I hope Mets fans are
watching what R.A. Dickey is doing in the past
thirty days. This just doesn’t happen around Flushing much over the past 50
years. Naturally, the Mets luck is that Dickey is in the last year of his
contract, but I think both parties will work this out before the season ends.
R.A. loves being a Met leader and frankly, this might be the dominant leader in
the clubhouse.
The David Wright barehanded error was just that, an error,
and I’m sure that David thought he got a break when it was ruled a hit. How do
you think he left after that being the only hit in the first eight innings?
Wright confused the hell out of the situation even more by creating a throwing
error in the 9th. It would take a request by Dickey himself to review
this play and no one wants a no-hitter that way, especially one where a run was
scored.
We blog pundits spend
so much time trying to figure out the future of this team and it’s so much
easier when a starter steps up like R.A. has. Assuming a deal I consummated,
you go into the off-season with a dominant SP1-3 (Johan Santana, Dickey, Jon
Niese) and you have choices (Chris Young, Dillon Gee, Matt
Harvey, Jeurys Familia, Jenrry Mejia) to fill those two other slots.
2014 even gets more
exciting. Zack Wheeler slots directly into the slot created with the departure
of Santana. And then, in 2015, along comes Michael Fulmer. We’re not even
giving press to around ten other starters that are impressing people in the
system. Yeah, R.A. for 2-3 more years will surely make all this math work even
better.

Even with a ton of pitching in the system, I have to think that the Mets will do (and should) everything they can to keep R.A. Dickey for the long term. He is great for this organization and a ton of fun to watch. And, on top of all of that, he is one of the best pitchers in baseball without a doubt.
FYI, the Mets have a 5 million club option for next year.
the 5milption is well know, but send the wrong sign
sit down and work out a deal through 2014 witha team option for 2015. Do it now.
Tear up the option. 3/$30M?
One of the verrryyy interesting negotiations for the Mets in coming years will be Dickey. If he were a young fireballer putting up numbers like this and dominating start after start, he would be looking at a HUGE contract. However, given his age and the nature of the knuckleball, he won't get nearly as much as he's earned.
That being said, I hope the Mets pony up and respect both Dickey and what he's done with a generous contract. I would be more than fine giving Dickey 3/30 and I hope the Mets would be too.
Stephen, to your point I think the mets will actually get him for less than that and with the fourth year option based on his age and being a knuckleballer. my guess is tear up the$5m option and give him a raise and offer him 3yr/$24m. obviously his knuckleball is ridiculous right now but the nature of the knuckle ball is up and down so it's tough to invest long time at his age. although if he keeps this up we might be in for a really big investment on him. you have to expect that this will tell ross in the second half a bit, but I hope im wrong.
baseball is secondary to him and he really loves being a Met
both these things will be in the Mets favor
