Syracuse - Mets drop series finale to Red Sox, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon in Worcester

An early Worcester lead proved to be too much for Syracuse to overcome in a 7-4 Mets loss to the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at Polar Park in Worcester, MA. Wilfredo Tovar had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Syracuse in the loss.

Worcester (7-5) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Marcus Wilson doubled. A wild pitched moved Wilson to third base. After Jeter Downs struck out, Josh Ockimey walked, and Cesar Puello was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jett Bandy was then hit by a pitch to bring home a run for a 1-0 Red Sox lead. Kiké Hernandez followed with a 457-foot home run over the left-center-field wall for a grand slam and a 5-0 Worcester advantage.

Syracuse (2-10) scored its first run in the top of the third. Johneshwy Fargas led off with a walk and stole second base. Mason Williams followed with a single into right field that scored Fargas to trim Worcester’s lead to four, 5-1.

The Mets pulled closer in the fifth. With two outs, Fargas singled. Fargas stole second base and stole third base as Williams worked a walk to put runners on first and third. Tovar followed with a double off the center-field wall, scoring both Fargas and Williams to cut the Worcester advantage to two, 5-3.

The Red Sox extended their lead in the seventh. With one out, Hernandez and Jack Lopez hit back-to-back solo home runs, putting Worcester up 7-3.

Syracuse got a run back in the eighth. With one out, Tovar walked, and Brandon Drury walked to put runners at first and second. On a wild pitch, Tovar advanced to third and scored on a Deivy Grullon groundout to make it a 7-4 ballgame.

The Mets have an off day on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday night at home against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
