SAVAGE
VIEWS – Coming Together
June 3, 2021
Has anyone noticed that the Mets are starting to resemble
the Tampa Bay Rays. They are winning
games in spite of playing a lot of AAA players but with mostly great
pitching. The Rays continue to outperform
my expectations. Doesn’t seem to matter
who they play in the field they manage to win.
Lately, the Mets are doing a lot of the same things. Rojas has been lauded for the Mets early
season success. How about a big hand for
Jeremy Hefner and the job he has done with the pitching.
I noticed recently how the team seems to be coming together
in a good way. The bench mob continues
to shine. I really like the additions of
Billy McKinley and Mason Williams.
McKinley, especially, looks like he belongs. He has a nice approach at the bat and
defensively he has played a very solid right field. I find it hard to imagine Almora taking his
spot on the team.
It’s nice to see McCann heating up at the plate. Certainly long overdue. Rojas says he will be platooning McCann with
Nido. Not sure how that would work out. I’m a huge fan of the New York Rangers and
early last season Quinn announced that goaltending would be split between
Georgiev and Shesterkin. In effect what
Quinn was saying is that neither one was the number one goaltender. That
decision was a disaster until Shesterkin was given the nod.
Now my question is Does Nido play in the next game despite McCann
getting three hits today? Or do you go
with the hot hand. Guess we’ll find out
soon enough.
Seems having Alonso back in the lineup has had a positive
effect on Dom Smith. Nice to see him
driving the ball again. And Lindor looks
revitalized as well.
Wonder what’s happened to David Peterson. Had high expectations for him entering the
season. His confidence looks shot. We can win only so many games with just three
quality arms in the rotation. Come back
David, we need you.
I’m looking forward to deGrom’s next start against the
Padres. This may be the best team he has
faced all year. If he is able to
dominate the Padres, the Cy Young race would just about be over. Give him the award NOW and not wait until the
end of the year.
This is the first time I am writing my Thursday post on a Wednesday
evening. Sometimes it’s hard finding
time.

Very good Ray's comp
Time to write is indeed hard to find, Ray.
Almora is on a very low $$ contract. I too would be surprised to see him back before having an extended hot period in AAA if/when he is healthy. Fargas did better until imitating Almora in fence-crashing.
A platoon does not have to be 50-50. Maybe McCann-Nido becomes 65-35. If Nido slumps, 75-25 should be fine. And yes, McCann is hot - play him now almost every day until he slacks off. You need ACTIVE HITTERS against great SD pitching.
Going into the season i expected Nido to play around 25 percent of the games. I would bump that up 40 percent given his performance thus far.
I feel badly about Almora. A shame for a player to lose his job because of an injury. He ran into a wall for this team.
That said: McKinney is a lot more valuable. Williams can go back down, out of respect for the vet and fairness, but I don't think that swap helps the team much.
Hopefully they can extend Almora's rehab in AAA, maybe see if he can get his swing together.
