George Springer:
8-5 from: - link - George Springer (Connecticut) hit a grand slam as USA defeated host team Japan 4-2 in semi-final action at the V FISU World University Baseball Championships inside Yokohama Stadium Thursday night. With the win, USA (16-2) will make its fourth-straight appearance in the FISU gold medal game when they square off against Cuba on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 5 a.m. (EST). Trailing 1-0 in the bottom half of the first, Springer put USA up for good, 4-1, with his second home run of the summer. Nolan Fontana (Florida) drew a one-out walk, Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina) singled to left and Ryan Wright (Louisville) loaded the bases when he was plunked by a Saitoh pitch setting up Springer’s monster shot to left field that went 10 rows deep.
Eric Johnson:
7-26 from: - link - Here are some names of draft eligibles for 2011 who have not been mentioned much and are definitely on the radar for 2011 MLB scouting depts. – First Base - Eric Johnson, UC-Davis, 6'5 210, good hitter but hasn't shown the power potential that we know is there, does put the barrel on the ball and can field position.
Logan Verrett:
7-30-10 from: - link - • Logan Verrett, RHP, Baylor -- Verrett has gotten rave reviews from scouts thus far on the Cape but it was a struggle for him on Wednesday night. He struggled with his command and topped out at just 91 mph with his fastball. His arm works well and he has an athletic frame so I believe there's a lot more there than he showed on this night. He also mixed in a changeup at 77-79 but mostly was forced to use his fastball as he consistently worked from behind in the count. Although he showed good two-seam life on the fastball he was consistently missing in the middle of the plate.
Ryan Wright:
8-3 from: - link - Team USA scored a combined 10 runs in the third and fourth innings and cruised to an 11-0, seven inning quarterfinal win over China Tuesday afternoon at the V FISU World University Championships inside Yokohama Stadium. With the win, USA (15-2) advances to the semi-finals and will play the winner of Chinese Taipei/Japan on Thursday with a scheduled start time yet to be determined. Ryan Wright (Louisville) put USA up 1-0 when he reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Drew Maggi (Arizona State) in the first frame. Wright, who owns a five-game hit streak, extended his team lead with his fourth multi-RBI contest
Barret Loux:
8-3-10: - link - According to Jeff Passan over at Yahoo! Sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to pull their offer to the sixth overall selection in the 2010 MLB Draft, Barret Loux. The junior lefty from Texas A&M failed a physical in July, preventing the Diamondbacks from signing him. Arizona will now accept the seventh overall pick in 2011 in exchange for not signing Loux, a condition of the MLB draft compensation rule.
