I’m going to miss the second
round this year. It’s the one round that we usually follow with such
anticipation, hoping a big time name is still on the board. We have to temper
the loss of this pick with the knowledge that we have a true professional
roaming right field. Still, it could be worse. We could have signed Nelson Cruz.
Noah Syndergaard will make
his return to the Las Vegas 51s starting rotation next week.

What is a
Buddy Carlyle?
He gave
Mets fans three great innings Saturday in a game that seemed destined to be
lost. Someone in the front office made a very wise decision in sending down Rafael Montero and promoting Carlyle to join an
overworked and burnt out bullpen. Then, after an extra inning game on Friday
that seemed to never end, the Phillies and Mets did the overtime dance once
again and Carlyle had to come in buck naked to, what we all felt, to just take
the loss and go home. Well damn it, he didn’t do it.
Carlyle
was a second round draft pick in 1996 by the Cincinnati Reds and played for
eight professional baseball organizations before joining Las Vegas this year
(18-G, 1-1, 1.27)
He played
parts of 16 seasons in the minors (88-53, 3.63) and his MLB career has left a
lot to be desired (7-yrs, 11-12, 5.56), but he was there for the Mets on
Saturday and that’s good enough for me.

The Mets sent down den Dekker
again to Las Vegas.
My guess is this could be the last time den Dekker gets a
Queens invite. Shit likes this happens and, even though he really didn’t get a
shot, the next guy in line to ride the bench is Andrew Brown.

I hope Brownie (0-5 yesterday - he's human after all) gets the call up to the bench. Can't get in the line up if you are not on the team, so gotta start somewhere. 1) Get on the team 2) crack the line up.
It's not like the line up is impenetrable. Duda is 4th best at .241, Tejada 5th at .224. 6 through 9 are the members of the Mendoza Line Fan Club. Give Brownie a chance - he can't do worse than Grandy and Chris Young. he might just do a lot better.
Lagares - Rule # 1 with hammys, quads and obliques - always take a few extra days, or you may take a few extra weeks instead.
Great pitching - with Buddy, I'd not over-play my hand. Mets love to run with old vets until they lose the team a few unnecessary games. Avoid the urge, and thank him for a great game.
Duda getting more aggressive is a key to this team winning - hopefully it continues. A passive Duda is an unhelpful Duda.
Oddly enough, Ruben's gaffe in the 8th may have won the game for us. We'll never know, of course, but if Niese stayed in he might have given up a run. The pen didn't and kept the tie until the Dude won it.
Every time I see the Phillies, I want to strangle our GM for letting Byrd walk and spending the money on CY instead.
Any thoughts on Jairo Perez raking to a 360 average? Understand he is 25 but should he be on our radar?

Totally agree with you, Bill and Bob, on Byrd. Difference? He was 2 years, Chris Young one. Byrd surged the last 3/4 of last year, with no signs of let up, so to me he was the obvious choice.
I'd have signed him for 2 years, even perhaps Young for 1 year, and hoped that if either faltered, the young'uns would have been ready to step in or another move made. But that would mean Grandy not signed. I did not like that deal, much more than Young's - the latter you could survive as it is short term...but does anyone think Grandy for FOUR years makes sense, that despite this start in year one, he will regain his footing and give you anywhere near the $55MM you still owe him for the next 3 2/3 seasons? As he ages? You are a nice guy, Curtis, and I do want to root for you - they just made a very bad business deal with you. Nothing personal.
Byrd and Young would have been fine. Both short term, relatively, and maneuverable. The Bay Anchor was finally detached, and they turned right around and put another 4 year anchor on this team. Uggh.

Perez looks to be a nice find but he's playing at, at least, two levels lower than he should be. My guess is he's be a nice AAAA player at best
The Byrd - Young - Granderson discussion is interesting.
I always find that people become very hostile about the number of years on a contract when a player isn't producing at what that same fan feels is a proper level.
Alderson hates 2-year contracts, but he knew that it was going to make much more to sign Granderson. You have to evaluate this signing separately from the other two in a discussion.
There was absolutely no chance or opportunity for the Mets to sign Byrd for one year. If there was, Alderson would have scooped him up.
Obviously, when Young was willing to sign early for one year, Alderson got it done before another team offered two. I had no opinion about him then and less now.
I'm going to talk more about the outfield in tomorrow morning's report.

The club did make an attempt to re-sign Byrd. No one offered Byrd more than two years until Phillies swooped in and offered a 3rd year option that is easily attainable. Mets couldn't offer more than 1 year with Puello in AAA and Nimmo a year behind him.
I really appreciated how well Marlon played last year, and was very professional going about his business. And, he would look really good as the Mets #5 hitter in this lineup. That said, the comparison to C Young is not proper. I am on Alderson as much as anyone for his MLB additions, but the C Young over Byrd or the C Young over Nelson Cruz is flat out incorrect. As he stated, Alderson signed C Young to provide CF insurance and a chance at a low cost power bat. He also wanted to back one FA OF early given that he knew his ownership is cheap and was targeting a total payroll below 2013 (which is in fact what happened). Had the Mets resigned Byrd, they would have likely signed C Young as well and not Granderson. Now, Byrd for 2/$16 mil (It would likely have taken the Mets more to top the Phillie offer) may wind up being a better deal that Grandy for 4/$60 mil, especially given Grandy's start, but that deal will take years to measure. Regarding Nelson Cruz, his price tag when the Mets signed C Yooung and Grandy was way over Grandy's, and no one in baseball was offering anything close. Why Cruz decided to sign with the O's for $8 mil, there is no chance he would have signed with the Mets at that price, and likely wouldn't have signed with the Mets for even $14 mil. He was signing with a team in a crackerjack ballpark to put up big numbers and cash in on a multi-year next winter. With the Citifield stigma, that would have been a terrible move by Cruz and only accepted if he had no other offers, which wasn't the case. School is still out on C Young as well, but he needs to get hot really fast. For $7 mil, all he needs to do is put up a 1.5 WAR, or get hot enough to either help the team or allow them to deal him. The bigger sin for Alderson is the SS position, even with Ruben showing a little life.
Thanks, Chris. Did not know the Byrd Man has such an option. If they could have done 2 years before Phils' offer, they should have, but if they were waiting to see all offers and Phils stepped in, I can't fault them there for not in essence going 3 years.
I love Bill's thinking. If you sent up Lucas Duda to pinch hit in a key situation he might have struck out, too. How would Niese with 81 pitches been guaranteed to lose? Geez!
