I learned watching Vicente Lupo struggle tremendously last year in the Gulf Coast league after tearing up the DSL the year before that the DSL is way below Rookie Ball quality. I am real interested to see how Vicente and Ivan Wilson do this year, both of whom struck out at an extremely high rate in the GCL last year.
Leathersich, who always puts up video game strikeout #'s (286 in 167 for his career), really seems in a major groove - last 5 weeks, 14 innings, 28 K's, 7 hits, just (for Jack, it's just) 6 walks, and one run.
Last 10 innings, just 2 walks, great by anyone's standards.
And besides control, one of his big shortfalls as a lefty has been getting lefties out - but he seems much better on that this year so far.

On the minor league train of thought, I often think about Luis Mateo, and how he went from DSL to starring in Bklyn in 2012, to skipping Savannah and having a great first start in St Lucie in 2013 - then getting called up to AA for a spot start, only to hurt his arm leading to surgery.
I like to look for news on this guy, especially when it is a year since his Tommy John. No news! But amazingly, when he went to the DL in April 2013, who was promoted to replace him in AA Binghamton? JAKE DEGROM. Which shows 2 things: how fast deGrom moved up, and how highly Mateo was thought of at the start of 2013, to be promoted (even if briefly) before deGrom.

You always make thoughtful and insightful comments. Leathersich does seem to be in a groove right now. I hope it is a precursor of things to come. With decent command he could be great. (A second coming of Kimbrel?)
I was high on Mateo too, but haven't heard any news. Perhaps he is in extended spring training rebuilding arm strength. I hope he comes back the way Matz has.
FYI on Mateo...
He was on the field and in uniform before the season started in extended camp, but that doesn't mean he was ready to throw. I've asked around and have heard nothing... I'll ask again.
