THE BIG O
One St Lucie currently ranked Mets prospect is 22 years old, and in the midst of his 22nd game, is sub-Mendoza and has 49 strikeouts. No, he is not a relief pitcher - he is a hitter. (Spoiler alert: he is not one of my Top 30 prospects, even if he is one of yours).
Another player flying under the radar is a teammate of the first guy, who is 20 and strikes out less than once per game and gets on base like mad. In the middle of his June 2 game, he had an OBP above .440.
He plays a solid third base and also has 8 errorless games at 2B and 4 at 1B.
His career stats include 555 at bats, with 38 doubles, 4 triples, 14 HRs and 90 RBIs. 13 steals, too. Gee whiz, not shabby, huh?
He shares a June 15 birthday with another Mets hitter, Dominic Smith.
The 20 year old, soon to turn 21, is not in the Top 30 though. Maybe he should be. Remove "maybe" from the prior sentence, OK?
His name is Jose Peroza.
But, you say, Jose Peraza is already with the Mets. That's true.
I said Jose Peroza. O, not A.
I don't know much about him. Maybe you don't either. Maybe we both should. He sure seems like he has potential.
In a 10 game stretch from May 19 through the first 6 innings of June 22, he went 10 for 25 with 10 walks. Screams "prospect" to me. How does getting on base 20 of 35 times work for you?
Me? Mets' prospects who spend more time on base than in the dugout make me smile.
I repeat:
I don't know much about him. Maybe you don't either. Maybe we both should. He sure seems like he has potential.
Who? The Big O....Jose PerOza.
I just wonder where he'd be if COVID didn't evaporate his 2020 season. AA? AAA?
Perhaps - just perhaps - he'd already be a top 10 Mets prospect and on everyone's radar screen.
The Big O. Not Oscar Robertson - but Jose Peroza.
In a year when so many hitters are struggling to try to hit even .200 in the Mets' minors, why not familiarize yourself with one who DOES hit?

Hey I can write about Jose Peraza if you prefer that LOL
Odorizzi wasn't signed by the Mets - and he is 0-3, ERA above 7.00 so far. Good the Mets passed.
