METS SIGN LHP MIKE MONTGOMERY & RHP TOMMY HUNTER
TO MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACTS
FLUSHING, N.Y., February 14, 2021 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has signed LHP Mike Montgomery and RHP Tommy Hunter to minor league contracts and invited both to Major League Spring Training.
Montgomery, 31, has posted a 3.84 career ERA (231 earned runs/541.0 innings) during his six-year major league career with the Mariners, Cubs and Royals. He has appeared in 183 major league games and made 70 career starts.
The 6-5, 220-pounder recorded the final out of the 2016 World Series, helping the Cubs clinch their first championship in 108 years.
Montgomery pitched in three games for Kanas City in 2020, making one start, and went 3-9 with a 4.95 ERA (50 earned runs/91.0 innings) in 33 combined games, 13 starts with the Cubs and Royals in 2019.
Hunter, 34, has pitched 13 years in the majors with the Rangers, Orioles, Cubs, Indians, Rays and Phillies.
The 6-3, 250-pounder is 56-45 with 22 saves and a 4.08 ERA (391 earned runs/863.1 innings) in 472 major league games. He went 0-1 with one save and a 4.01 ERA (11 earned runs/24.2 innings) in 24 contests with Philadelphia in 2020.

Montgomery and Hunter seem like good filler, and most likely nothing more - someone who can occasionally be tapped into when needed. Hopefully, they are not signing them for the MLB team with the intent for them to be full year players for them.
Montgomery is a league average pitcher at best, ans wouldn’t get a look if he wasn’t a lefty. Hunter’s velocity has had a steady decrease the last two years ans it shows in his results. If Hunter’s problem was a physical one - from his surgery in 2019 that hopefully he is fly recovered from.
We now have 1,376 starters and 5,787 relievers in Syracuse.
