Mack's Mock Pick - #27 - RHP - Chase Petty

Chase Petty

Mack's spin -

Petty is a very talented righty that throws a 102 fastball.

Do you think that 30 teams will pass in the first round on someone that throws 102?

He was my early favorite for 1.10 but everyone thought I was nuts.

I have a fully feeling he will someday prove me worthy of that projection.

Chase Petty, RHP, New Jersey (BA rank: 25)

Petty is the most famous high school pitcher in the region thanks to a fastball that has reached 102 mph. He threw on May 17 with a predetermined limit of 50 pitches, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk in four innings. Petty can touch triple digits, but on this day he sat at 93-95 mph, touching 97. Of those 50 pitches, he induced four swings and misses, with one on the fastball and three on the slider. There's a lot to like with Petty between his impressive athleticism, arm speed, a big fastball and a slider that flashes plus at times. But scouts also have concerns about his control, the effort to his delivery and the general riskiness with high school righthanders. When the Indians drafted Daniel Espino in the first round at No. 24 overall in 2019, he was another high school righthander who could crack 100 mph with a plus breaking ball but question marks on his control and delivery. Petty could end up going in a similar area of the draft, though some teams would have him lower.

18. Cardinals: Chase Petty, RHP, Mainland Regional HS (Linwood, N.J.)

Yes, yes, we know he’s not that big, but his fastball is consistently triple-digits with a lot of sink, and he's got a really good slider and some feel to pitch.

27. Padres: Chase Petty, RHP, Mainland Regional HS (Linwood, N.J.)

Petty's profile as a 6-foot right-hander with some effort in his delivery scare some clubs, though it’s hard not to love a fastball that reaches 100 mph with turbo sink and an upper-80s slider.

17. Cincinnati Reds: Chase Petty, RHP, Mainland Regional (NJ) HS

Petty is a 6-foot-0, 185-pound righty who has power stuff and a good feel for pitching. His fastball hits triple digits. Petty is a high-risk, high-reward prospect who might profile better in the bullpen. Although the track record for right-handed prep pitchers who throw triple digits is not good, Petty’s potential likely will cause him to go in the first round.

Chase Petty, RHP, Mainland Regional (N.J.)

Perfect Game All-American Classic participant Chase Petty (2021, Somers Point, NJ) continues to up the ante whenever he takes the mound and his first start of the season was no different. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-hander opened up the first inning against Holy Spirit sitting 96-98 mph, while touching 99 several times and eclipsing triple digits a handful of times with a high of 101 mph. Yes, a 101 mile per hour fastball from a high school pitcher that just turned 18 years old and has continually raised the stakes every time we have laid eyes on him.

There has been concerns revolving around Petty’s delivery and effort level for some time now, but if this performance is any indication of what is to come; those concerns should at least start to dissipate mildly. The University of Florida commit clearly showed ability to check off the necessary boxes when it comes to being considered a starter long term. The extremely athletic Petty held 95-97 exclusively from innings two through seven, even touching 99 mph with a pitch in the sixth inning. The marked improvements both physically and mechanically have only added to an already electric three-pitch repertoire.

18) Cardinals: Chase Petty, RHP, Mainland Regional HS (NJ)

Yes, he’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he’s touching triple digits and has a better feel for pitching than you’d expect for an undersized guy with power stuff.

Chase Petty waited two years for Tuesday afternoon.

So, the Mainland Regional High School senior pitcher had an immediate reaction when he heard Mustangs coach Billy Kern talk to another player about possibly pitching the final inning of their anticipated matchup with top-ranked Holy Spirit.

The major league first-round draft prospect certainly did. The Somers Point resident finished with a flourish, getting a strikeout on a 98 mph fastball for the final out of the Mustangs’ 5-2 win.

Overall, Petty allowed one hit, struck out 13, walked three and hit a batter. He threw an efficient 89 pitches in seven innings.

The Mainland Regional High School baseball players looked behind the backstop before the Mustangs’ scrimmage against St. Augustine Prep last week and saw 40 to 50 major league scouts, many of them holding radar guns.

The scouts were there to see Mainland Regional senior pitcher Chase Petty. The scene should be even wilder when Petty makes his season debut on the mound at Holy Spirit in Absecon at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The absolute most electric arm in the Prep Class. And quite frankly, it might not be that close. Petty brings a Fastball that reaches Triple Digits, sitting 94-97 MPH with Average Spin Rates, but will show some fantastic movement. From hard 2 seamers in on RHH to some natural cut at times. With improved command, it has every chance of reaching a future 70 Grade and honestly even 80. It is that good. The Slider gets big Horizontal Movement and is a wipeout pitch against RHH. He rounds the arsenal out with a Changeup that again, shows plus movement, just Below-Average, command, but shows true potential to give him a possible 3 Plus-Pitch mix. The command is Below Average and the high effort delivery will lead some to bullpen risk questions, I think if the command can settle at that 45, he has a chance, but without it, it’s an uphill battle even with his nasty stuff. Similar stuff to Max Meyer.

15. Chase Petty, RHP, Mainland Regional HS, Linwood, N.J.

Petty can ramp up to top-end velocities but normally pitches in the low-to-mid-90s. His power and youth should help the Florida commit sway scouts.

2-27-21 - top hs players -

Chase Petty – Petty is blessed with absolutely electric arm speed, and his fastball sits in the upper 90s with hellacious run thanks to his low arm slot. He also shows an above-average slider and some feel for a changeup. He’s athletic, but there isn’t much room for projection, and his somewhat violent delivery and occasional command issues give him elevated reliever risk.

6-1  185  R/R RHP Somers Point, NJ Florida Mainland

Up to 94 at PG Underclass All American Games; electric arm speed from tough slot, generates big life to FB; slider bites hard & late in low-80s. Up to 97 at the PG National and 98 a the PG Elite. He may have the best arm speed in the class. Very good athlete too.

When it comes to hard-throwing prep arms, the past decade has produced plenty of heartbreakers. Petty, a Florida commitment, is capable of bumping triple digits and flashing a pair of above-average secondaries. A decade ago, his smaller stature (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) and lower release point may have had teams disregarding him as another face in the crowd. These days, the bigger concern might be with his fastball shape; it features more run than rise, meaning it doesn't take full advantage of his flat plane to the top of the zone. Presuming Petty slides to the latter half of the first round, a contender might walk away feeling like even the winners get lucky sometimes.

I love hard throwing pitchers but not sure he is my tenth overall guy.
