Tylor Megill was just promoted to AAA, IMO deservedly.
Here's the big man, by the numbers - thru 5/29 - I love good numbers:
Righty: Listed at 6'7", 230
Rep: Power fastball, power slider. A cop used his radar gun on Megill's fastball. The radar gun broke. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
Starts in 2021: 5 in AA
Ks: 42 in 26 innings. He has fanned a remarkable 42 of 104 batters faced.
Walks: 7. But only 4 in his last 25 innings. He was squeezed by a very tight strike zone (3 walks) in his first inning of the season. Ask someone what a good word is for control, if a guy walks just 4 in 25 innings. They might say "Impeccable." Mt word for it is: Megill.
ERA: 2.61.
But of his 9 earned runs, 3 were in the 6th inning of his 2nd to last start.
And 3 were in the 5th inning of his last start.
So he has been superlative in innings 1 through 4 so far this year at not allowing runs.
Total Career Innings:
Just 126 so far. In 2019, he pitched well in low A, High A, and even in a single outing in AA (9 Ks in 5 innings).
A COVID pandemic nixing the 2020 season is likely the only reason he is not a Met right now.
Conclusion?
I have not seen him in extended action, but based on the above...
He seems to have the stuff to be a power reliever in the majors - right now. Like a Trevor May, but perhaps even better in the near future.
If he stays a starter, he needs to figure out how to "stay excellent" deeper into games.
He probably needs to pile up more innings and build a track record. After all:
Jake deGrom compiled over 320 innings before his MLB debut.
Harvey? 246 innings before exploding on the Big Show.
And the Mets' current status? Pitching is largely strong and deep. A barrier to a quick ascent, it seems.
Of course, David Peterson has been highly inconsistent and more bad than good in 2021. Perhaps an opening for a guy who fans 42 of 104 batters.
As such, though, I think Tylor Megill continues to rack up innings (now in AAA) to build experience this season, and gets a call up later this year to the Mets.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's see how his AAA debut goes.
Need a thrill? Try Megill, if you will.
YESTERDAY'S METS' GAME: Peterson was quite bad. But the Mets scratched another one out with no-names everywhere. Sixteen team hits will help inflate a lot of averages and make a lot of guys exhale with relief.
One is Lindor who is 23 for his last 88 (.262) with 10 walks. Don't look at his season average. Just look at what he contributes going forward. You may smile.
Let's hope Villar does not miss much time. Villar the Iron Man tweaks his hammy - of course. Of course, JD Davis out since May 1 with a hand boo-boo - and not ready to rehab. Good grief. Of course, Jeff McNeil climbed from .196 at the end of April to .242 on May 16, pulls his hammy - and his return is nowhere in sight. Good grief. Has anyone seen Luis Guillorme, who last played April 25? Good grief. Mets hung out a Desperately Seeking Infielders sign, and I guess we'll see what a Travis Blankenhorn can do, huh?
AAA David Thompson must feel terrible to get skipped over. After a frigid start, the 3B is 20 for his last 71, with 5 doubles and 5 HRs. Blankenhorn has superior speed and is 3 years younger, and has both 2B and 3B on his resume, whereas Thomspon is a 1B/3B. I guess Blankenhorn is a better fit.
Anyway, back to Mets' success. James McCann is suddenly Da Man.
And Edwin Diaz is now 10 of 11 in saves. Quadruple that, just for effect for Edwin haters, and the numbers are 40 for 44, which sounds much more impressive. So he lost a save on a hit on a nasty slider the other night to lose his one save in that game. It happens. I just wonder, in watching it, if the hitter knew what was coming. Signals do get stolen. Just ask any Astro. Or Carlos Beltran.

Tom -
Your guy is rising quickly.
I have raised him to my highest category... RED prospect.
Current RED prospect pitchers in the sytem...
Megill (AAA)
Szapucki (AAA)
Allan - (A+ IL)
Ginn (A)
Dominguez (camp)
Tavarez (camp)
Brito (camp)
Mack, anyone who can fan 42 of 104 batters in AA is RED, that is such a key indicator, and the control has been special.
Tavares has actually gotten a few games in, a few good, one rocky. Getting in games is always the first important step.
Whatever the question is, Blankenhorn is not the answer. If Villar is going to miss some time we need to find another body. Thompson?
Thompson has heated up...I guess Blankenhorn was on taxi squad? We'llsoon see if Thompson appears. I am not sure though if Thompson is as good as former Met Zach Lutz was.
Blankenhorn was cut by another team -- a series of teams, weirdly -- and Mets grabbed him. The Mariners, maybe?
Again: Why even have minor league teams?
Megill is 25 years old. He was doing well in five starts at AA. I like the aggressive promotion to AAA.
We'll see. Looks like Mets could use another starter, unlikely Megill is going to be that guy.
Outside of the hyperbole, does anyone know how hard he actually throws?
Jimmy
