The Binghamton Mets mustered just one hit in the first five innings, falling 6-3 against the Portland Sea Dogs Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton registered five hits for the second straight game, but unlikeTuesday night, it wasn’t enough for a victory. Portland starter William Cuevas matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts en route to his fourth win of the year.
Portland brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning in the person of Brandon Nimmo, but the rally fell shy when Nimmo grounded out to short. The B-Mets hit 1-for-7 with men in scoring position, only having multiple baserunners in the two innings they scored.
For the third straight game, Portland got on the board first. With two aboard and two outs, Rainy Lara issued a walk to Portland’s nine hitter, Blake Tekotte, to load the bases for Mike Miller. Miller proceeded to single to left field to drive in two runs. It was the shortstops third hit in his last 21 at-bats.
Binghamton notched their first run in the third, when Cuevas walked the first two batters of the frame. The righty missed out of the strike zone with eight of nine pitches, issuing his only free passes of the game. With two outs, Nimmo lined a single to right field to get the B-Mets within one.
Portland added on in the fifth, when Ruben Tejeda singled to right with two outs to extend the inning. That allowed Keury De La Cruz to bat, who drilled his third home run of the season well beyond the right field wall.
Portland would later tack on two runs against reliever Beck Wheeler in the seventh. The righty walked Carlos Asujae, who came around to score on a Tejeda double to left. Tejada then moved up to third base and come in to score on back-to-back wild pitches from Wheeler.
Aderlin Rodriguez beat out a ground ball to short with one out in the seventh, and came around to score on a Xorge Carrillo double to left field. It was the final batter Cuevas faced, as he was relieved by Jonathan Aro. With two outs, Aro induced a ground ball to third that was botched by Tejada, allowing Carrillo to score Binghamton’s third and final run. After a Jared King walk, it gave Nimmo a chance as the tying run, but Aro induced the ground ball out.
Cuevas (4-1) got the win, allowing two runs and four hits in 6.1 innings while striking out 10. Lara (2-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs and nine hits in five innings.
The B-Mets (15-11) wrap up their series with the Portland Sea Dogs Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium, with a 6:35 PMfirst pitch. Binghamton RHP Gabriel Ynoa (2-1, 3.97) gets the ball against RHP Kyle Kraus (0-0, 7.00).
POSTGAME NOTES: Brandon Nimmo has recorded multiple hits in five of his last 10 games… The 10 B-Met hits are the fewest in back-to-back games since the second and third games of the season, against Akron (9)…Wednesday was Binghamton’s second loss to Portland in the team’s last eight matchups.
