If I were drafting for the Mets here is my list for the first pick. I know some are sure to be off the board but you have to be prepared incase the unexpected happens. 1. Kolek 2. Aiken 3. Rodon 4. Gordan 5. Newcomb 6. Beede 7. Jackson 8. Hoffman 9. Toussaint 10.Schwarber.

Mack Ade said...

I wish... but I just can't see the Mets having the nuts to pick Hoffman. I wish they would, but I don't think they will.

One question
The Pirates made a trade for the 39th pick. It came from the Marlins. The only way you can trade for a draft pick is if it is a competitive balance pick. I know it is extremely unlikely but is it possible for the Mets to get this pick as the PTBNL in the Davis trade?

Mack Ade said...

Richard, I really am not sure. I think Stephen can answer that and, hopefully, when he gets home, he'll read this and answer it.

My list above is not the order of ho I think will go in that position. The list is my preference to who the Mets draft with the number 10.
As far as Hoffman I'm starting to back off based on what I'm hearing he is demanding. I would not pay him slot. There are other payers like Newcomb and Beede I would rather pay slot to. From what I'm hearing is that the Mets would have to pay Hoffman 1.5 million above slot. That would cripple them for the rest of the draft. I don't know if I believe the reports because I can't see anyone paying Hoffman 4 million.

Mack Ade said...

I happen to like Pentacost over Schwarber and I love a catcher pick.. either one of thes two would help the Mets to dominate a position and get on the trade phones

Anonymous said...

Besides Meadow and McGuire are there any other players from the Pirates 2013 daft that you would take over this years 39th pick?

Mack Ade said...

Only one... OF JaCoby Jones, who just might be the guy. Remember, Polanco is on the way to Pittsburgh and their outfield is done for the rest of the decade

Ernest Dove said...

I just want mets to go college. ....sandy and co. Have enough high school picks hovering around A ball clubs still

Mack Ade said...

Ernest - Let me ask you a question...

College pitcher or college bat?

Anonymous said...

Mack, how many rounds will they be completing tonight?

Craig Brown said...

If they go college pitcher they almost cant screw this up...

But I have a wierd feeling.....

Mack Ade said...

Tonight will feature the top 74 picks

I will break out the top 20-30 players still left on the board (for the Mets pick tomorrow at 84) in the Morning Report

Anonymous said...

2 rounds

Craig Brown said...

Baseball America had them taking Forest Wall in their final mock...I would be speechless

Ernest Dove said...

Based on all the great research and info. Your site has produced in regards to the draft and all its top prospects, I say take one of the power arms. ...
.

Mack Ade said...

If the Mets pick Forrest Wall at #10, I'm going to become a nun.

Mack Ade said...

Ernest -

Keep picking arms until you get it right

Anonymous said...

LHP college please

Stephen -

Welcome -

feel free to go into the post and add stuff there as well... I will be adding the names of each person picked on that page next to the team already listed...

Craig Brown said...

PREDICTION TIME...

Guy that falls further than we thought....Jeff Hoffman

Guy that goes higher than we thought.....Kodi Meideros

Michi L. said...

And Alex Jackson falls to us ; )

Stephen Guilbert said...

I agree, Craig. I could also see Chavis and Gatewood going much higher.

Craig Brown said...

Welcome Stephen

What are youre thoughts on BA mocking the Mets to take Forrest Wall?

Stephen Guilbert said...

Expected and I'm glad Aiken went #1. Great kid, great pick. He'll be very very good.

Ernest Dove said...

Mack

Absolutely. Let the front office figure out what to do with the possible excess of takent............
Besides, think about all of the fan base who is willing to give up top prospects to the mariners and dbacks for a SS. Its because of those teams and their perceived depth at the position which allows them to snatch up a possible mid to top rotation guy, all for a player who conceivably can't even crack their own 25 man roster.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Hey Craig, where are you seeing that? I haven't seen that yet.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Kolek surprises me a bit. One of the best fastballs in the draft and real nice off-speed stuff too.

Craig Brown said...

Stephen,

Baseball America mock draft 5.0 had them taking Wall

Anonymous said...

No surprise to me. Marlins had success with drafting Fernandez. Both those Guys healthy gives the Marlins one of the best 1-2 in baseball 5 years down the road.

Mack Ade said...

My guess is Rodon is next at #3... don't want to lose your chance at an arm like that

Stephen Guilbert said...

Will be shocked if it's not Rodon here.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Yep. Nailed it. No way the White Sox pass on him there as they really wanted pitching, liked Hoffman, and was not going to take anyone else there once Miami went with Kolek.

Michi L. said...

Now its getting interesting

Anonymous said...

Cubs
Jackson, Gordon, or a pitcher like Nola?

Stephen Guilbert said...

Yea, the Cubs are the wildcard here. I still don't think they can pass on Gordon or Jackson but they might have some overslot thing brewing. If they don't, it should be Jackson. If they do, look for Schwarber, Conforto, or Pentecost.

Michi L. said...

Hopefully some unexpected picks

Mack Ade said...

or the Cubs could surprise with Conforto

Anonymous said...

Mack
I hope so. Remove him as a possibility for the Mets.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Schwarber...very interesting.

Craig Brown said...

What they need is college pitcher...but they usually go best player available.

I say Alex Jackson

Stephen Guilbert said...

Twins take SS Nick Gordon

Anonymous said...

Stephen
How are you following the draft? You had that posted a good half minute before they announced it on the MLB Network.

Michi L. said...

Boy phillis probably steel jackson

Stephen Guilbert said...

Richard, I have a source haha

Craig Brown said...

Yeah im watching schwarber scouting reports, and you already have the twins pick posted

Stephen Guilbert said...

Not sure about Gordon...that's a guess but it really should happen. Could be Jackson, but should be Gordon. Will know shortly.

Anonymous said...

Keith Law?

Mack Ade said...

Shocked about Schwarber

Bill Metsiac said...

Why can supp picks be traded, but no others?

Stephen Guilbert said...

Gordon is the right pick there. Absolutely. I was right about Jackson falling. Now i have the Mariners taking Nola, let's see if I'm right. Everyone else has them taking Jackson, but I think they want a pitcher badly. Let's see.

Craig Brown said...

Schwarber pick is good for Mets...

Stephen Guilbert said...

Schwarber's gone, Craig. #4 to the Cubs.

Mack Ade said...

Minny has to be dancing that Gordon was still on the board.

Four of the top five picks were expected to be picked well before 10th... the Mets are one surprise pick away from a 'no brain' success here... unless they hit the ball in the lake

Mack Ade said...

Next pick has to be Jackson

Stephen Guilbert said...

Richard- They actually made that pick.

Anonymous said...

Any pick other than Newcomb is good for the Mets.

Craig Brown said...

Yeah, I know...I just meant that Shwarber going higher than projected pushes one of the top picks back.. Better possibility of getting a guy like Nola now..

Michi L. said...

Even if theres a no brainer avaiable for the Mets, they are picking conforto because they are the mets

Stephen Guilbert said...

Mariners select Alex Jackson, Phillies have confirmed they will take Aaron Nola.

Anonymous said...

Everyone's top 5 are off the board. Only one big surprise. Now it gets interesting.

Stephen Guilbert said...

We will probably have a shot at Hoffman. Unless the Blue Jays pass on someone huge, we could draft him. Now will the Mets have the testicular fortitude to do so?

Mack Ade said...

It was interesting to hear that Jackson was introduced as an outfielder.

Also interesting was Philadelphia 'confirming' they will pick Aaron Nola next... which is fine with me.

That means 7 down and 2 ahead with Beede, Tyrner, Zimmer, Freeland, and Pentacost still on the board

Anonymous said...

I saw Nola pitch and I must have seen him on a bad day because I wasn't impressed. I'm glad he is off the board.

Mack Ade said...

So...7 down... 2 more to go then #10... Hoffman still on the board...

Let me ask you...

What's in your wallet?

Stephen Guilbert said...

I'm thinking:

Rockies- Freeland
Blue Jays- Hoffman
Mets- Newcomb

Anonymous said...

With Hoffman we lack the information. When G.M.s talk to him what is he asking for. I could dal with the injury but not the injury and signability.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Freeland it is.

Anonymous said...

Stephen you have been on the money. I hope you have the next two right.

Mack Ade said...

Okay... I can live with Freeland off the board.

One more to go and both Turner and Zimmer still available.

Are we safe here?

Stephen Guilbert said...

Richard Jones who do you like? Let's say I'm right and Newcomb, Turner, Gatewood, Conforto, Zimmer are still on the board? Who do you take?

Anonymous said...

Mack
Your not high on Newcomb?

Anonymous said...

No doubt Newcomb

Anonymous said...

It's Conforto according to KLaw

Mack Ade said...

Love Newcomb... but I'll wait this one out and comment after.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Not thrilled. Zimmer, Turner, or Newcomb are preferable to me.

Mack Ade said...

Oh my...

Anonymous said...

Another Lucas Duda. We screwed it up.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Nah, he's a better hitter than Duda but there was too much talent here to take Conforto. He'll be good, but others will be better. We are a power-starved team and drafted for need, not the best player available. That's what just happened here.

I don't love the pick, but it's not a terrible one. Conforto can really hit and if his defense isn't good enough in the outfield, make him a first baseman. The power and hit tool play there as well. Honestly that might be where the Mets see him anyway.

Anonymous said...

Baseball America has him the 8th best player in the draft. That is good enough for me. They make their living scouting these guys afterall.

Stephen Guilbert said...

Wow, for the first time in, ever? I LOVE i mean LOVE their pick. Modi Medeiros is absolutely nasty.

Mack Ade said...

I am, like every year since the Mets picked Matt Harvey, am very disappointed at the Mets first pick. I'm not questioning whether or not Conforto has talent (like my thoughts on Nimmo when he was drafted so early). I just simply can't understand how he could be picked above players left on the board like Turner, Zimmer, Beede, and Newcomb.

Craig Brown said...

I'm with you Mack, They basically just drafted a 1B for the second consecutive year...

Stephen Guilbert said...

Signing off for the night. Thank you to everyone for participating. An interesting draft! I think the Mets go with tough signs for high ceiling HS pitchers with the next couple picks. I will chat with you all tomorrow night after work with my thoughts on rounds 3-10.
