Mack's Mock Pick #63 - RHP - Jack Leftwich

Jack Leftwich

Mack's spin -

I may be the only draft guy that still believes in this guy.

He burst on the scene as a prep player but really hasn't done much more since then.

This year, as of 4-3, he is 7-games, 6-starts, 4-2, 3.40, 0.98, 39.2-IP, 38-K

I still think this is a big future talent in this game.

Leftwich went undrafted in 2020 after ranking as the No. 157 player in the class and will return to Florida where he’ll be a part of a talented Gators pitching staff. A physical, 6-foot-4, 220-pound righthander, Leftwich has plenty of arm strength and runs his fastball up into the 95-96 mph range, but the pitch doesn’t have much life and because of that has been squared up at times. He also throws a slider in the upper 70s and low 80s and the pitch looks like an average breaking ball at times, but it is inconsistent and comes out of his hand as a below-average offering regularly as well. He’s also thrown a changeup, but the pitch isn’t much of a weapon at the moment. Leftwich has posted a 4.62 ERA over 165.2 innings with Florida, while striking out 169 batters (9.2 per nine) and walking 52 (2.8 per nine). He has solid control of his arsenal, but without any true out-pitch or swing-and-miss offering he profiles as more of a back-of-the-rotation arm. Leftwich also locks out his front knee in his landing, which has been a concern for teams in the past, given the audible clicking sound that comes with it.

1-9-21 - gators wire -

As a freshman at Florida, Jack Leftwich appeared in 24 games as a pitcher, making 12 starts and tossing a total of 81.1 innings, the most by a freshman at Florida since Logan Shore‘s 95.2 in 2014.

In 2019, Leftwich became exclusively a starting pitcher, posting a 5.31 ERA in 62.2 innings over 13 starts. He was hampered throughout the season by a blister on his pitching hand but rebounded nicely to record a 1.77 ERA over his final three outings. His high point of that campaign was a complete-game shutout at Taylor Stadium against the No. 24 Missouri Tigers on May 17. To date, this remains the lone complete game in his Gators career.
