Michael McGreevy

Mack's spin -

Classic 6-4, 200 frame throwing 97, McGreevy has flown up the charts in the later parts of this season.

He could easily be a late first round pick.

RHP Michael McGreevy

McGreevy has an ideal pitcher’s build with his 6’4”, 215-lb frame which combined with his impeccable control sound like he has what it takes to remain a starting pitcher. Pitchers with a 12:1 K:BB ratio are rare – for reference only Gerrit Cole and Zach Eflin have reached those height this season among qualified starters.

A starter’s frame with command plus two solid pitches already (fastball and slider) with the potential for two more (curve and changeup) is exactly what you look for in a pitching prospect. In many ways, McGreevy sounds like a safe pick, yet with the reports of his increased velocity and improving slider there may be even more untapped upside the Yankees could unlock.

College pitchers who scouts feel confident can start always creep up and McGreevy keeps moving up boards with good size, stuff and feel for pitching, not to mention an eye-popping 100/8 K/BB ratio.

No college pitcher has more helium right now than McGreevy, who endears himself to clubs with his combination of pitch data, polish and performance. He struck out 15 while permitting just two hits and no walks against Cal Poly in his last start.

Michael McGreevy - RHP, UC Santa Barbara — No. 34 (+26)

Our most recent mock draft has McGreevy sliding into the back of the first round to a team that works wonders with his exact profile and last Friday McGreevy dominated a Cal Poly lineup that includes talented 2022 prospect Brooks Lee. He struck out 15 batters and walked none over eight innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run (via homer). He’s got a great frame, locates a 91-95 mph fastball to both sides of the plate, lands a plus curveball and also mixes in a slider and changeup. He checks a ton of boxes.

This is the area of the Draft where the “safer” college arms come in and tend to creep up as the Draft gets closer. McGreevy has an intriguing combination of feel for pitching and some upside.

Michael McGreevy, RHP, UC Santa Barbara

Starting with his work out of the bullpen as a freshman in 2019, McGreevy has shown a good feel for pitching and an ability to fill up the strike zone. His move to the rotation was cut off by the pandemic in 2020, but he’s back now and has been one of the most consistent starters in the country, walking less than one batter while striking out more than 10 per nine innings. Most intriguing has been his uptick in stuff, with a fastball up to 96 mph and sharper secondary stuff. Teams will want to make sure it holds up all season, but he’s gone from outside the Top 100 to being at least a second-rounder.

Frankly, we’re a little surprised it took this long for an arm out of Santa Barbara to make the top cut in Stock Watch. Head Coach Andrew Checketts does a great job with his staff and the Gauchos seemingly always produce good arms. The 6-foot-4-inch McGreevy did whatever he wanted against Hawaii. He’s in the conversation as one of the top 100 talents in this draft class.

McGreevy has all the qualities of a future big league starter. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, McGreevy has the frame and athleticism necessary to succeed across extensive innings. He’s armed with a really heavy fastball in the 93-96 range, touching 97 with plenty of arm-side run. He’s got a true out-pitch in a hard curveball with impressive depth. McGreevy also utilizes a slider and changeup, both of which are average more often that not.

McGreevy has a career ERA of just 2.04 including his 3.03 figure so far this season. On the year, he’s posted 35.1 innings, punching out 41 batters and issuing an impressive 5 walks. Strikeouts are up a bit this year and walks are way down; a good sign for McGreevy’s prospects as a draft-talent and potential top five round pick.

McGreevy was a Freshman All-American in 2019 after he appeared in 29 games as a multi-inning reliever and posted a 1.94 ERA in 60.1 innings. In 2020, McGreevy transitioned to a starting role and was off to a hot start, posting a 0.99 ERA over 27.1 innings, with 26 strikeouts (8.6 K/9) and seven walks (2.3 BB/9). While McGreevy’s college performance has been impressive, what has piqued the interest of scouting departments is his uptick in stuff this fall. After throwing his fastball in the 88-92 mph range in 2020, McGreevy is now sitting 92-95 mph and has been up to 97 with an improved slider as well. If McGreevy manages to hold that sort of stuff over a full 2021 season with similar performance, he could shoot up into the 2-3 round range in the draft.

Starting pitcher through and through. Throws four pithes for strikes. Fastball is a sinker with a little run. Curveball is best secondary with some good depth. Slider and changeup can both be thrown for strikes, though neither are out-pitches just yet. High floor should make for a high draft pick.

McGreevey a new name to me. Hopefully he will slip to the Mets in round 2 - seems unlikely.
