42098#CmrUPUJfBWKiV2MO.99

3-20-14 – Spencer Turnbull, RHP, Alabama - A power arm, the 6’-3”, 220 pound right-hander can touch 98 mph with his fastball and he adds an upper-70s curveball that is inconsistent but has a lot of potential. He also has some minor mechanical issues that need refining, but the Cubs have shown the confidence in selecting players who have a lot of potential but just need some tweaks here and there. Over 29.2 innings this season, he has a 0.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 26 K/15 BB, holding opponents to a .141 batting average. He also has allowed just one extra-base hit all season. Playing in the SEC, he will be facing great competition the rest of the way, making it easier for scouts to get a read on him. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2014/03/mlb-draft-a-look-at-5-college-arms-for-the-2nd-round/

3-19-14 – TTF – Bradley Zimmer, OF, San Francisco (12) - Zimmer is another guy who just keeps impressing, showing off all five tools this season. Over his last six games, he is hitting .417 with two home runs and four stolen bases. He is now up to .403/.446/.636 over 18 games with four doubles, four home runs and eight stolen bases. At 6’-5”, the left-handed hitter is showing what scouts wanted to see this year — in-game power. With his athleticism, speed and plus arm, he should stick at center field and might be the best power/speed prospect in the 2014 MLB draft. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-college-players-rise-week-5/41905#JeRjl1lAwHFUPJlv.99

3-17-14 – TTF – 10 High School Players On The Rise – Mac Marshall, LHP, Parkview HS (GA) - On March 14, Marshall struck out 10 to no walks over five no-hit innings. On the season, he now has 25 K/3 BB over 15 innings, allowing just five hits. One of the better southpaws in the 2014 MLB draft, Marshall’s fastball sits in the low/mid 90s, and he has worked hard on his delivery and command over the past year. His curveball also has plus potential. At 6’-2” and 185 pounds, he is a great athlete who has been clocked at 6.7 in the 60. Committed to LSU. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-high-school-players-rise-second-edition/41810#OfV5L7GbWgi2Xqtf.99

5/16/14

Cody Reed, Mac Marshall, Mike Papi, Marcus Wilson, Griffin Helms, Matt Imhof

5-12-14  -  Cody Reed, LHP, Ardmore HS (AL) - High school stats can look silly at times. When you have filthy stuff, and play at a small school facing inferior competition, the numbers can get out of control. Such is the case for Reed. Through 77 innings, he has 193 K/12 BB, allowing just 24 hits. To put that into perspective, he is on pace for 501 strikeouts over 200 innings. That would be a record and instant admission into the Hall of Fame. At 6’-2” and 240 pounds, he has been touching 95 mph and adds solid secondary stuff. He is a Vanderbilt commit and they have a good track record of keeping their commits. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-high-school-players-rise-final-edition/42853#cZ17mE5vsjiSvU18.99

3-14-14 - Nathan Rode ‏@NathanRode  - 2014 LHP Mac Marshall (Parkview HS, GA) getting warmed up for #NHSI14. 5 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 10 K tonight

3-6-14 – Prospect Insider - Virginia’s Mike Papi has been the top hitter on one of the nation’s top teams. He is hitting over .400 and has shown advanced pitch recognition skills as well as a quick bat. Although he currently plays first base, he shouldn’t be pigeon-holed into that position in the long run. He is a good enough athlete to handle one of the outfield corners.
http://prospectinsider.com/category/2014-mlb-draft

3-26-14 – MaxiPreps – Marcus Wilson, Serra (Gardena, Calif.) - Although his team lost 5-3 to Los Alamitos on Saturday, Wilson had a big day in going 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a home run. He is batting .545 on the season (6 for 11) with two home runs. http://www.maxpreps.com/news/kRbRSgP8z06XdyYf0_JnPg/tyler-kolek,-michael-gettys,-brady-aiken-among-senior-baseball-prospects-off-to-strong-starts.htm

3-12-14 – 10 High School Players on the Rise – Griffin Helms, C/OF, Norcross HS (GA) - Built like a linebacker at 6’-1” and 205 pounds, the right-hander has a mature body and is powerfully built. He is also a very good athlete having been timed at 6.59 in the 60. Defensively, his strong arm (1.85-1.9 pop times) and blocking/receiving skills make him a legitimate catching prospect. Offensively, his bat speed and approach allow him to wait on his pitch and drive it to all fields. Through his first six games, he was hitting .429/.520/.762 with a double, two home runs and six stolen bases. The catching crop is weak this year and Helms could benefit from it. Committed to Kennesaw State. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-high-school-players-rise/41773#oFu0m6JRyhOHXIwD.99

3-11-14 – TTF -  Matt Imhof, LHP, Cal Poly (51) - The 6’-5”, 225 pound southpaw just continues to blow away hitters. On March 7 against Seattle, he had 15 strikeouts to three walks over eight shutout innings, allowing four hits. Over four starts, he now has a 1.33 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 41 K/9 BB over 27 innings. He is second in the nation in strikeouts behind TCU southpaw Brandon Finnegan (45) and is third among starters with a 13.7 K/9 ratio. He will only be 20 years old come draft day, making him one of the youngest college players in the draft. His fastball sits in the 89-92 mph range and can touch 94 due to his smooth, effortless delivery. He adds solid secondary stuff and knows how to mix his pitches well. Looking more and more like a first round pick with every outing. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-college-players-rise-week-4/41715#PjStmsQ7UB5h8BYU.99

5/11/14

Michael Kopech, Mac Marshall, Sean Newcomb, Mike Papi, Joey Morgan

3-12-14 – 10 High School Players on the Rise – Michael Kopech, RHP, Mount Pleasant HS (TX) - The 6’-4” right-hander has been touching 96 mph with his fastball lately. When I saw him at the 2013 Under Armour All-American game at Wrigley Field over the summer, his stuff was electric. He was popping the mitt with his fastball, showing great late life, and his slider was filthy. Over 15.2 shutout innings this season, he has 30 K/4 BB and has allowed just five hits. He still has projection due to his size, loose frame and his cleaned-up mechanics. Committed to Arizona. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-high-school-players-rise/41773#oFu0m6JRyhOHXIwD.99

3-26-14 – MaxiPreps – Mac Marshall, Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) - The 6-foot-2 left-hander has yet to allow an earned run and has given up just six hits and one earned run in building a 4-0 record. He has struck out 32 batters in 20 innings pitched, including 11 in a win over Archer and 10 in a win over Shiloh. http://www.maxpreps.com/news/kRbRSgP8z06XdyYf0_JnPg/tyler-kolek,-michael-gettys,-brady-aiken-among-senior-baseball-prospects-off-to-strong-starts.htm

3-11-14 – TTF - Sean Newcomb, LHP, Hartford (15) - The 6’-5” southpaw has been extremely consistent this year. His first three starts have gone as follows: 5 IP 0 ER 3 H 9 K/3 BB - 5.2 IP 0 ER 3 H 6 K/3 BB - 7 IP 0 ER 2 H 8 K/3 BB - With a loose frame and easy delivery, he can touch the upper-90s with ease and he adds a slider that shows plus potential. He still needs to work on his command but he has great swing-and-miss stuff. His size, power from the left side and mechanics will have him off the board in the first half of the first round. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-10-college-players-rise-week-4/41715#PjStmsQ7UB5h8BYU.99

3-9-14 – MLB Draft Insider - Mike Papi – 1B/OF Virginia – Papi played first base and batted leadoff for the Cavaliers in a double header against Duke. He went one for four on the day scoring a run, striking out twice, and hitting his third home run of the year. In the second game Papi went zero for four with a strikeout. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/03/the-rundown-march-8/#more-3872

3-7-14 – C - Joey Morgan, Sr., Sisters (Ore.) - Morgan brings a well rounded skill set to the table, with sound receiving ability, a strong arm and blocks well. He also pitches at times with a low-mid 80s fastball and can contribute at this level on the mound. Offensively he brings good contact ability to the table with emerging strength and developing power. Justin Hancock's ability to square offspeed stuff as well as velocity combined with his athleticism defensively makes him an interesting projection prospect at this position, but Morgan gets the nod as the more advanced present player with plenty of talent in his own right.  http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9561

3/15/14

Draft 14 – Aaron Nola, Chad Sobotka, Mac Marshall, Shane Benes

1-20-14 – PG Preseason College All-Americans – Starting Pitcher - Aaron Nola, Louisiana State - 2013 Stats: 1.57 ERA, 126 IP, 122 K, 18 BB, .188 OPP BA] - The Tigers had one of the nation’s best teams and rotations last season, and it should be much of the same this spring with Nola and lefthanded pitcher Cody Glenn leading the charge. Nola, a 6-foot-1, 183-pounder, is Mr. Command out on the mound, as evidenced by his incredibly low walk total from last season. From a stuff standpoint, Nola has a fastball that typically sits in the low-90s. However, he can get up to 94 at times. Meanwhile, his curveball sits in the upper-70s, along with a low-80s changeup. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9294

1-23-14 - Number 28 on our countdown is junior RHP Chad Sobotka from South Carolina-Upstate. The 6’6 righty was a four year letter winner at Riverview High School. As a senior, he went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA with him named the team’s MVP. His freshman season with the Spartans saw him work out of the bullpen in all of his 25 appearances. He finished the year with a 3-0 record and an ERA of 1.72 while picking up 12 saves in 31.1 innings of work as he became the premier closer for the Spartans. He picked up several awards including being named to Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Honors, and NCBWA Freshman All-American. http://ht.ly/2DcZH4

1-3-14 – TTF Baseball - 22. Cleveland Indians — Mac Marshall, LHP, Parkview HS (GA) - One of the better southpaws in the 2014 MLB draft, Marshall’s fastball sits in the low/mid-90s and he has worked hard on his delivery and command over the past year. He also flashed a potential plus curveball at the Perfect Game Nationals. At 6’-2” and 185 pounds, he is a great athlete who has been clocked at 6.7 in the 60. As a junior, he had 80 K/32 BB over 46 innings for one of the premiere programs in the country. Committed to LSU. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-2/40753#ppGUqI6CbWFvzsPf.99

11-21-13 – BA Top 100 High School Players - 37 Shane Benes 3B/RHP R/R 6-3* 200 Westminster Academy, Town and Country, Mo. Missouri http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-high-school-top-100-with-commitments/

2/18/14

Draft 14 – Nick Burdi, Mac Marshall, Derek Hill, Evan Skoug

1-3-14 – TTF Baseball - 29. St. Louis Cardinals — Nick Burdi, RHP, Louisville - I just keep imagining a bullpen of Burdi, Trevor Rosenthal and Jason Motte — all three capable of hitting triple-digits on the radar gun. Burdi, a 6’-4”, 215 pound right-hander who most certainly will remain a reliever due to his lack of a third pitch, put together a monstrous season for Louisville last year. Over 35.2 innings, he posted a 0.76 ERA with 62 K/13 BB for a silly 15.7 K/9 ratio. Aside from his plus/plus fastball, he also adds a slider that sits in the 88-91 mph range and completely baffles hitters who are waiting on his fastball. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-2/40753#ppGUqI6CbWFvzsPf.99

12-9-13 – Pine Tar Press  -  26- LHP Mac Marshall Parkview HS (LSU Commit) 1/27/96- His HS has become a must stop for cross checkers the last 3 years with former first rounder’s Matt Olson and Josh Hart playing there. He comes in fast on hitters because of the drive in his delivery. He works with 3 pitches and has a change up that he uses a lot. A low 90’s guy now, Marshall is easy to dream on as a future #2 or 3 SP in the big leagues. (Dodgers @ 25) http://pinetarpress.com/early-look-2014-mlb-draft/

12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 26. Derek Hill, OF, Elk Grove HS (CA) - One of the better defensive outfielders in the 2014 MLB draft, the 6’-2” right-hander has been timed at 6.44 in the 60 and his arm has been clocked at 93 mph from the outfield. His instincts, route running and speed allow him to make highlight plays in center and he should stick at the premium position. At the plate, he shows good bat speed and developing power. Committed to Oregon. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99

Draft 14 – Mac Marshall, Brendan McKay, Kevin Steen, Lukas Schiraldi,Chase Vallot

draft - mac marshall10-15-13 – Baseball America - 15. Mac Marshall, lhp, Parkview HS, LiLburn, Ga.: Athletic lefthander with a low-90s fastball that touches 94 mph, a plus changeup and emerging curveball. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/

10-28-13 – Jim Callis - Left-hander Brendan McKay (Blackhawk High, Beaver Falls, Pa.) pitched very well in relief, striking out 10 in 4 2/3 innings as the DBacks rallied for a 4-3 victory. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder topped out at 89 mph with his fastball and sat in the 84-86 mph range, and the Royals never seemed to get good swings against it. He fanned both Cooley and Railey on fastballs. http://ht.ly/qeYJz

10-25-13  - PG Showcase – In relief of Toussaint was righthander Kevin Steen (Oak Ridge, Tenn., HS) who threw three sterling innings, primarily with his fastball. At 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds, Steen has a long, loose, projectable body and whippy arm, allowing his fastball to sit 90-91 mph in his first inning. Though his fastball eventually settled in the 87-89 range, his late life allowed him to carve through the Elite’s lineup, racking up six swing-and-misses and two strikeouts in his final inning. Steen commanded the zone, thanks to his athletic, repeatable delivery and fluid arm action, and also showed a 74-77 curveball with 10-5 shape. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/toussaint-wows-evaluators-at-jupiter/

10-29-13 - College Baseball Daily kicks off our countdown to the start of the 2014 College Baseball season by checking in on the top 100 players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.  We continue the list today at number 82 with University of Texas RHP Lukas Schiraldi. Before fully committing to the Longhorns staff, Schiraldi pitched at Navarro College where he dominated the Region XIV Athletic Conference in the NJCAA. Son of former Longhorn ace Calvin Schiraldi, Lukas has followed in his father’s footsteps and looks forward to potentially playing as a career. During his sophomore season with the Bulldogs, Schiraldi went 9-2 with a 2.84 ERA. In 76 IP the righty was able to strikeout 67 and quickly became a player to watch. http://ht.ly/2BaiSA

11/9/13

Draft 14 – Christian Ibarra, Kyle Schwarber, Chase Vallot, Mac Marshall, Jeff Hoffman

draft - christian Ibarra10-17-13 - College Baseball Daily kicks off our countdown to the start of the 2014 College Baseball season by checking in on the top 100 players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.  We continue the list today at number 89 with LSU’s third baseman Christian Ibarra. Before transferring to LSU for his junior season, Ibarra was a shortstop at Rio Hondo and earned All-State and All-Pacific Division Team recognition last season after batting .396 with 20 doubles, 6 HR, 40 runs and 50 RBIs in 45 games. The Marauders were 40-5 and made it to the California Final Four, the junior-college equivalent of a Super Regional. http://ht.ly/2AMUWG

10-14-13 – Top ’14 College Hitters - 5. Kyle Schwarber / C-1B / Indiana — The industry is higher on Schwarber than I am right now, with many believing the left-handed hitting backstop possesses 70 power and can stick behind the plate. I think his defensive position is more in question, however, and as a first baseman I don’t see a good enough bat to justify being a top ten pick. There’s plenty of time to prove me wrong, however. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/10/top-14-for-14-college-hitters/

9-30-13 – TTF Mock 2.0 - 34. Cleveland Indians — Chase Vallot, C, St. Thomas More HS (LA) One of the youngest players in the draft, the 6’-0”, 205-pound right-hander generates a ton of raw power due to his bat speed and strong wrists. His strong arm, size and footwork should allow him to stick at a premium position and he also has pretty good speed. Another player I got to see at Wrigley, he hit a couple bombs out of the park with ease and showed a polished approach at the plate during the game. Committed to Mississippi State. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-mock-draft-2-0-draft-order-set/38280#5E3F5j1jWOgE69bJ.99

9-29-13 – XMLBScout – 10.)RHP, Jeff Hoffman, East Carolina, 6'4 190, nice easy delivery with fb that reaches 95, most are 91-92 with life and boring action in on RHH, cb and change still coming along, both could be used to get outs in pro ball currently but need improvement at the ML level to be effective, appears to have enough stamina and strength to be a starter but has a loose enough arm that he could be effective best out of the bullpen. Definite one to watch for 2014, 1-3 round projection, for me 4-7 round seems fair. http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com/

10/19/13

Draft 14 – Luis Ortiz, Richard Boe, Mac Marshall, Max Pentacost, Jacob Gatewood

draft - luis ortiz9-29-13 – XMLBScout – 7.)RHP, Luis Ortiz, Hallmark Charter School, Sanger CA, 6'2 210, live arm, show quickness, all pitches from upper 3/4 slot, slider has proper spin, not the break and deception to be plus pitch, a work in progress still, fb has very good velo, pitch life however is fair, very straight - easy to read, also threw some straight changes with some deception, strong build, has some comps to Giovanni Gallardo, fb velo ranged from 90-94, most fb were 91-92, slider 80-82, change middle 70's, good looking arm for 2014, top 50 for sure. Fresno State commit. http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com/

9-30-13 – TTF Mock 2.0 - 25. Los Angeles Dodgers — Mac Marshall, LHP, Parkview HS (GA)  One of the better southpaws in the 2014 MLB draft, Marshall’s fastball sits in the low/mid-90s and he has worked hard on his delivery and command over the past year. Committed to Georgia. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-mock-draft-2-0-draft-order-set/38280#5E3F5j1jWOgE69bJ.99

10-6-13 – Kendall Rogers/PG – College Prospects -  10. Max Pentecost, c, Kennesaw State (Drafted: 2011, Rangers -- 7th round) - Pentecost was drafted relatively high out of high school, and should parlay his going to college into better draft stock and more money. Pentecost was the Perfect Game Summer Player of the Year, showcasing his skills at a high level at the Cape Cod League over the summer. Pentecost is a solid defensive catcher with a good arm and athletic actions. He also has much improved offensive skills with a consistent ability to square up secondary offerings. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9081

10-9-13 – Early Pick for Cubs - Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (CA) - If the Cubs decide to take the player who oozes potential but is still raw in some areas in the 2014 MLB draft, Gatewood could be the guy. At 6’-5”, he most likely will outgrow shortstop but his strong arm and athleticism could be a good fit for third base where his power potential would justify the hot corner. Another kid I got to see at Wrigley, he put on a show, winning the home run derby as he launched several bombs out of the park with ease. He also won the first annual high school home run derby at Citi Field during the All-Star break, hitting 14 home runs, several into the third deck. He isn’t a speed guy as he has been timed at 7.11 in the 60, but his combination of size and power separate him from others in his class. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-early-targets-chicago-cubs-fourth-overall-pick/38723

10/18/13

Draft 14 – Bradley Zimmer, Alex Verdugo, Michael Gettys, Grant Hockin, Mac Marshall

draft - bradley zimmer

9-30-13 – TTF Mock 2.0 - 33. Baltimore Orioles — Bradley Zimmer, OF, San Francisco  The younger brother of Royals prospect Kyle Zimmer, Bradley is a 6’-5”, 205-pound, left-handed hitter who has tremendous speed for his size. He also has a great arm and instincts in the field. Over 58 games as a sophomore, he hit .320/.437/.512 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and stole 19 bases. He also shows a great approach at the plate as he drew 29 walks to 31 strikeouts and was hit by a pitch a whopping 16 times, proving he’ll do whatever it takes to get on base. He showed off his wheels for The Collegiate National Team, swiping 11 of 12 bases over 21 games while also hitting an even .300. An exciting player who could shoot up draft boards with another impressive junior season.  http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-mock-draft-2-0-draft-order-set/38280#5E3F5j1jWOgE69bJ.99

8-21-13 – Area Code Games - 9. Alex Verdugo, lhp/of, Sahuaro, Tucson, Ariz./Chi Town Cream - One of the top two-way players in the class, Verdugo had a tremendous showing in Area Codes with the bat and on the mound. He took an impressive batting practice, hit well in games and showed above-average speed. With bat speed, power and a patient approach, Verdugo has feel to hit and good bat control. He was one of the most impressive pitchers of the event with a control of an 89-92 mph fastball that touched 93 with movement. The Arizona State commit commanded his curveball, a plus offering with 12-to-6 tilt and depth at its best. He will vary the shape of the offering depending upon the hitter and mixed in a low-80s changeup. His delivery and arm action are free and easy.  Verdugo struck out eight against one walk in his four innings and is young for the class. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/area-code-games-top-10-prospects/

9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 13 – OF Michael Gettys – Gainsville (GA) HS – Gettys could easily be drafted as a starting pitcher, but it’s his bat that’s going to get him to the major someday. Stood out at the 2013 18u WWBA National Championship. Showed some serious power at the Under Armour All-American Game home run derby at Wrigley Field that caused his summer stock to rise so rapidly. Throwing speed from outfield: 100

9-11-13 - Sully’s 2014 Top 100 MLB HS Draft Prospects – 80.Grant Hockin – RHP, Damien (CA) HS http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-2014-top-100-mlb-hs-draft-prospects/

8-21-13 – Area Code Games - 7. Mac Marshall, lhp, Parkview, Lilburn, Ga./Team Elite - At 6-foot, 187-pounds, Marshall has an athletic, angular build. Marshall offers athleticism, some present polish and projection. He gets downhill plane from a high three-quarter arm slot and sat 89-91 mph his fastball, which was up to 94 earlier in the summer. Marshall has feel for a high-70s changeup with fade that has the makings of an above-average offering and has shown the ability to spin a mid-70s curveball with 1-to-7 tilt. Originally committed to Georgia, where both of his parents attended, Marshall changed his commitment to Louisiana State lasted month. He attends the school that entered the 2013 season as No. 1 on the Baseball America High School Top 25, Parkview, which produced a 2013 first-rounder, outfielder Josh Hart, and a 2012 supplemental first-rounder in first baseman Matt Olson. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/area-code-games-top-10-prospects/

Draft 14 – Mac Marshall, Michael Cederoth, Justin Blatner, Luke Bonfield, Marcus Wilson

draft - mac marshall

8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - Mac Marshall (Parkview High School, Ga.) was 91-93, but the breaking-ball left a ton to be desired (scouts tell me it’s been inconsistent all year). http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-perfect-game-all-american-classic/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 10. Michael Cederoth, RHP, San Diego State- He is 6′-6“, 210 pounds and can touch 100 mph with his fastball. Shall I go on? He also adds a mid-80s slider, as well as a mid-80s change-up that is more of an out pitch. His command can be shaky at times as he is still learning how to be a pitcher instead of just running his overpowering fastball. Over 15 starts this year, he had a 4.25 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 109 K/48 BB over 95.1 innings. If he works on his command the way Jonathan Gray did last year, as well as refine his off-speed stuff, he should be one of the first college pitchers off the board. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

8-10-13 - New Balance Area Code games - For the Royals, right-hander Justin Blatner was interesting. He didn’t have big time velo at 83-85 MPH but was a side armer with good movement on his fastball. He’s tall and lean showing good athleticism. He’s committed to Gonzaga. http://prospectinsider.com/view/2013-area-codes:-day-4-notes/

2013 East Coast Pro Showcase Top 50 Prospects    - 14. Luke Bonfield – OF, Immaculata (NJ) HS - One of the best pure hitters in the class. Went 6-6 at National Showcase and continued to hit at ECP. Might be the best hitter in the country this summer. http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-top-50-ecp-prospects/

7-24-13  -  Marcus Wilson, of, Junipero Serra, Los Angeles/SGV Arsenal - Wilson offers projection as he fills his lean, wiry 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame. He has broad shoulders, a tapered waist and leans legs. Wilson, who is uncommitted, has athleticism, fluid actions and plus speed capable of 60-yard-dash times in the 6.5 range and home-to-first times around 4.1. The member of SGV Arsenal has arm strength and defensive prowess in center field. A righthanded hitter, Wilson has good bat speed and has shown the present ability to hit in games. Wilson is young for the class and will not be 18 until two months after the draft. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/tyler-koleks-heavy-fastball-among-tournament-of-stars-standouts/

8/18/13

Draft 14 – Mac Marshall, Travis Jones, Carl Chester, Grant Holmes, Brady Aiken

draft - mac marshall

8-6-13 - Top pitchers - East Coast Professional Showcase, Syracuse, NY -  2. Mac Marshall, LHP, Parkview HS (Ga.): Marshall had suffered a minor oblique injury at the Perfect Game showcase in Minneapolis, so this was his first time back on the mound. He clocked 90-92 mph, but typically throws much faster. But Marshall commanded his breaking stuff well and was very efficient. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130806&content_id=56048786&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

7-24-13  -  Travis Jones, of/3b, Atascocita, Humble, Texas/Columbia Angels - The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Jones is a tall, long and rangy athlete. He has long levers and room to fill his large frame. Jones, who is also a wide receiver on the football field, moves well laterally and is a long strider with plus straight-line speed. The Texas commit offers an interesting combination of hitting ability and power. He has some loft to his swing and has shown pull-side power. Jones has the athleticism to handle third or the outfield. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/tyler-koleks-heavy-fastball-among-tournament-of-stars-standouts/

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 15. Carl Chester, CF, Lake Brantley HS (FL) - 6'0/175, R/R, Draft Day Age: 18.48, Miami commit, Full Report & Video - Quick Take: Chester comes from the school that produced Mariners SS Nick Franklin and has another top round prospect for this year's draft, IF Tate Blackman, as one of the stronger teams in a completely loaded Orlando high school scene. Chester is a plus to plus-plus runner with great feel to hit in games and solid gap power. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

2013 East Coast Pro Showcase Top 50 Prospects    - 1. Grant Holmes – RHP, Conway (SC) HS - Sitting 92-94 with one of the best breaking balls in the class. He was up to 96 at the National Showcase. http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-top-50-ecp-prospects/

8-11-14 - Jeff Sullivan ‏@JSully12 - Brady Aiken - LHP, Cathedral Catholic (CA) HS sitting 91-92, touched 93

8/5/13

Draft 14 – Justus Sheffield, Dylan Cease, Mac Marshall, Jacob Gatewood, Bryce Carter

draft - justus sheffield

7-24-13  -  10. Justus Sheffield, lhp, Tullahoma (Tenn.)/Ohio Warhawks - Sheffield is a year younger than his brother, Jordan, who entered the spring as one of the top high school pitchers and was up to 97 mph before having Tommy John surgery in April. Both brothers are committed to Vanderbilt. Justus Sheffield has a strong, compact 6-foot, 190-pound build and has gotten a little leaner in the last year. His fastball can sit in the 90-92 mph in shorter stints and was up to 94 in the spring. He has an athletic delivery that features a high leg kick and throws from a three-quarter slot. His mid-70s changeup with fade could become an above-average pitch. Sheffield also throws a 75-78 mph breaking ball with three-quarter tilt. A good athlete, Sheffield has also shown potential in center field. Young for the class, Sheffield will turn 18 just prior to the draft. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/tyler-koleks-heavy-fastball-among-tournament-of-stars-standouts/

8-2-13 - Jeff Sullivan ‏@JSully12  - Dylan Cease - RHP, Milton (GA) HS sitting 95-96 in the 1st inning. 2 K pic.twitter.com/fMGNd718O0

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 14. Mac Marshall, LHP, Parkview HS (GA) - 6'2/185, Draft Day Age: 18.36, LSU commit, Full Report & Video - Quick Take: Marshall comes from a powerhouse Atlanta-area program that's produced RF Jeff Francoeur and first rounders in the past two years, 1B Matt Olson (Athletics) and CF Josh Hart (Orioles). Marshall sits 90-92 and has hit 94 mph with his fastball while his off-speed pitches are inconsistent but his 75-79 mph downer curveball and 79-82 mph changeup are both above average at times with potential for more. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

8-5-14 - Kendall Rogers ‏@KendallRogersPG  - #USC commit, top #MLBDraft prospect RT @DavidRawnsleyPG:  Jacob Gatewood hits balls in BP that the shaggers in OF just turn around and watch.

8-3-13 - Player:  Bryce Carter   Primary Position:  C   Secondary Position(s):  OF  Height/Weight:  6’1/195  Bats/Throws:  L/R  Home Town:  Tulsa, OK  School:  Cascia Hall  Travel Team(s):  Dallas Tigers  Class of:  2014  Committed To:  Stanford   Scouting Notes: - 2013 - Tournament of Stars notes from Don Olsen: - Bryce has a decent frame, present development that should fill out a bit more into the 210-215 pound range.  He gives off a little bit to Ed Herrmann. Little trigger, needs to quite the back foot and rotate, but bat speed and path are ideal for natural loft in swing.  There is some thunder in the bat down the line, especially once he fills out, good present backspin to project.  Arm strength is okay, but fast twitch catch and release, really hops out the set.   Caught two in game POP for 1.97 and 1.98, sound fundamentally.  Solid receiving skills and provides a good target, rounds out to above average defensive game. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/08/03/2014-mlb-draft-profile-bryce-carter/
