Chris @tpgMets  -  Brandon Nimmo's BABIP in 741 career PA in the SAL & FSL = .407... Can't wait to see him in AA. Soon.

I simply loved how the Cubs drafted. The signed both top pick Kyle Schwarber ($3.125M vs. $4.625 slot) and Mark Zagunis for under slot, giving them an additional $1.6mil to over slot and sign high school high ceiling pitchers Carson Sands, Dylan Cease, and Justin Steele.

I, like most Mets fans, am not happy with the Mets outfield. We’ve come to love Juan Lagares and, in the long run, the Curtis Granderson deal might turn out to be a good one. One thing for sure is we better get used to having him around.

We want to believe that there are blue skies ahead. We have to give Sandy and Company some credit for addressing this position via the draft. They did use their top pick in two drafts for future outfielders, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto. My assumption is Conforto will begin this season with Brooklyn but, could finish the season in St. Lucie. We also have to assume both are at least slotted on paper into the 2016 Mets lineup. Add Granderson and Lagares to the mix and we could say that the outfield, through 2017, is complete.

(everything I read tells me that Conforto is pretty close to major league ready now so I can’t see any problem in him not making it there by 2016)

All we have to do now is get through one and a half more seasons for all of this to hit the field.

There seems to be two choices on how to proceed here.

1.    The Mets can go  the Chris Young route and sign themselves someone for a one year, 2016 deal

2.   They could continue to fill in their needs by using players like Matt den Dekker, Cesar Puello, Eric Campbell, and Andrew Brown that are already in the system

You guys talked about this in the comments section on Wednesday. Feel free to again, but if everything I say here comes through, there doesn’t seem to be any need to look at long term contracts like Matt Kemp. Nothing is a guarantee, but Nimmo looks for real and we have to assume that Conforto is also.

Most teams take the easy way out and spend big bucks on guys like Kemp, but is this a realistic approach for the Wilpons?

Discussion…

From Christopher Soto:

        I've been getting asked where some of our recent draftees would slot amongst our Top 25 listing. At this current point in time the Mets farm still has a decent amount of "B-" or better prospects that will probably fill out the Top 10 to 11. However a handful guys in the current 12 to 21 range have been disappointments this year.

That said I think its save to say that Conforto could slot into the 13-15 range. Ramos and Garcia could possibly squeeze in the 20-25 area. I'm solidly high on Prevost and think he could make a case for the back end of the 25. More research needs to be done on all these guys first...plus the Top 25 is getting pressure from the likes of Jon Gant, Akeel Morris, McGowan, LJ Mazilli, and the surprising Matt Reynolds.

This next update is gonna be really fun in the back end. I REALLY like how the Front Office drafted this year.

OF Cesar Puello continues to not be a primary factor for the Las Vegas 51s. He barely starts anymore and nothing is ever written about him.
I will tell you this. No Mets minor league manager has the permission to leave a player out of the lineup just because they don’t like him or personally think the guy doesn’t deserve to be in the starting lineup. These decisions come from Queens and any skunking being done to Puello comes Sandy-approved.

You don’t need an explanation here. You simply have to trust that Puello isn’t the prospect we all hoped him to be. Yes, it could be attitude, but the little we have seen written about him has simply said he isn’t performing to the level he did during that infamous PED year.

And lastly, let’s take another look at one of the only two teams that do any business with us, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Top prospect, OF Gregory Polanco, has now been called up by the Pirates. This leaves Andrew McCutchen (.312), Sterling Marte (.244), Jose Tabata (.299), Josh Harrison (.288) and Travis Snider (.230) to divide the other two outfield positions.

And, we’re not done yet. Prospects Wily Garcia and Josh Bell have a 2016 ETA. Austin Meadows, Jacoby Jones, and Harold Ramirez 2017. What are you going to do with all these outfielders?

You have to realize that the Pirates were a doormat for so many years and it was only a matter of time that they drafted a bunch of great young players.

The Mets have the young pitchers. The Pirates have the young outfielders.

The Mets need a young left fielder. The Pirates need a back end rotation pitcher.

There has to be a deal here somewhere.

Conforto not even a top 10 in this system lol who are these idiot writers?

Is there a webpage somewhere that keeps track of which players have signed so far?

I'm not surprised we lost. Starters Brown, Abreu, Flores have had how many at bats in the last 7 days? Rekker, DenDekker, CY don't hit much better than pitchers. I think I would prefer to see DeGrom at the plate over them.

Of course, the idiot manager will use the 0-fers to justify benching the aforementioned trio once again. Well, maybe not Abreu -- he's close to Terry's age.

Gotta give it to the brewers manager for making decision to walk the bases loaded, instead of pulling a terry collins and send in a lefty to face a hot Grandy........
I'm sure the brewers were thinking the same thing all mets fans were thinking. Why not face the 22 yr old kid who only plays once a week instead, because he gets no chance to get rolling while being wasted on the bench.

@Anon

Conforto has not even played a professional inning yet? The success rate of 1st round picks are barely 30% so lets see what he brings first before annointing him a Consensus Top 10. I did not place Nimmo or Smith in my Top 10 in our post draft updates either......yet both are surely in it now.

Plus our current Top 10 has 2 guys in the MLB, 3 in AAA, 1 in AA, and 3 who are in A+ and are about to be promoted to AA.

Conforto is likely to be assigned to Short Season-A. He's got a long way to go.

Michael S. said...

The problem I see is that the Mets don't have a cleanup hitter in their system. Nimmo will likely wind up hitting 2nd unless his power really develops and Conforto is more of a #5 hitter.

That last middle of the order hitter has to come from outside the organization.

Next year we can win with pitching and a slightly improved offense, but if Conforto and Nimmo both hit NYC in 2016, you're looking at

1. SS
2. Murphy
3. Wright
4. Granderson
5. RH 1B
6. Conforto
7. Catcher
8. Nimmo

I guess you can convert Plawecki to 1B and have d'Arnaud catch, but I'd like to see a legitimate MLB hitter to drive in runs.

@Mike S.

No Dominic Smith??

Morning everyone...

That was an especially painful loss last night that highlights the lack of offense this team has. Hats off to the pitching.

Could the Pirate not named in the Ike Davis deal yet be this guy?
Neal Kozikowski RHP played prep ball in Connecticut, which produces very little baseball talent. Even so, Baseball America did not list him among the top 20 prospects in lower New England, so he apparently flew under the radar. He has good size and a good build, with a fastball that has reached 92 but is mainly from 86-88. Kozikowski has a good change and a potentially good breaking ball. He also threw a cutter at the time of the draft. He throws from a 3/4 slot. The Pirates no doubt regard him as projectable. He has a commitment to Virginia Commonwealth University, but signed for $425,000, well over the slot amount of $155,400.

Bob -

I'd like to think it's outfield related, but we all are going to have to wait this one out.

@Bob

It is widely considered that he is in fact the PTBNL. Alderson's team was scouting him before last year's draft so there is a connection there. Reportedly he is now topping out at 94 and sitting between 90-91mph. Excellent control, good size, with an above average curveball. Natural downward movement on his fastball.

I like Dom a lot. The problem I see with Granderson, Murphy, and then adding Conforto and Nimmo the team is going to be too dependent on LH hitting.

Why don't you cut us a break? We're just a small bunch of Mets fans and self-proclaimed writers that discuss this stuff with each other. We all have opinions, but there is no reason to be disrespectful.

But if you do have to, don't hide behind the 'anonymous' tag. Type in your name so we can identify with you and have an intelligent conversation about this subject.

(BTW, I agree he probably should be in the top 10)

I don't know about Conforto. Keith Law thinks he's ready for AA ball.

@Steve

Whether he's ready or not.....Assignment trends suggest that Conforto is 75% likely to go to Brooklyn with the other 25% possibility being to Savannah

Saw Polanco at Marlins game last nite. He looks REAL good. Smooth, real nice swing, quick bat, good size, agile. I'm thinking that if you put McCutcheon and Polanco together, along with Marte, you've got something special in the making.

Ike, by the way, lined a 2 run double down the line, snapping out of a bad June slump(?) Interestingly, as soon as Ike's spot came up the next time and a lefty had been brought in, Gaby Sanchez hit for him. I wonder if Collins, after let's say Duda had a 2 run double, would have been so quick to go with Campbell. He should be as quick.

Giancarlo drilled an opposite field HR, legged out a double, and lined a single - easy to say "trade for him," but that would drain the Marlins of their marquis player. I'd be surprised if Marlins would do that for anything but a HUGE package.

Man, it was nice being in a domed stadium - super comfortable, no weather worries. Too bad we didn't get a retractable roof for Citi.

Guy starting at 1B for Marlins had 2 HR and no doubles in something like 85 at bats - Duda has much more extra base production, so while not as much as we'd like, that gives a little perspective that it could easily be worse there.
