The New York Mets Select OF Michael Conforto- OF- Oregon State University
While I am a bit disappointed the Mets passed on a shortstop prospect (Trea Turner), a big lefty (Sean Newcomb), and a more athletic, toolsier college outfielder (Bradley Zimmer), the Mets get the advanced college bat they wanted.
The pick is Michael Conforto out of Oregon State University. Conforto will most likely (assuming he signs, which he should) get slotted in next to Brandon Nimmo in high-A St. Lucie.

I hope I am wrong, but let's Go Conforto!!!! Why did u have to throw the word toolsy out there, I want Zimmer even more now. Maybe he is Italian? And we can have the next Italian stallion on our hands?lol
Sigh...They build a stadium for pitching/speed and defense...and then spend a first round pick on a player that:
A) Can't run
B) Can't field
C)Might hit home runs, as long as its a road game...
And don't hold you're breath on that St. Lucie assignment....This is the Mets....
I understand the logic here.
You can't change the stadium (can you) and Zimmer had no pop... and Conforto didn't have the worst K/AB %... but...
I just don't like the pick
He hits. And he hits a lot. There were questions about Zimmer and Turner's overall hit tools. My pick would have been Newcomb but Conforto has patience, power, and should be quick to the bigs...AND he's cheap. All things DePo, Sandy, and Wilpon like. I understand the pick too. But I would have gone elsewhere.
This was a very predictable pick. Alderson's kinda guy. Over .500 OBP this year, .463 career. Think Joey Votto or Miggy Cabrera in the outfield, although he may never have their pop. He can hit for average and will continue to add power as he grows. Not my first choice, but a good pick. Will slot in as a good corner OF next to Nimmo in center.
Personally, I would have preferred Trea Turner since I am uncertain about the shortstop position going forward. And I might have preferred Brad Zimmer, although I think it is a toss up between them. But I am perfectly OK with passing on Sean Newcomb because I think we have sufficient pitching depth, both in the rotation and the pen, to carry us into the future.
I see Conforto moving through the system fairly rapidly, getting to Citi some time late 2016 or early 2017.
Does the mets passing on Newcomb suggest the ptbnl for Ike is one of the lefty pitchers?
the speculation is that the PTBNL is RHP NEIL KOZIKOWSKI
Figures. We're crying for offense and he goes for another MnL pitcher.
UGH!
There is no chance Nimmo starts in CF over Lagares
Bill, he's a really good pitcher, especially for Ike Davis. Short of JaCoby Jones, I'm fine with him as the ptbnl.
I dont know why Iam so down on Conforto. Maybe because you always want them to draft the most exciting player!? And conforto really isnt it.
But lets see it positivly. He reminds me alot of Jay Bruce. Conforto projects as a Lefty bat with a .260 avg and 25 homer? Sounds like Jay Bruce to me. and to be honest, I would love Jay Bruce in our lineup so lets just hope mochael is reaching his ceiling
I like this pick. There were 3 options in Turner, Newcomb or Conforto. I'm comfortable that we have gone the right way.
The Mets way is to moan and grumble. Let's give this kid a chance before we write him off.
I am curious if he is a power bat why he only had 8 Hrs in close to 60 college games. Anyone care to weigh in on that? Also- am not a college BB follower, so what sort of competition was he up against? Lastly, size, age?
Any chance they start Conforto in AA? If he starts in A+, it'll be od 2016 at the earliest before we have a power bat come up. We'll either have to find one somewhere this offseason, or (more likely) slide the timetable back another year. David's not getting any younger. He'll be 33 in 2016. Wonder how he feels about Sandy's plan now? It's starting to look like David will be the Mets' version of Ernie Banks - great player, with one team his whole career that never sees a WS.
You people are fools. Conforto has moderate speed. But his intelligence on the base paths more than makes up for any loss. And his fielding is stellar. His jump is superb, and his finish is better. And he is a weekly highlight reel with his arm to home. He is rarely more than four feet down line on a strong throw.
You all need to go watch his work in the field. You will be singing a different tune soon.
Oh... and then there's his bat.
@Anon
All we have as of right to base Conforto off of is his College stats and reports from team and Baseball America scouts.
Perhaps he does play better defense and have a stronger arm.....again....we don't know that right now. We'll get the chance to see it once he signs and is assigned to a team.
