7/22/10

STOCK UP: - Chris Hilliard, Peter Birdwell, and Luiz Hernandez

Chris Hilliard:

7-21-10: - Hilliard continues to become this year’s version of the Cyclones’ Brandon Moore, by going 5-0 last night against Lowell. Nightly stats were: 6.1-IP, 1-ER, 2-K, 0-BB, 10-fly balls… he was flawless in the first five innings and now stats out for the year at: 5-0, 3.86, 1.26, .214-BABIP, 3.48-FIP. I don’t expect the Mets to rush him this season. He needs to cut down on the WHIP numbers and pitch into the eight inning, but it’s obvious he’s one of the brightest of bright spots on the Cyclones team this year.

Old stuff on Chris:

Hilliard was a unanimous choice as the first team all-Region 23 starting left-handed pitcher after posting an 11-2 record with six complete games and a 4.41 earned run average for the nationally-ranked Itawamba C.C. Indians.

Hilliard was a 38th round draft pick by the Mets in 2008. He signed, and was assigned to the GCL mets, where he went 1-0, 2.87, 1.28, in ten relief appearances. This included 17 strikeouts in 15.2-IP, and only two walks.

From http://goresports.wordpress.com/ : - Itawamba Community College’s Chris Hilliard was drafted late this (Friday) afternoon by the New York Mets in the 38th round in day two of the annual Major League Baseball Draft. The former North Pontotoc High School star was a unanimous choice as the first team all-Region 23 starting left-handed pitcher after posting an 11-2 record with six complete games and a 4.41 earned run average for the nationally-ranked Indians. “I really wasn’t that surprised with the Mets picking me,” said Hilliard, whose 11 wins led the MACJC (15 schools). “They really showed me the most attention of any of the teams.” Hilliard added that he had an extended conversation with a New York Mets scout after his impressive win over Pearl River CC at the regional in Poplarville when the Ecru native went eight plus innings, struck out a season-high 13 batters, gave up just three runs, two were earned, on five hits in a 6-3 victory against the host Wildcats. ICC head coach Rick Collier knew his stellar southpaw would get the call today. “Chris is too good of a pitcher not to be picked in the draft,” said Collier, who often said this year that he had wished Hilliard would have gone straight to his program from high school instead of pitching in less than 10 innings during his freshman season at Meridian Community College. “He throws three different pitches for strikes and that’s a key to Chris’ success.”

Hilliard pitched relief for the GCL Mets in 2008, going 1-0, 2.87, 1.28 in 10 appearances. This included 17 Ks in 15.2 IP.

In 2009, he went 3-3, 2.83, for Kingsport, in 11 games, four of which he started. His strikeouts were down from his rookie year (27 in 41.1-IP) but his ERA remained under 3.00.

1-1-10: Forecast: Hilliard turns 22 in October, and there’s a good chance he will bypass Brooklyn and go straight to Savannah. St. Lucie seems to be stocked in 2010 relievers, so I don’t think he’ll jump that high. But, he did start three games this year, so we’re not sure just what his role will be in 2010.

7-11-10: - Chris pitched another good on efor the Clones... 6.0-IP, 3-ER, 4-K, 1-BB. His yearly stats now stand at: 4-0, 3.72, 1.20, 29.0-IP, 20-K, 5-BB, 15.6%-K/PA, .313-BABIP, 3.26-FIP. Hilliard had a quickie appearance in Savannah but he was destined to pitch this year for Brooklyn. Opinion: I've been high on Hilliard since the day he signed and I expect him to start next season in St. Lucie. Hopefully, I'll get another look at him in Savannah before the season ends.

Peter Birdwell:

7-20-10: - Birdwell finally gave up his first earned run last night for Kingsport. His night stats were: 2.0-IP, 2-H, 1-ER, 3-K, 2-BB and he now comes in for the year at: 6-G, 0-0, 0.96, 1.39… check out that high WHIP… well, that’s the Nolan Ryan-like problem with this fireballer… he’s got 9-K in 9.1-IP, but also 8-BB. .211-BABP and 6.32-FIP. We’ll keep an eye on this rough edge.

Old stuff on Birdwell:

Birdwell was drafted in the 25th round of the 2010 draft by the Mets.

From: -  http://www.vanguard.edu/Athletics/MensB ... fault.aspx  - The athlete: Peter joins the Pride as a senior transfer from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington…played one season for Coach Dan Ramsay at Whitworth…had 39 strikeouts in 43 innings of work…before playing for WU, attended Riverside City College, where he played for Head Coach Dennis Rogers…was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 41st round of the 2008 MLB draft…has played baseball for 18 years…right-handed pitcher who has loads of potential…big, strong and possesses a power hammer…will compete for the closer position for VUSC…should be an impact newcomer for the Blue and Gold in 2010. Coach Grajeda’s Comments: Pete is a guy that has a huge ceiling and I think his new surroundings will revitalize him. I know his character and drive and look for a break-out season from him. He will challenge as the team’s closer.

2010: 19-G 35-IP 44-H 28-R 25-ER 9-BB 27-SO 3-W 2-L 4-SV 6.43-ERA 5-WP 12-HB

Luis Hernandez:

7-19 10: - Hernandez continues to impress at the AAA level. On Monday, he went 3-5, including a double, and raised his AAA batting average to .361 (72-AB). Add to that the 225-AB, .298 job he did for the B-Mets and his year looks like this: .308/.348/.445/.793, in 297-AB, 20-doubles. Hernandez is only 26-years old and does give the Mets a decent emergency substitution in case Jose Reyes goes down again.

Old stuff on Luis:

Hernandez was signed by the Atlanta Braves, in 2000, as an international undrafted free agent.

He played five years in the Braves organization, rising to AAA-Richmond in 2006 (.192 in 73-AB). He was drafted in the Rule V draft by the Baltimore Orioles, where he played two years that included two trips to the majors.

Next stop was the Kansas City Royals in 2009, including 73 at bats with the parent club (.205).

Hernandez’ 3 season MLB stats: .244//284/.276/.560.

His 8 year minor stats are: .249/.297/.320//.617.

2-4-10: signed a one-year minor league contract with the Mets for $400,000.
