John From Albany - Mets News and Breakfast Links 2/8/2021

Good Morning.  Mets agree to terms with Albert Almora, may still be in on Jackie Bradley, Jr. and  Trevor Bauer apologizes to Mets Fans.

Mets Links:

As we had yesterday on Mack's Mets:  Mets sign CF Albert Almora

Metstradamus: "From 2016-18, Almora produced splits of .289/.326/.412. In 2019, he started the season at .259/.302/.438 through May 29th. That was the night where Almora was involved in a terrible accident where a foul ball hit a little girl in the stands in Houston. Since then, Almora took a sharp downturn, hitting .215/.242/.328 the rest of the season. And 2020 was similarly horrible, hitting .167/.265/.200."

Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets’ Jackie Bradley Jr. pursuit may not be over. "In the last week, the Mets had an extended Zoom meeting with Bradley that included team president Sandy Alderson, acting GM Zack Scott...Scott, in particular, knows Bradley well from their shared time working with the Red Sox...The problem has been that Bradley never fully fit the Mets, as they are constructed without them being able to use a DH. His presence would have forced the Mets to decide every day who does not play among Bradley, Nimmo, Pete Alonso and Dom Smith."

Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets thought they had reached a deal with Trevor Bauer. "A source said that Mets president Sandy Alderson, who has been involved with three organizations over the past four decades, felt he had never proceeded to this extent of negotiations and not finalized the deal."

SNY.TV: Trevor Bauer explains what happened before signing with Dodgers: 'Mets fans, I owe you an explanation and apology'.

I'd rather think about the slugging of Carlos Cortes than Trevor Bauer.

Nice that he apologized, but 1) when you find yourself always apologizing, grow up, and 2) he's still a jerk.

How could the Mets still be interested in Jackie Bradley Jr. I would only be interested if he came back down to what people thought he'd get early in the off season, which I thought was about 2 years, $20 million. We got a team to build - you want to be here? Be reasonable.

I think if the DH were to come into play, Bradley would certainly be worth another look, even if it costs more that that. With no DH, I understand that we believe in Smith and they need his stick in there regularly. (I not only understand, I agree 100% .. Smith is perhaps my favorite Met these days).

Remember 1969, when righties are pitching, a line up with the 3 outfielders being Smith, Conforto, and Nimmo would be among baseball's worst defensively - but boy, that offense would be really something.

That would have been a benefit of Bauer - anyone who strikes out nearly half his outs doesn't have to worry as much about an outfield with weak defense.

JB Jr will make a lot more $$ if the DH is OK'd for 2021. Even if it seems dead right now, it is hard for me to believe they will start the full season forcing pitchers to not only greatly increase their inning counts, but to hit as well.

When Cohen was being interviewed he said he hired the best people and stayed out of threir way.
Is Sandy the “best people”?
So Cohen comes in, gets talked into hiring Sandy for ‘stability’ and so far he’s managed to get a salary dump from Cleveland and misses on ALL 3 FA difference makers.
Cohen must be steaming.
Not what he envisioned I’m sure.

I am with you Rich - only Mets GM that was good at bringing in Big Free Agents - Omar. Maybe there were other issues but Omar should be lead Free Agent negotiator IMO.
