Erie 3, B-Mets 1

Ike Davis went deep for the second straight game and Eric Niesen struck out a B-Mets season-high nine batters but Binghamton fell 3-1 to Erie Sunday at NYSEG Stadium. Davis’ home run was a solo home run off SeaWolves starter Pat Stanley to right-center field in the fourth inning to give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.

Erie responded in the fifth when they collected three straight hits off Niesen. Danny Worth hit the third single of the inning scoring Santo De Leon from second to make it 1-1. When Emmanuel Garcia bobbled the ball trying to pick it up, Ron Bourquin tried to score all the way from first but was nailed at the plate on a great relay throw by Ruben Tejada and tag by Salvador Paniagua.

Erie (44-38) threatened to take the lead in the seventh against Edgar Ramirez, who was working his second inning. With two outs and Andy Dirks at second base, Cale Iorg hit a soft grounder to Tejada who beat out the throw. Dirks rounded third and tried to score, but was thrown out by Davis on a close play at the plate to keep the game tied.

In the eighth, the SeaWolves did break through off the combination of Ramirez and Roy Merritt. Ramirez allowed a leadoff hit in the frame. Merritt then came in and surrendered singles to Brennan Boesch and Deik Scram to load the bases. De Leon then doubled to score Avila and Boesch to make it 3-1.

Binghamton (30-51) loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but Duda and Shawn Bowman both struck out against Brett Jensen. In the ninth, D.J. Wabick walked and Tejada was hit by a pitch. They both advanced when Jose Coronado sacrificed them ahead with a pinch-hit bunt. Jensen again worked out of the jam though as he struck out Emmanuel Garcia and Jonathan Malo to end the game and pick up his eighth save of the season.

Niesen avoided losing his fifth straight start picking up a no-decision after he went five innings, giving up one run on five hits. Ramirez was pinned with his second loss of the year as he worked 2.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.

Stanley set season-highs in innings, with seven, and strikeouts, with eight, to pick up his third win for Erie.
