Daytona Beach 4 - St. Lucie 1


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 25, 2018) – Daytona starting pitcher Wennington Romero led the Tortugas to a 4-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Friday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Romero limited the Mets to one run and two hits over eight impressive innings. He faced the minimum through the first seven innings and retired 16 straight batters at one point.

The only run the Mets scored against Romero came in the eighth inning when Michael Paez hit a leadoff home run. It was the second home run in three games for Paez, who now owns the team lead with four long balls.

The Tortugas scored the game’s first run in the second inning on a RBI single by Brantley Bell.

Mitch Nay led off the fifth with a double against Mets starter Gabriel Llanes. T.J. Friedl followed with a RBI single to make it 2-0.

The final two runs for Daytona came on sac flies from Tyler Stephenson and Jose Siri in the fifth and seventh inning, respectively.

For the Mets, Andres Gimenez went 2 for 4 and raised his batting average to .293. He is now on a nine-game hitting streak.

Joe Zanghi pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.

Llanes suffered the loss. He gave up eight hits and three runs in 4.1 innings.

Friedl went 3 for 3 and reached base four times for the Tortugas.

Ryan Hendrix picked up his second save when he struck out Desmond Lindsay to end the game with runners on first and second.
