National Pastime.com:

1961

The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc. announces the New York National League franchise's team nickname will be the Mets. Other names considered included the Avengers, Burros (a play on the word boroughs), Continentals, Islanders, Jets, Rebels, Skyliners, and the Meadowlarks, which was the first choice of owner Joan Payson.

1973

On a rainy night at Shea Stadium, the seventh-inning line drive off the bat of Atlanta's Marty Perez strikes Jon Matlack's forehead so hard that the ball ricochets into the Mets dugout. Fortunately, the 23 year-old southpaw sustains only a hairline fracture of his skull, and will return to the mound on May 19 to blank the Bucs for six innings at Pittsburgh.

1997

At the age 20, Ryan Jaroncyk, the Mets first-round draft pick of the Mets in 1995, retires from baseball, citing he finds the game 'boring'. The healthy, hard-working, introspective athletic graduate of Orange Glen High School (Escondido, CA), who the team had hoped to be their shortstop of the future, leaves the franchise after receiving an $850,000 signing bonus, which the club will not ask their former player to return.

Baseball Reference:

1963: The Braves acquire Chico Fernandez from the Tigers for Lou Johnson and cash, then turn around and swap him to the Mets for Larry Foss.

1983 - Darryl Strawberry gets his first major league hit, a single that scores Danny Heep, in a 10 - 5 Mets win over the Reds.

1998: Cardinals 1B Mark McGwire hits his 400th career home run in a 9 - 2 loss to the Mets. He is the 27th player to reach 400, and does so in fewer at bats than anyone in history, 4,726. Babe Ruth had taken 127 more at-bats, having held the old record.

2015 - Cole Hamels and the Philles win 3 - 1 over the Mets and Matt Harvey. Jonathan Papelbon picks up the save, his 112th as a member of the Phils, to tie Jose Mesa atop the team's leader board; he is also the Boston Red Sox all-time save leader, with 219. Only Robb Nen had previously led two separate teams in saves before him.

Great for Mazeika, wish they gave him a hit.

Prospect hitters are on fire. Good stuff.

Szapucki threw 3.2 scoreless for Syracuse. Maybe Peterson should be a tad concerned.

Horrible news about Allan, with JT Ginn soon to return from TJS Purgatory. Incredible that Alan missed 2020, and now will miss 2021 and 2022.

Kelenic two SHOTS in AAA debut. Call him Pfizer Kelenic.

Mets have 1 no hitter in 60 years. MLB has 5 of them in 5 weeks.

What happened to all of the Mets minor league starting pitchers in the minors? We are missing many starting pitchers like Acosta, Dibrell, Corneilly, Hutchinson, etc. Is this because of missing a 2020 season these pitchers were not ready to pitch.

John From Albany said...

Raw,

I think so. A number of players stayed behind in the minor league camp. The only one I know specifically there is Wilmer Reyes but have been told there are others as well. In light of what happened to Matt Allan, I am ok if they take extra caution with the pitchers.

FYI, Oswalt and Harol Gonzalez are both on the Syracuse IL.

Raw -

John is correct.

2021 is going to be a topsy turvy year in the minors where many will never get their mojo back.

A very disappointing start for the starters so far.

So what is the deal with the 'minor league camp'? I assume that is where some of the prospects that are not on the St. Lucie roster are - guys like Ramirez, Dominguez, Valdez, etc. What is the structure of that - do they play games against other clubs or is it just an internal development extended spring training?

Remember1969 said...

For all the press given to the rat, I was hoping to see some comment about the Lindor bunt in the 9th inning - who is taking responsibility for that terrible approach? It would be a bigger deal if they had lost, but still . .

Incredibly sad news about Matt Allen.

Fantastic play by McCann under the circumstances. Not only having to sprint over, but to be wary of the quickly oncoming brick wall, the bats laying there that can roll an ankle, and the bases loaded situation with the Mets already down four runs. If the inning continued, a hit would have been a crusher.

Cabrera is slow! He had no chance and the ball one hopped the wall?

I put an article on Mets360 for my monthly contribution on deGrom’s improvements and why - basically a recap of a fantastic but long video by Ben Brewster from Trade Athletics. It got put up later than normal so it may have been missed. John, you asked me earlier last week about my next piece...

The media just couldn't take no for an answer. They must have asked the same question in at least eight different ways. The clubhouse narrative was obviously prescripted. Squirrel or raccoon matters not to me. Perhaps unrelated, there's something still very Wilponian about the way this team conducts itself. If Steve Cohen needed Sandy Alderson to facilitate his purchase of the Mets, fine. But now that Cohen is inside the door, he should rethink this front office.

Inputs

Mets are sort of "OK right now" with their pitching staff. But they are also kind of straddling the "OK" and "Ah Oh" line a bit too. I think anyway.

Starting pitching depth from the here and now is to me leaning a tad bit thin you could say. Lucchesi needs to show up today, and not his peapod version.

I am not the MLB commish (trust me here you should be grateful for that) so I don't know if trades are in vogue and an acceptable thing right now or not. But the Mets are somewhat thin from the left side I have noticed. I have zero doubts that David Peterson will absolutely come around and lock in soon. He's a stud lefty in the making. Maybe Joey Lucchesi as well, but not as sure here yet with him.

So...

What about this idea?

I have been watching a Red Sox lefty starter for three years. The Red Sox haven't brought him up. His name is Daniel McGrath (an Aussie) and he has pitched both starting and relieving in the BoSox minors.

Here, we have Harol Gonzales down in the minors. A right handed hard thrower who has shown some promise. The Red Sox currently have two starters (ERod & Eovaldi) plus three older hopes and wishes pitchers in their rotation. Ironically though, Boston holds the best won/lost record in all of MLB right now, but without all that much help from their 3-5 starters. 20 wins/13 loses is their current record.

Why?

It's their hitting really. It's really good and timely. They don't even miss Mookie Betts or Andrew Benintendi at all.

So...

I might (perhaps) enetertain a trade for Boston's Daneil McGrath (age 26, lefty) for the Mets Harol Gonzales (age 26, righty), as a sort of potential insurance plan for here.

To me, it's a win/win for both ball clubs.

Then the Mets have McGrath (L), Szapucki (L), Kilome (R), Foley (R), Oswalt (R), and eventually Smith (R) close. A AAA six pack for the "just in case."

I have to confer with you on your opinions.

Whatever happened down in the tunnel, it's over and done. However, it sure did work nicely too, didn't it?

I do love seeing prior people being brought back to organizations. It tends to lend consistency and can be invigorating for the team and fans as a whole.

However, sometimes it can detract as well from the new management team taking over the reins seamlessly. Which in this form, can be a tightrope walk kind of a thing and perhaps with too many chefs in the proverbial pizza kitchen. Can be tricky to decipher.
