Thursday night in Philadelphia, Chris Young broke out of his
funk and Zach Wheeler was throwing pellets as the Mets beat the Phillies 4-1.
Behind Wheeler the Mets chipped away at Philly starter David Buchanan. In the 2
nd
Lucas Duda defied the shift against him and bunted down the thirdbase line for
a hit. Chris Young and Wilmer Flores then singled to load the bases and Duda
came home with the first run when Travis d’Arnaud hit into a double play. In
the 4
th after Curtis Granderson walked, Young clubbed a 2 run homer
(4) to make it 3-0 Mets. In 5
th
the Mets had a chance to break the game open against Buchanan. They loaded the
bases with 1 out. Granderson walked to
make it 4-0, but Duda struck out swinging and Young flew out to end the
threat. In the 7
th Wheeler
was humming along and retired 13 straight, but former Met Marlon Byrd snapped
that streak with one out with an homer to right field to
make it 4-1. Wheeler went 6 1/3 allowing 4 hits, the one run (earned) he walked
none and struck out 9. He picks up the win improving to 2-5. Scott Rice and Vic
Black each retired a Phillie to end the 7
th. Black pitched a
scoreless 8
th as well. Black went 1 1/3 innings striking out 3 of 4.
Jenrry Mejia threw the 9
th
and recorded his 5
th save striking out the side as the Mets pitchers strike out 15 on the night. With the win the Mets stand at 25-28 and
now 12-11 on the road. Friday night is game two of this five games series,
Rafael Montero (0-2 4.96) goes for the Mets, A.J. Burnett (3-4 3.51) goes for the Phils.

The hitting is still a big question mark, but the pitching is far better than a few weeks ago, and first place not that far off. We live in interesting times.
