Cutnpaste: - Beltran, Delgado, Jose... and Mathematically Eliminated
Carlos Beltran:
link - The real killer, at this moment, comes with Beltran. He has one year at $18.5 million left in 2011. The Mets badly needed him to play well over the last portion of this season. They never would have been able to trade the whole contract without taking a contract back and/or eating some dollars. But any money saved and/or prospects returned would have provided a favorable outcome. In Angel Pagan, the Mets have a superior defender with offensive upside ready to take over at reasonable dollars. Plus, Beltran clearly does not want to be a Met any more. He came because the Mets offered the most money, but the relationship completely dissolved last offseason with the public fight over his knee surgery. So I am reasonably certain that Beltran would have waived his no-trade rights to get away from the Mets.
Carlos Delgado:
link -Carlos Delgado suffered a potential setback in his attempt to return to the major leagues for the first time since May 2009. Delgado said that his lower left back has felt sore for the last few days, and that it stiffened on him after he struck out in the second inning of Triple-A Pawtucket’s 3-1 win against Buffalo yesterday. He was replaced by Lars Anderson in the fourth. “My left side on the lower back area was a little stiff, so it was kind of like bothering me enough (that) I just came out of there and got a little treatment,” said the first baseman, who is 3-for-13 with two RBI in five games with the PawSox. “It bothered me a little bit on the swing. It’s been a little sore the last couple of days, and we didn’t really think too much of it. It got to the point where it got pretty tight, and I couldn’t move around as well as I wanted to.” Pawtucket manager Torey Lovullo said Delgado is day-to-day.
Jose Reyes:
link - Obviously the philosophy can change, but the Mets plan to pick up Jose Reyes’ club option this winter and explore signing him to another long-term deal, a person familiar with the team’s thinking told The Post yesterday. Reyes ideally wants to stay in New York long-term, but he said yesterday that next year is not even on his mind yet and a long-term contract is too far away to consider. “We need to wait and see,” he said.
Mathematically Eliminated:
link - After losing their fifth straight game Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates were mathematically eliminated from Major League Baseball, having fallen to a 36-69 record that officially disqualified the team from ever playing the sport again. "Eventually it comes to a point where there just aren't enough future games to turn things around for a baseball team," manager John Russell said following a 4-0 loss to the Reds that ended the Pirates franchise. "I had high hopes that we would go deeper into our regular seasons, but truthfully, we've been playing so lousy for the last 18 years that even if we got to our 106th game we wouldn't have been able to contend." In response to the Pirates' getting knocked out of professional baseball forever, Pittsburgh fans said that they were frankly relieved.
