West Virginia 8 Savannah 4

from press release:

The West Virginia Power edged the Savannah Sand Gnats 8-4 on Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power scored four early runs and overcame a short start by Kyle McPherson to win their third straight game.

Savannah starter Taylor Whitenton walked the first three batters he faced, and was forced to pitch with two men on base after. With West Virginia in good scoring position, Ramon Cabrera singled in Jarek Cunningham, Rogelio Noris drove in a run with a base hit, and Jesus Brito doubled in two more runs to give the Power an early 4-0 lead.

The Sand Gnats were able to halve the score over the next two innings, scoring one run each in the second and third. Cesar Puello stole two bases, creating one of the runs for Savannah. Runs for West Virginia from Jose Hernandez and Cabrera ended the third and secured the lead, bringing the score to 6-2.

Each team added a pair of runs late in the game to close the scoring.

West Virginia starting pitcher Kyle McPherson lasted just two innings and was relieved by southpaw Mike Williams (2-2), who pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits to gain the victory for Power. McPherson’s two inning effort marked his second shortest start of the season. Ryan Kelly pitched the final three innings and notched his third save while striking out four. Whitenton was charged with the loss (5-5) for Savannah. Noris paced the Power with three runs batted in and Brito added a pair. Jefry Marte drove in half of the Sand Gnats’ runs.

West Virginia’s victory was their third in a row, matching their season high. The Power also won three straight in mid-May and had a three game streak earlier this month, but have not won four consecutive games at any point during the 2010 season

West Virginia and Savannah play game three of this series at 7:05 pm on Thursday at Appalachian Power Park.
