6/8/14

June 7th 2014 -- Giants 5, Mets 4

Anthony Recker threw away a dropped 3rd strike to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and the Giants take advantage and score twice to beat the Mets 5-4.  The Mets were leading 4-3 going to the bottom of the ninth. Recker’s throw allowed Angel Pagan to get to first.  Hunter Pence then doubled to tie the game. Michael Morse then hit a long fly ball to right that went as a single to score Pence with the game winner. The game was a matchup between 38 year old Tim Hudson and 41 year old Bartolo Colon. Hudson came into the game with a 1.75 era and the Mets got to him early. In the 2nd Recker hit an RBI single to make it 1-0, in the 3rd Duda drove in David Wright to make it 2-0. Then with the bases loaded, Recker hit one off the right field wall that Chris Young on third base thought was caught and tagged up on. Young scored the 3rd run, but the confusion caught two Mets at second base and ended what could have been a much bigger inning.  The Giants make it 3-1 in the 5th when Buster Posey grounded into a double play that allowed Gregor Blanco to score. The Mets made it 4-1 in the 6th when Matt den Dekker scored on a wild pitch by George Kontos.  The Giants made it a 1 run game in the bottom of the 6th, a David Wright throwing error lead to a 2 run single by Angel Pagan. But Jeurys Familia came in to relieve Colon and struck out Posey with the bases loaded to end the inning.  Then in the ninth it all came undone as Jenrry Mejia blew his first save as a closer.  Anthony Recker went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Lucas Duda added two hits and an RBI single. Colon battled all night long. He went 5 2/3 innings allowing 8 hits, 3 runs (only 1 earned) he walked 2 and struck out 4. Colon gets the no decision. In his last 4 starts Colon’s ERA is 1.61. Jeremy Affeldt gets the win for the second straight night he’s now 2-1. Mejia takes the loss he’ snow 4-3.   The Mets have now lost 5 straight. They stand at 28-34 on the year and 15-17 road. Sunday Afternoon is the final game of the series Zach Wheeler (2-5 3.89) goes against his former team. Tim Lincecum (4-4  5.01) goes for San Francisco.
