Ten Things I'm Thinking About The Mets

1. I would rather have Fareed Zakaria be my closer than to ever see Angel Pagan bunt again, with Jose Reyes on first base, and no outs.

2. I think having Jenrry Mejia pitch the pen in Queens this year actually has helped him develop as a starter. He had little control before this and his whole handle was his velocity on one pitch. Now, he seems to be concentrating more, inning by inning, and there is definitely some additional movement on his fastball.

3. By my count, 17 of today’s roster is the future of the 2011 team. You have five infielders (Davis, Tejada, Reyes, Wright, Thole), four outfielders, (Pagan, Beltran, Martinez, Bay), four starters (Santana, Dickey, Pelfrey, Niese), and four relievers (K-Rod, Takahashi, Acosta, Parnell). Add to that Mejia and Murphy, and you have six openings… a catcher… two utility players… and three more relief pitchers. You be the judge whether this is enough talent to win a pennant.

4. I think Mets fans have seen a tremendous amount of prospects promoted in the past few years, but that just might be done until 2013. There’s very little ready after a Mejia promotion, and the only other kids I can see getting a chance in Queens next season would be Dillon Gee in the pen and Kirk Nieuwenhuis as a utlility outfielder.

5. The Mets high-level rotational pitchers have almost uniformly not panned out. Dylan Owens and Eric Niesen are already in the pen. Jeuryrs Familia, Robert Carson, and Brad Holt have all taken a step back. Kyle Allen, Chris Schwinden, and Eric Beaulac have all struggled at new levels. Only projectable MLB SP currently in system is Mejia.

6. You’re going to start hearing the name Jordany Valdespin more often. Anyone that has scouted him says he’s the highest ceiling they have seen from a Mets infielder since  Reyes. The problem is you will also hear more about him because he’s a royal pain in the ass. He already has been suspended by the manager last year in Savannah, followed by Fonzie suspending him at St. Lucie. Valdespin got promoted to Binghamton yesterday, which may be a combination of recognized talent and a desire to not have him around anymore. Potentially could make Lastings Milledge look like a choir boy.

7. The Mets do not have one single developed relief pitcher in their system. Sure, there are some kids at the lower levels that are impressing us, but we’ve fell for the before. Pitchers like Carlos Muniz, Eddie Kunz, and Roy Merritt have all digressed. Closest think to a major league pitcher would be either Jose De La Torre, or Edgar Ramirez.

8. So far, the 2010 draft picks are producing a tremendous amount more than the motley 2009 crew. One exception to this would be OF Darrell Ceciliani, who’s easily been the best player this year in the NY-Penn League. There’s little pop here, but he’s only 20-years old and could be one of those community college steals that come around once in awhile.

9. The Mets will begin to move some of their secondary level prospects to other positions in winter ball this year. Don’t be surprised if Wilmer Flores doesn’t start playing in the outfield while Reese Havens plays exclusively at second. Most of the Mets brass drools over Havens’ talent, but bristle at his propensity to getting injured. He also heals slower than F-Mart. The Mets have quietly shut him down for the rest of this season.

10. Don’t expect the Mets to go after much in free agency. Any attempt to sign Carl Crawford depends a lot on what F-Mart does in Queens for the rest of the season.

Some observations & a question:

I think Justin Turner is in the mix there, and might even turn Tejeda into MINF backup (a la Cora).

…Beltran too. I can see him traded if Crawford is a real possibility.

Q: What exactly does Valdespin do to make him a Royal PITA? Uncoachable? Lackadaisical? Off-the field wild-man (A.Burgos)?

Re: Valdy: the answer to your three questions on him is... yes

the violation in Savannah is unprintable

the violation in Savannah is lack of respect for the rules

he also is a show boat and likes to field routine ground balls with a Michael Jackson flair... some of his antics have caused erros and runs to score...

just a pain in the ass... but VERY talented

I'm sorry... the second reference to a violation was not a repeat of Savannah... that was the St. Lucie incident where he was pulled after the first inning of a game

Find him a Shrink--seriously.

How about Pedro Feliciano? Is he a free agent after this season? If so, why not trade him now?

Great Post Mack. Some comments and questions:

In regards to Carl Crawford, I would much rather have the Mets try and go after Cliff Lee(I know its a long shot) or another Starting Pitcher. Carl Crawford is a great player but the Mets do have a LF and guys like Pagan, reyes (table setters like carl)

Do you think the Mets can count on Josh Thole as their everyday catcher? I like his stats but I am not aware of his catching skills.

How many games finished does KROD have already? That option of $17 million is a joke....way too much money....

Pete:

Feliciano has very little trade value, but he will compete for one of the Mets utility positions available in 2011. The Mets were extremely happy with his Queens bats, but the Mets define "utility" players as someone that can play both the infield and outfield (like Tatis did and Murphy will).

Thank you...

1. I tend to write about things I hear that the Mets ARE going to do, rather than what I think they should do. Lee never told his agent that the Mets was one of the teams he wanted to go to. Crawford is definitely a target of Omar & Company.

2. Re: Thole... I know this kid very well and I'm very pruod of what he is accomplishing, but, this is probably the best he will ever be. Is it enough? Well, according to the catchers that will be available through free agency in the off-season, yes, he is the Mets best option with, hopefully Barajas or Mike Nickeas as his backup (could be Michael Barrett also).

3. Do not worry about K-Rod's option year. He will be the closer in 2011 that will be his last year as a Mets, along with Perez, Castillo, and Beltron.

Point #7.

Didn't Bobby Parnell get drafted and developed in the Mets system?

Re: "Robert" (he hates being called Bobby)... yes he did... but... when I say "in the system", I'm always referring to current minor leaguers.

With all that said, why isn't Pat Misch being given a shot to see if he can succeed at a major league level? He's not a 2- or a 3, but could he be a 4- or a 5? Possibly. He's pitched well in AAA; I can't understand why he hasn't gotten the call. I'd rather see Misch on the mound this weekend than see Takahashi flip back and forth between the rotation and bullpen again...

Mack Ade said...

not only that Nuke...

Misch had a spring training ERA of... 0.00.

I have no idea why he hasn't got a shot... he seems to have become the new Nelson Figueroa.

Hello.... Lucas Duda!

Let's think back a couple years folks, when Carlos Beltran was probably the best player in baseball for the last few months of the season, including the playoff run for the Houston Astros! What did it get him, a phat amount of money in his contract year! Now I don't know about any of you, but I got a strange feeling Beltran will actually stay healthy next year, and have the best year as a Met! That being said.....if he is producing anywhere near the way he was a few years ago, I say trade him near the trade deadline, and get as much as possible for him!

Mack Ade said...

Beltran's trade vaule will be determined based on what he does THIS season, not next year; however, there is a good chance that he could be part of a trading deadline deal this time next year if he gets out of the gate well.

yep, the most feasible scenario has Beltran being traded in mid season 2011... it's not likely to happen before that, given the money he's due for next season.
