Mays and Aaron, Hirokazu Sawamura, Pelfrey Health Update, Ruben Tejada... and Jerry and Jenrry

Mays and Aaron:

The dark side of Willie Mays's personality is one that the mainstream press has all but ignored over the years, though it was flashed in front of their faces in 1973 when Willie clashed with Yogi Berra when Berra was managing the Mets. Mays's disdain for Aaron has likewise been disregarded by the New York media, though it was known and often commented on by writers in Atlanta for many years. Aaron himself has refused to make an issue of it. Two years ago, Willie and Henry appeared as special guests on a Bob Costas HBO special, and Aaron sat and smiled while Mays went on and on about their longtime friendship -- a friendship which never existed. - link

Hirokazu Sawamura:

14 scouts, including those from the Yomiuri Giants, Hiroshima Carp, Nippon Ham Fighters, San Francisco Giants, and New York Mets, were on hand to watch Hirokazu Sawamura pitch on Tuesday. It seems about 8,000 fans also packed Jingu Stadium for a chance to watch the next potential first round draft pick pitch. According to the Tohto University Baseball League, that's the most a non-championship game has ever drawn since 1992. Sawamura's final line from the game: 8 IP, 31 BF, 126 NP, 5 H, 3 BB / HBP, 9 SO, 1 ER. He also topped out at 157km/h, breaking his previous mark of 156km/h (97-mph).- link

Pelfrey Health Update:

The Mets are trying to temper concerns about Mike Pelfrey’s shoulder as best they can. But at this point, only a pain-free and effective start Friday will erase doubts about his health. Pelfrey, who has what the team is calling “tightness” in his throwing shoulder, was supposed to throw his regular between-starts bullpen session Tuesday at Great American Ballpark. But that plan was scrapped at the last minute. Pelfrey will instead throw lightly in a scaled back bullpen session here Wednesday. Pitching coach Dan Warthen said it was his decision to scrap the bullpen session. Pelfrey was in the trainer’s room stretching and was cleared by Mets trainers to throw, but Warthen wanted to be more cautious with him - link

Ruben Tejada:

Ruben Tejeda SS (Panama) Mets - With the injury to Jose Reyes this year he had an opportunity to make his major league debut. If he had started like Wilson Ramos (.733) instead of hitting .167 he may have had the opportunity to play more. At some point the Mets will get tired of the inconsistent production from Jose Reyes and give Ruben another opportunity. He can’t hit .229 like he did in 2008 or continue with the .167 stick. His defense is solid but he still has not proved that his bat will be adequate to play the major leagues. So far this year for the Bisons he is only hitting .256 with a .298 OBA.  - nk

Jerry and Jenrry:

Ignore the extra innings mismanagement of Francisco Rodriguez. That’s merely another bullet point on Manuel’s pink slip. Consider the horrendous handling of Jenrry Mejia to date. Manuel has instructed him to focus on his fastball – presumably the pitch that needs the least work for Mejia to become a good starter. If telling the organization’s best pitching prospect to disregard developing his secondary stuff isn’t enough, then how about then using that pitcher in lower leverage situations than just about everyone else in the bullpen? Manuel is actually using Mejia in the perfect developmental situations, yet he’s capping that development by disallowing him to throw his curve and change-up as often as he wants. Meanwhile, Mejia’s service clock continues to tick. - link
