Ernest Dove - What's Next For Mets in 2014 (and beyond)?

It was pretty tough for me to make the decision to still post an article, especially after what I just saw (watching only the 8th to the top of the 13th inning).......... but here it goes.

What is the plan, going forward with the Mets, for the rest of 2014?

It has truly become, for this team, and its fans/writers/bloggers, groundhog day.....
(anyone out there catch the irony, capturing scene which depicts man yelling about overspending)

We are all (well, according to attendance records, maybe not all) seeing the same game, being played, over, and over, and over, and over again.

So now what?  We have been waiting a few years for things to come together.  The money was freed up. The top pitching prospects were ready. The fans were ready.  But, so goes the Mets.  Hitters are not hitting. Hitters have a good game, week, or couple of weeks, but then are benched or simply go cold.

Solid pitching leads to limited run support. Timely hitting leads to bullpen failure.  We begin analyzing players ability to make good contact, for outs, and proclaiming it a sign that they are 'turning it around'.
Then, there are the injuries.  Sure, every team has injuries. But I don't care about other teams.  I care about the Mets.  Chris Young hits lights out in spring training. Then immediately goes on DL. Then seemingly has completely forgotten everything about hitting since he came off DL.

Juan Lagares went from decent aaaa level player, to defensive sensation, to .300 hitter, to injury prone. Matt Harvey, despite whatever hopes and dreams everyone may have, probably will not, and and should not, pitch this year.

Rafael Montero, possible future star, possible bullpen arm, possible trade peace, current member once again of the Las Vegas 51s, where he is joined by the proclaimed future catching star Travis d'Arnoud. Also joined by the almighty Thor, who is now off and on and hopefully back off of the disabled list. And, as in years past, the Mets continue to shuffle in 28+ year old journeyman in and out of the lineup and pitching rotations/bullpen.

                                                                 Again, so now what?

Where do the Mets go from here, to finish out the season?  Noah Syndergaard (THOR), even before the injuries, was not exactly lighting the PCL on fire with his mighty right arm (4.47 ERA, 54 1/3 innings and 62 hits allowed). Top hitting prospect Cesar Pueblo, entering Thursday nights game, is hitting .226 with 1 homerun.........1 homerun....... in 53 games for the 51s.

So, unlike the past 2 seasons, where the Mets at least fabricated some form of excitement in the call-ups of Harvey and Wheeler, (and, to some extent, Wilmer Flores), the Mets may now appear a little empty in the cupboard, with little to turn to.

Forget the 90 win foolishness.  True Mets fans weren't falling for that anyway.  I'm now more concerned with what management will be doing, to finish out this year, and if the goal will be to at least still try and win more games then last year.

But, again, where do they go from here?  Carlos Torres (when you try and minus the overuse) Dice K and Bartolo Colon may be currently pitching themselves into a decent trade value level. The only possible hitter trade value on the 25 man roster, also happens to be the only guy that has ACTUALLY hit consistently this season (Murphy). So, does management still risk trading him off, and deal with the fan backlash, even as home attendance is already plummeting?

Beyond Syndergaard, there really doesn't seem to be any exciting pitching available at the higher levels to spark the team, and the city (especially if Montero remains blocked anyway by a healthy Gee, strong outings continuing from deGrom, and the Colon/Dice K combo remaining on the roster).

As for hitting, without Puello hitting, the only guy who seems like the next hottest choice at the moment, also happens to a guy now officially stuck in AA ball (Plawecki), due to the TDA demotion to Vegas.

Usually, in situations like these, certain teams may begin their youth movement, by calling up prospects (like the Astros), or by trading off veterans (Marlins).  However, to me, it almost seems like the Mets are either unwilling (management decision) or unable (injuries) to do EITHER.

So here we are, still in June, still not even halfway through the season. However, it has the feel of Springtime.  Different lineups every night.  Everyone hits, everyone shares starting duties, and everyone pitches (a lot).

I just don't know what is to become of this team.  They have the most losses in 1-2 run games. They have led, and lost the lead, the most times in the MLB this year.  They have solid pitching. Are we supposed to consider that an indication of a team that can win, with more luck, and by having players 'turn it around'?

As you can tell, I have absolutely NO answers for anything.  I have tickets to see them play the Marlins coming up soon, in Miami. After that game, I don't even know how much longer my heart can take watching them this year.

I guess, I will hope for the best.  Besides, (if healthy), we have a stud pitcher possibly getting a summer call up. And we may be able to trade a veteran for another teams top 20 prospect.  We may be able to end up with a protected top ten pick with a poor record, so we can use saved money from bad contract/contracts coming off the books in the offseason to sign a top free agent and not lose a first rounder........................ Groundhog Day..............................................

Ernest,
Good article. I think the main problem with improving before we can grow a goof team (another what - 5 years) is that the FO is scared to take any risks. They will not trade pitching because they're scared of a pitcher going down. They wouldn't trade Wright (and I'm probably his biggest fan) because they were scared of fan backlash. As you said, the only tradeable hitter we've got is Murphy, and if they trade him, we go deep in the cellar. We are floundering,

I can handle losing, IF there is a plan to make the team better. I don't think there is a plan any more, except to keep fielding a team on a Miami-Tampa Bay budget in the largest market in the country. Where is the SNY money going?

I truly believe our only real hope is the next Commisioner. Hopefully, he will do something about the situation this team is in. The Wilpons should have been gone when the Madoff scandal broke. They are terrible at the business of sports. They had an object lesson right across town, in the Bronx. Whatever you think of the Yankees as a team, you've got to admin that the more money they spent on players, the more the team made. You can't run a sports franchise like a real estate business.

The cheapest way to reenergize the fan base would be to eat the $1.75 million due on the remainder of Terry's contract (or simply to relieve him of managerial duties and reassign him) then promote Wally Backman as interim manager from AAA. All of the sudden people will want to watch Mets games again and the addition by subtraction might result in a net positive.

Michael S. said...

Terry has to go and we need to identify and acquire another bat. That would be a great start.

Mack Ade said...

I now agree with Reese.

I find nothing attractive about watching this team anymore. Wheel of Fortune excites me more.

A change of manager, especially to someone as outgoing as Backman, would get a certain amount of the fan base back to see if there was a change in direction how the team is put on the field.

What I worry about is all it's going to prove is that Alderson still directs everything from his sky box.

I have to agree with you and Mack. Hope for this organization is looking to be futile.
They just have their entire thought processes mixed-up.
Their plan has proved to be poor.
They have not shown any evidence the next 5 years will result in any real measurable progress on the major league level.
Alderson and the Wilpons have failed and they have failed Spectacularly.

Unfortunately, the truth is that Backman will not change things. He might provide a bit of momentum for a short period of time but that's it. The organization is broken from up above.
The only reason to want Backman to become the next coach is if you really hate him and wish him to lose his mind.

Bob -

Well... if I was Sandy and wanted the heat off of me for the rest of this year, I would fire TC and name Wally as interim manager (with all the intention of replacing him in 2015).

This would at least give me some time to either come up with a couple of mid-season trades/dumps or find myself a job.

There's a good base of talent in the system but we're talking 2016 at best... here we go again.

As for the blog, it's my job.

I'm concentrating on the draft pick posts for now through the early portion of next week. Past that, I pray for help from my writers.

In your opinion, do you think the various misadventures associated with the way the Wilpons have run this team would justify a new Commissioner taking a McCourt type action and forcing the present ownership to sell?

Ernest Dove said...

.............sigh. ...........attention Mets management: please don't let Terry Collins keep getting in front of microphones and tell everyone lines like 'he's getting there' and 'I took him out early because........' and 'he as to earn the promotion, and we're keeping an eye on his performance'...........
Front office doesn't care performance. ......too many examples to go through. ........
Time to clean house........again.....only this time, a DEEP cleaning.
Trade/DFA colon, dice k, Eveland, ey jr, CY, abreu and Murphy (folks, he's played his way to contract that ownership apparently can't afford).......oh, and throw in Recker and teagarden (thanks for the one hit tea)....
Don't ask me who fo trade for or call up (other then thor Montero centeno and TDA.)
If I'm gonna watch (occasionally) another 70 win team, at least fill it with some form of hope (youth).

I think there will be a 'quiet' investigation/set of meetings.

Did you see the size of those 'crowds' this Brewers series? NYC is the largest media market for MLB. They simply can't allow this kind of money to continue to be lost.

What are the chances for a forced sale?

I say dim.

I can't change how you feel. I have a couple of posts Monday and Tuesday that will address this.

I only hope you keep writing about your frustrations.

It really has gotten bad. What is there for me to be excited about in any given game? All of the exciting players are hurt and likewise the future players upon which our hopes hang are either hurt, underperformed or benched and play once a week. DeGrom and Niese are fun to watch pitch but they come with losses or no decisions every game because of our meek offense. On the rare occasion we have had the lead its fun to see Black, Familia, Mejia late in the game but really we are just grasping at straws at something to be interested in.

I think the Mets are forced to go all in on their young pitching. By the deadline they need to have Syndergaard and Montero up. They need to see what they can get for Neise, Gee, and Colon. If they can get some offense that will help them now and in the future they need to make those trades.
Last year I was o.k. to a point with the losing because I thought they would get a good player from this draft and aside from that player they would be able to add something during the off season to help them turn the corner.
I don't like to judge in hindsight. I was on board with Granderson and he still could contribute. Young I thought was a waste of money when they signed him and he is proving I was correct. I hated the Colon signing and he has been decent, but I still think they should have used that money to add offense.
Last year at this time I was all about building for 2014, 2015, and 2016. Now they have to do something to start winning now. I still don't want them to trade Syndergaard or Wheeler. I want to see what a rotation of Harvey, Syndergaard, and Wheeler can do. That has the potential of being very exciting.

'Crowds' - it looked like a Claude Rains convention!
(For those of you who don't get the reference, Claude Rains played the Invisible Man in the 1933 )classic film.

I did enjoy the limited commercial broadcast on Thursday. Glad mlb.tv was ready and didn't screw up on the commercial breaks like they have many times before.

Hey Mack

I'm actually REALLY looking forward to being part of the 7line army at Marlins Park in the next week or so.....but after that game (I'll write about my 7line experience) it might be hard.....

Mack Ade said...

Dallas - The only thing fans can do is NOT go to the game, and NOT spend any money on promotional items, I don't expect them to cancel subscriptions to SNY but that's another step in the right direction. The more you hurt this team, and the league, in the pocket, the quicker something someday will happen.

Alderson is too proud of a man to keep representing this family... he will leave soon.

STAY AWAY.... (but keep reading Mack's Mets, of course)

I was in broadcast sales for 32 years...

You honestly think a 'limited commercial' special isn't also tied to the fact that their sales staff can't sell shit right now?

They won't trade Niese until Matz is ready. Gee is probably our only chance to get a decent ML player, except for Murph, and I'm hoping they hold off on trading him until after the season. No way the Won'tpons will pay for him next year. Colon - who's going to want to take on his contract. That 2-year contract on a 40-year old pitcher was not designed for a trade.

I hope I'm wrong about the FO keeping Murph - you can't help but love the way the guy plays. If everybody on this team played ball as hard as he does, we'd be unstoppable. If they trade him this season, I'm done. I'll be watching the Nats or the Braves - and I've been a Mets fan since 1968.

I hope you change your mind but I fully understand. Most of the writers currently on the site are inactive right now.

Take a rest for all this... watch Wheel of Fortune... even better, turn Netflix on and watch the 2nd season of 'Orange is the New Black'

We'll be here...

I think Murphy is safe for the rest of this year, and 2015... past that, no.

The Mets are grooming Dilson Herrera to step into 2B in 2016.

I don't know what the Mets are willing and are not wiling to do concerning players like Niese and others.
I would hate to see Niese go. They should not trade him unless the deal is in their favor. They should explore trading him. I know he is our only left handed starter but having a left handed starter is way over rated. Unless you know that you will be in the playoffs facing a heavily left handed hitting team I don't see the need.
How many times do you see a team messing with their rotation to get a left handed pitcher matched up against a certain team. I don't care if the Padres have all left handed hitters. Niese still pitchers yesterday.
The bottom line is that the Mets are in desperate need of offense. You need to give up something n order to get something. Niese could bring in a nice package of prospects from a contender that needs a pitcher. The Dodgers don't need a pitcher but maybe they can get Joc Pederson and more in a three team deal. They should explore trading Niese. Even if they do it doesn't mean they will get the right offer. The Mets don't need to trade him. The bottom line is they need to do something. Very loyal, long time Met fans are having a difficult time watching this team.

Great - take the best hitter we've got - one of the best contact hitters in the majors - and trade him for a draft pick Teach him to play OF or something - or move him to 3rd and move David to 1st or the OF. Wright's not going to be able to play 3rd for his whole contract. Not with his back injury. Two words come to mind - Scott Rolen.

Mack Ade said...

Every team in baseball respects what the Mets have done with pitching. The problem is that injuries have prevents from the final version of the 'dream rotation' to be formed.

We have to assume that Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard are keepers. Past that, you have a 2015 Bartolo Colon contract to respect, and pitchers like Gee, Niese, Wheeler, deGrom, and Montero.

The pieces are here to get a top outfield prospect like Joc Peterson AND a shortstop like Chris Owings.

Let's see if Alderson can pull something off before the trading deadline. He's good at this. He has the pitchers in his pockets regardless of injuries. You put Peterson and Owings on this team and lose only two of the pitchers I mentioned above and the entire team becomes respectable.

If no trades are done... well, all bets are off if even I follow this team anymore.
