Ethan Wilson
Mack's spin -
I had hoped for more this season from Wilson; however, he still had a great season leading his team into The Regionals. A slow start after a high ankle sprain didn't help here either.
Lots of talent and walks a ton.
Projects as either a low end starter or high end utility outfielder.

Shaking off the effects of an ankle injury early, Wilson has shown a very advanced approach at the plate (27/16 K/BB ratio) and penchant for making hard contact, with more raw power that he’s not tapped into yet consistently in games.

After a high ankle sprain bothered him in the first month of the season, Wilson is back to being one of the more polished and consistent hitters in the college ranks and could have plus power if he drives more balls in the air.

He can hit, with power, and draws a ton of walks. The Twins have shown they like college performers, with picks like Aaron Sabato and Trevor Larnach in their recent first-round history.

Much like many 2020 studs who find themselves in first round consideration at the moment, Wilson is having a so-so start to his season. When everything is clicking, he devastates pitchers that leave the ball over the plate, specifically speaking, southpaws. His defense isn’t as comparable, so what will get him drafted in the top-20 is his offense.

Some of the better LH Power in the class, however comes with inconsistencies and lack of track record against strong competition. Came into 2021 with an ankle injury and has been slow to start and has seen some stock drop due to it. Very well may see himself rise as the season rolls along and he gets comfortable in the box. Plus power potential that will ultimately ride on the hit tool to be a legitimate offensive force, or a volatile LH Power hitter. Corner OF Profile defensively.

South Alabama is a pro-ball factory. In addition to serving as a launching pad for former All-Stars like Luis Gonzalez, David Freese, Lance Johnson, and Jon Lieber, the Jaguars have had 10 players popped in the past six drafts. The next South Alabama player to join the ranks will be Wilson, who has put himself on the radar by hitting .330/.425/.632 with 20 homers and 24 stolen bases for his collegiate career. Scouts have some concern about his long-term defensive value (he's a left fielder) and the stiffness in his swing, which has resulted in a 20-percent K rate. His feel for the zone and for hard contact should still enable him to go sometime in the first round.

Player of the Year: Ethan Wilson, OF, South Alabama
Wilson was voted a first-team Preseason All-American by major league scouting directors and is a projected first-round pick. He can do a bit of everything at the plate and hit .282/.329/.465 with three home runs and six stolen bases. He has a lot to live up to between his draft status and winning both the conference’s player and freshman of the year awards in 2019, but he has the tools to be one of the best hitters in the country.

When the Pirates selected South Alabama outfielder Travis Swaggerty 10th overall in 2018, it was just the second time in 27 years that a Jaguar was drafted among the top 10 picks in the draft.
But luckily for the South Alabama program, it won’t have to wait that long again. That’s because third-year sophomore outfielder Ethan Wilson projects as a top 10 overall pick this summer if he continues his current trajectory.
The pandemic may have cost him most of last season and a summer showcase opportunity in the Cape Cod League or with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, but it has barely put a dent in Wilson’s draft stock. Thanks to his loud offensive tools, he was voted a Preseason All-American by major league scouting directors and enters the 2021 season as one of the most exciting hitters in all of college baseball.

Areas To Improve: Make the most of supplemental tools, continue mashing
In a normal year, Wilson would have likely had an opportunity to prove his bat and power in either the Cape Cod League or with the Collegiate National Team. Without those opportunities, it’ll be interesting to see what scouts do with a corner profile, Sun Belt Conference masher. He’ll need to continue hitting at a high level over a full season after a bit of a blip last spring in 18 games, and while he’s unlikely to provide much value from his defensive or running, getting the most out of those tools could help alleviate some of the pressure that is sure to be on his bat.

Another top outfield prospect the Marlins might consider taking at 16 is Ethan Wilson out of South Alabama. The Marlins would be getting a good left-handed hitter with above-average power but is limited defensively.
Wilson had a tremendous freshman season batting .345 and broke five-time All-Star Luis Gonzalez’s freshman home run record. He smashed 17 home runs as a freshman and also posted a 1.139 OPS.
Wilson is a career .330 hitter but also has good plate discipline and draws lots of walks. Offensively, Wilson projected to be an everyday player due his hitting tools and his ability to hit left-handers well.
As for his defense, Wilson is pretty limited and projects to play left field at the next level. He has below average speed and arm strength but an average glove. If the Marlins draft Wilson, he’ll be another quality bat to their farm system and could be a player who rises through their farm system quickly if he produces at the dish.

Ethan Wilson
OF, South Alabama
A name that often gets lost in the shuffle of the recent helium names on public draft boards is Wilson. A strong performer his freshman year with South Alabama, a mediocre performance in the shortened 2020 season and some questions around his quality of competition have dulled the buzz a touch. Make no mistake, Wilson can hit. It might be plus power, optimized to drive the ball with impact and loft. Wilson's approach seemed to back up from his freshman season at South Alabama when he ran away with the Sun Belt Player of the Year award. The Yankees land another proven College bat in the mold of 2020 pick Austin Wells.
