LAST GAME:
The first four runs scored by the B-Mets were
unearned as were the last two leading to a 10-8 victory over
Portland in an error-filled extra-inning contest at Hadlock Field
Monday. The B-Mets capitalized on two errors, a walk, a wild
pitch and a balk to score three runs in the first. However, the
Sea Dogs answered quickly with a three-run double from Jon
Still. Portland would score five of the next six runs in the game
to take an 8-4 lead heading into the sixth inning. The starters,
Felix Doubront and Mike Antonini, didn’t make it to the sixth
inning. Doubront threw 3.1 innings allowing four unearned
runs and Antonini allowed a season-high seven earned runs in
4.2 innings. With Justin Hedrick on in relief in the sixth inning,
Carl Loadenthal lifted off with his first home run of the year, a
line shot to right field scoring Ruben Tejada, who had walked
in front of him. This cut the margin to 8-6. In the eighth, Tejada
would walk again with one out and Bryce Cox came in to
try to put out the fire, but after getting the second out Cox
allowed four straight to reach, including RBI singles from Emmanuel
Garcia and Josh Thole to tie the game at eight. Binghamton
won it in extras thanks to two more Portland errors
that prolonged the inning. Nick Evans scored the winning run
on a double steal with Thole, as Evans swiped home.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:
RHP Tobi Stoner will make his
fifth start of the season tonight. Stoner missed the first month
of the season due to a right shoulder strain, but since coming
off the disabled list has been terrific, hurling three quality
starts of his four to date. In his last outing, Stoner gave the BMets
6.1 innings of three-run work May 28 against Connecticut,
but garnered a no-decision in the Defenders 8-7 win. For
the year, he is 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 25.1 innings. Last season,
Stoner made 15 starts with the B-Mets after coming up
June 9 from St. Lucie (High-A). He went 4-6 with a 4.33 ERA in
79 innings. Stoner was the Mets’ 16th-round selection in
2006 out of Davis & Elkins College.
RHP Junichi Tazawa has been the only consistent arm in the
Sea Dogs’ rotation this season going five innings or better in
all but one start. Tazawa picked up his fifth win in his last
outing, going five innings May 28 at New Hampshire allowing
two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. For the year, he
is 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 54.1 innings. Opponents are hitting
just .132 (7-53) against him with runners in scoring position.
Tonight will be his third start against the B-Mets. He has allowed
just three runs to Binghamton in 10.2 innings with a
win this season. The 22-year old righty hails from Yokohama,
Japan where he was found by the Red Sox and signed to a
three-year, $3.3 million contract, including a $1.8 million
signing bonus. He is considered the seventh best prospect in
the Boston organization by Baseball America.
