WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW senior lefthanded pitcher Kelly Secrest was selected in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Friday.

Secrest, who was picked with the 295th overall pick, becomes the 36th Seahawk during Head Coach Mark Scalf’s tenure to be drafted.

As a senior, Secrest set a school and Colonial Athletic Association career record with 114 appearances over his four years with the program. Secrest recorded a team-leading eight saves this season to move into second on UNCW’s all-time list with 17 career saves. The hard-throwing lefthander also recorded a 5-2 record and posted a 1.73 earned run average. Opponents hit a meager .218 and managed just two extra base hits.

Secrest is the first Seahawk to be selected by the Mets since Bradley Holt was a first round supplemental pick of the organization in 2008. Jason Roach, another pitcher for the Seahawks, was taken by the Mets with the 20th round of the 1997 draft and made his MLB debut for the organization during the 2003 season.
