2. B. A. Vollmuth – Southern Miss – sophomore – R/R… 2009: 37-G, .237, 8-HR, 28-RBI, 8-E…

7-23-9: stats thru 7-15 in Cape Cod League: .289, 1-HR, 9-RBI… starting in Cape Cod All-Star game

11-15-9 from www.collegebaseballblog.com: - named one of top 100 college baseball players

4-7-10 from: http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=2253 - SS B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Mississippi): Vollmuth was one of the driving forces behind Southern Mississippi’s improbable CWS drive last spring, and has kept improving from there. He is hitting .400-7-32 this spring and has significantly improved his contact ratios. The 6-4, 200-pound Vollmuth projects to third base at the pro level as he struggles with his consistency at shortstop (13 errors this year, 13 errors in 27 games in the Cape Cod League last summer).

6-12-10 from: - http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/wait-til-next-year-2011-draft-preview - Southern Miss star B.A. Vollmuth (.386/.490/.729), who Keith Law ranked as the ninth-best Cape Cod League prospect a year ago, is definitely a third baseman down the road, but he’s well-equipped. Vollmuth had a 39.6 TTO% this year, developing the patience he needed …

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, B.A. Vollmuth, Southern Miss, 6'4 210, R/R, power potential and ML arm strength, range and foot speed are biggest opportunities, could play the corner or move to RF, vulnerable to good off-speed stuff at collegiate level, would have to adjust even more at ML level, 240 type hitter for me 15-20 HR power.

6-14-10: Named to 3rd Team NCBWA 2010 All-America Team - B.A. Vollmuth - .386, 72-R, 20-HR, 76-RBI

Some off-speed trouble in game action. Plus speed, raw tools to play SS. A bit crude, but potential five-tool talent.

7-3 from: - http://milbprospects.blogspot.com/2010/07/early-version-of-top-50-prospects-for.html - Top 50 - 49 Tyler Greene , SS , Roswell (Ga.) HS

7-11 from: - http://sullydraft.blogspot.com – top ten high school middle fielders - 4. Tyler Greene- Roswell HS

5. Jason Esposito:

4-7-10 from: http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=2253 - 3B Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt): Esposito, an unsigned seventh-round pick in 2008, is too good an athlete and too good a hitter to expect him to be anything but a first-round pick in 2011. He’s hitting .363-7-38 with 14 steals this spring, and is a standout defensively at third base.

6-12-10 from: - http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/wait-til-next-year-2011-draft-preview - The most well-rounded player up the middle is Jason Esposito (.359/.453/.582), who really came into his own in year two under Tim Corbin at Vanderbilt. He’s now patient, with developing gap power and a threat on the bases (career 50-for-59). Maybe a third baseman in the end, but a five-tool one …

6-29 from: - Andy Seiler Mock Draft - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/6/28/1541924/andys-first-2011-top-50#storyjump - 34. Jason Esposito, 3B, Vanderbilt

5-18-10 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/05/18/tcbb-players-of-the-week-may-18th - The College Baseball Blog continues our tradition of naming National Player and Pitcher of the Week. This week we honor Jason Esposito of Vanderbilt as our Player of the Week. Even though Jason Esposito lost out on SEC Player of the Week Honors, he gets our National Player of the Week. Esposito started off the week with a Walk-Off Homerun against Louisville in the Bottom of the 17th inning that by our estimations still has yet to land. Over the weekend, Esposito went 10 for 19, with 9 runs scored, 2 RBI, and drew a total of 7 walks. On Sunday, he drew 5 walks while going 1-1 with a double to extend his on base streak to 15 straight at bats. Esposito’s clutch efforts in helping Vanderbilt go 4-0 on the week helped Vanderbilt clinch their spot in the SEC Tournament.

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Jason Esposito, Vanderbilt, 6'1 195, R/R, may stay at SS in ML, can play anywhere, puts the bat on the ball, runs good and solid arm. Competes.

6-14-10 from: - http://prospectinsider.com/360mock.php - 2011 Mock Draft – 16 Toronto Jason Esposito, SS -- Vanderbilt

7-3 from: - http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/07/03/early-follow-list-for-2011-mlb-draft - from Fanhouse.com MLB Draft guru Frankie Piliere – Phil Evans SS LaCosta Canyon HS (Calif.) - Very complete player, carries himself like a big leaguer. Plus glove at shortstop and outstanding line drive approach at the plate. Good power potential.

7. Austin Slater - SS 3B The Bolles School Jacksonville FL

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Austin Slater, The Bolles School, Jacksonville FL, 6'2 180, R/R, runs well better on the way, 4.25 out of the box, abv av arm strength, from same school that produced future HOF, Chipper Jones. Bat has questions, but strength isn't a question.

6-29 from: - Andy Seiler Mock Draft - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/6/28/1541924/andys-first-2011-top-50#storyjump - 37. Austin Slater, SS, Bolles HS (FL)

7-11 from: - http://sullydraft.blogspot.com – top ten high school middle fielders – 9. Austin Slater- Bolles School

8. Deion Williams:

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Deion Williams, Stone Mountain HS, Redan GA, 6'2 1/2 180, R/R, solid arm strength, smooth, goes either side crossover well enough to stay at SS, range is there, tenacity and fire are biggest talked about items, he does love the game otherwise he would not be out there.

6-15-10 from: - http://www.deepleagues.com/?p=1830 – 2011 Mock Draft - 27. Minnesota Twins Deion Williams SS, Stone Mountain, GA

6-27 from: -http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702&p=2 - Day two at TOS - SS, Deion Williams, 6'3 170 R/R did not take the field in game 2, but showed good actions at 2b and at SS, took grounders at 2b with Drake Roberts in pre-game. Also has some pop in his bat, singles type hitter and better on the way runner. Seems he's grown up instead of out this year, he needs to add some strength and may be best to go 4 year route. Redan HS, Georgia.

7-18 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/7/17/1574115/all-questions-answered#comments - Projectable bat for average and power. Average runner with an above-average arm, and I think there’s a good chance he slides to third base in the long run or even the outfield. He’s going to add some strength, so it’s all about projection for him at this point.

9. Troy Channing – St. Mary’s – 2009 .379/20-HR/79-RBI./723 slug/: .463 OBS… 9-E…

11-21-9 from www.collegebaseballblog.com: named the 60th top college player for the upcoming 2009 season

10. Austin Nola - LSU

12-23-9 fr. http://baseballdraftreport.com - SO SS Austin Nola (2011) gained notoriety during LSU’s championship run last season as a damn fine defender with an above-average arm. He showed just barely enough with the bat (.240/.350/.364 as a freshman in the SEC isn’t awful) to make him an interesting all-around prospect to watch going forward, rather than just another all glove, small bat player. Even if he doesn’t progress at the plate, he could still have himself a pro career. As the market for good defense continues to grow, players like Nola will likely see their draft stock get a boost. I also can’t be the only one who likes having a player on the premier baseball university in Louisiana with the last name “Nola,” right? I know LSU is in Baton Rouge and not New Orleans, but it still feels right.

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Austin Nola, 6'1 185, LSU, R/R, 70 arm, 55 range, solid glove, also ave runner and will hit 260 plus and occasional enough power to drive in runs, I like him more than CS-Fullerton MIF, Colon.

11. Darian Ramage

1-21-10 from www.baseballamerica: - From the class of 2011, some of the top players were . . . Darian Ramage, ss, Deer Valley HS, Glendale, Ariz.: Ramage is fast (6.75) and shows smooth fielding actions at shortstop. Exceptionally projectable, the switch-hitting Ramage will need time to develop as a hitter, for he needs to acquire substantially more strength, particularly in his hands and wrists

12. Tyler Grimes – Wichita State

1-28-10 from www.baseballdraftreport.com: - SS Tyler Grimes (2011) has spent the offseason working on a pretty nifty trick. He’s learning how to switch hit. That’s a far more impressive feat that whatever the heck I did between my freshman and sophomore years of college. That reminds me of a funny story…[story edited in order to maintain appearance that, yes, this is a family friendly website]…and that was the summer we learned a valuable lesson about Jon Favreau, organic peaches, nasty sunburns, and the power of love. Anyway, Grimes is coming off a darn fine freshman campaign. College numbers don’t tell the whole story, but a quick comparison between the freshman year numbers of the Wichita State shortstop and the consensus top college shortstops of 2009 and 2010 is interesting. Last season Grimes hit .294/.399/.467. In his freshman year, Grant Green, the top college shortstop off the board in 2009, hit .316/.388/.491. In Christian Colon’s first season, he hit .329/.406/.444. This ignores park factors, competition, and a slew of other important things to consider, but the raw rate stats are all pretty similar. Again, college numbers don’t tell the whole story. Grimes’s tools don’t match up with either Green’s or Colon’s, but he does appear to be a legitimate pro prospect in his own right. Grimes’s plus defense (good hands, great range, plus arm) will get him looks regardless of his development with the bat.

13. Mikal Hill:

6-27 from: -http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702&p=2 - Day two at TOS - SS, Mikal Hill, from Charlotte area, Mallard HS, I've seen countless times, better pop of course from left side of plate, just marginal across the board tools, 4 yr school best bet to follow next 3 plus years.

7-13-10: - MaxPreps Junior All-American Baseball Team - Mikal Hill, Mallard Creek (Charlotte, N.C.), Infield - The Charlotte Observer Player of the Year, batted .566 with 39 RBI, 9 doubles and 7 home runs. He also stole 18 bases and has committed to play at South Carolina.

14. Brandon Loy

3-15-10 from http://pnrscouting.com/rankings_2010_houstoncollegeclassic.html - Top 10 Players (2011 Draft Class) - Brandon Loy, SS, Univ. of Texas - The best defensive infielder on the weekend, Loy showed plus hands and good accuracy from multiple angles at short; as with the rest of the Longhorns, the bat wasn't there for Loy on the whole, though he raked an 8th-inning offering from Wall for a game winning double to the left-center gap on Friday.

15. Taylor Featherston

3-15-10 from http://pnrscouting.com/rankings_2010_houstoncollegeclassic.html - Top 10 Players (2011 Draft Class) - Taylor Featherston, SS, Texas Christian Univ. - Clean actions at short during infields and showed comfort there in-game, despite a couple of hiccups, and solid footwork around the baf; reached base in 7-10 plate appearances and showed some ability to drive the ball with good extension through contact but some length in his swing.

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Taylor Featherstone, TCU, another plugger, solid glove and runner, will hit occasional 4 bagger, known for his defense though and hard play.

16. Taylor Motter

5-3-10 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/05/03/big-south-players-of-the-week-9 - - Coastal Carolina sophomore shortstop Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) has been named the Big South Conference’s Choice Hotels Player of the Week. Motter batted .462 (6-13) with eight RBI in four games last week for the Chanticleers. He had a hit in each game, starting with two hits in the 6-3 loss at No. 1 Virginia last Tuesday. He had a run-scoring triple in the game, and followed with three RBI, a double, walk and run scored in the Big South series opener against UNC Asheville. Motter went 2-4 with an RBI in Saturday’s win over the Bulldogs and ended the week going 1-3 with a double and three runs batted in on Sunday. He also played error-free defense at his shortstop position, handling 16 chances cleanly. For the week, Motter slugged .769 and posted a .467 on-base percentage.

17. Adam Smith:

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Adam Smith, Texas A&M, 6'3 200, R/R solid arm, ok range and hands, may end up moving from SS, makes enough contact to get to ML, 250 type hitter, 10 HR type.

18. Joe Sclafani:

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Joe Sclafani, Dartmouth, 6'0 185, R/R, solid arm, adequate range and glove, puts the bat on the ball and shows occasional gap power.

19. Brad Miller:

6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Brad Miller, Clemson, 6'0 180, solid arm strength, range to left good, to right just ok, may have to move to 2b, but 2b has to come from somewhere. Runs ave, better on the way. Father, former UN Iowa alum. Good bloodlines and competitor!!

20. Nolan Fontana:

6-22-10 from: - http://projectprospect.com/article/2010/06/19/college-world-series-scouting-preview - Shortstop Nolan Fontana is a likely first round pick in 2012, making him one of the last before the world ends. Fontana has already been invited to play for Team USA, one of only four freshman granted that honor. A very smooth defender with solid range and a strong arm, he also has an excellent eye at the plate -- walked nearly twice as often (49) as he struck out (28).

7-9 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/07/08/usa-baseball-national-team-trials-game-3-recap - Blue jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated the Red squad 6-1 Thursday night in Game 3 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials at the National Training Complex (NTC). Nolan Fontana (Florida) finally put the Red on the board with a RBI single in the fifth to cut Blue’s lead to three, 4-1.

21. Javier Baez:

7-3 from: - http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/07/03/early-follow-list-for-2011-mlb-draft - from Fanhouse.com MLB Draft guru Frankie Piliere – Javier Baez SS Arlington Country Day HS (Fla.) - Loud bat, big power to the middle of the field. Plus speed and good arm strength. Has the tools to stick at shortstop, but the bat stands out.

22. Chris McFarland:

7-3 from: - http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/07/03/early-follow-list-for-2011-mlb-draft - from Fanhouse.com MLB Draft guru Frankie Piliere – Chris McFarland SS Lufkin HS (Texas) - Shows outstanding in-game feel w/ the bat. I THINK NICK DELGUIDICE OF FAU CAN MAKE YOUR TOP 26 LIST GREAT SHORT STOP

Unknown said...

I really want to know how you rank these kids.

Baez at #21 has played straight up against # 8 Slater. Conclusion: Baez at bat has way faster hands and power than Slater. On the infield you are comparing Baez a SS and Slater a 3b talent. Baez has SS hands Slater not the same.

In conclusion is the list based off reading the internet or what!

Hey Burt:

First of all, it is quite early in the process so I wouldn't worry about anybody's ranking of 2011 draft players right now.

My ranking is only based on the amount of mock drafts that are out, and where each players is ranked on them. It is far from sicentific and isn't based on any opinion of my own

I started doing this three years ago and it's strange how close to accurate it winds up at the end of the drafting process.

I really just do it to help get the kids some exposure. I hope you appreciate it.

I update the ranking around the
15th of each month.

Right now, I have 7 drafts on my excel sheet, one of which is an update from a past one. Baez is only picked on one, at the 35th position (out of 71 picked) of the draft.

Slater is picked on two of them, one at 37th (out of 51) and the other at 54th (out of 71).
