Allentown, PA – The Syracuse Mets began their week on the road at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with a thud, losing, 13-6, in the opener of a six-game series. The IronPigs have now won seven of the 13 games they have played against the Mets so far this season.
Early on, it looked like it may be Syracuse’s (45-55) day as the Mets got off to a good start in the first. Kramer Robertson walked to start the game, moved up to second on a groundout, sprinted to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball with Daniel Palka at the plate. Syracuse restarted the rally from there. Palka singled, followed by a two-out single from Nick Plummer that put runners on first and second. Gosuke Katoh then sliced a single into left field, and the Mets got aggressive, sending Palka around third to try and score the frame’s second run. A great throw from Chris Sharpe in left field nabbed Palka at the plate and ended the inning right then and there.
After that, it was all Lehigh Valley (55-45). The IronPigs scored the game’s next 13 runs to win by a wide margin. In the bottom of the first, Lehigh Valley scored twice to take a lead that they would never relinquish. After Jean Segura grounded out to start the inning, Dalton Guthrie and Donny Sands both walked to put runners on first and second with one out. An RBI double from Johan Camargo plated Guthrie, followed by a passed ball later in the frame that allowed Sands to come home and give the IronPigs a 2-1 lead.
It remained a 2-1 game until the bottom of the fourth, when Lehigh Valley blew it wide open. The home team scored six runs on six hits in the fateful frame, sending ten batters to the plate as they all but clinched the victory. Segura, Gurthrie, Sands, Camargo, and Nick Maton all drove in runs in the inning as Lehigh Valley took a 7-1 advantage. Sands finished the game with two runs scored and three runs driven in.
Lehigh Valley tacked on another run in the ballgame game in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Sharpe started the inning with a single, advanced to second on a balk, and scored on a RBI single from Rafael Marchan. Marchan would finish the afternoon with a brilliant stat line, going 3-for-3 with three singles, a walk, a run driven in, and two runs scored.
The IronPigs finished their carousel of scoring with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on three more hits. Sands, Camargo, and Jorge Bonifacio provided the run-producing hits. Chris Sharpe also had a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run. Lehigh Valley drew eight walks by the end of the ballgame.
It was a truly balanced attack for the IronPigs on Tuesday afternoon. All nine of their starters reached base at least once, all but one starter reached base at least twice, all but one starter had at least one hit, and seven different players scored runs. Four different players also scored at least two runs in the game.
Syracuse, to their credit, would not go away. The Mets scored the game’s final five runs in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs and nobody on base, Tzu-Wei Lin walked, advanced to second on a Francisco Álvarez single, and scored on a soft single into shallow left field by Daniel Palka. Consecutive walks by Mark Vientos and Nick Plummer scored Álvarez, followed by a three-run double from Gosuke Katoh that cleared the bases and made it 13-6. Katoh finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate. The flickering flame of an all-time comeback for the Mets was alive, but it was officially extinguished when Khalil Lee struck out and ended the game.
BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Ronny Mauricio crushed a go-ahead three-run home run in the tenth inning as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies defeated the Somerset Patriots 14-9 in a comeback victory in the series opener Tuesday night at TD Bank Ballpark. Mauricio finished 3-6 with three RBI and three runs scored.
With the game tied at nine entering extra innings and the designated runner on second, Brett Baty walked, setting up runners on first and second. That set up Mauricio, who demolished a 3-1 pitch from Tanner Myatt (1-1) to right. The Ponies would tack on two more in the frame on an error and Zach Ashford RBI single to cap off the five-run frame.
The Rumble Ponies (8-19, 36-60) were trailing 8-4 after six innings. In the seventh, they cut into the deficit on a wild pitch that scored Mauricio from third and a Nick Meyer RBI single that cut the Somerset (16-11, 60-36) lead to two.
Down 8-6 in the ninth, Mauricio led off the inning with a double to center. Two batters later, Johneshwy Fargas drove him home with an RBI single to left to make it 8-7. Luke Ritter then drilled an RBI double down the left field line that scored Fargas from first. Later in the inning, Wyatt Young hit an RBI single to center to put Binghamton up 9-8.
Somerset would tie the game at nine in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out RBI single from Blake Perkins. Perkins would finish 3-5 with a pair of two-run home runs and five RBI. Dedniel Núñez (1-0) pitched a scoreless tenth to seal the victory.
Postgame Notes: Young finished 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored and reached base five times…Meyer was 3-6 with a run scored and an RBI…the Rumble Ponies are now 4-3 in the Double-A Subway Series this year…the two teams combined for 23 runs and 28 hits…this was the Rumble Ponies first ever game at TD Bank Ballpark.
Brooklyn, NY (August 2, 2022) – The Winston-Salem Dash were able to cool down the ‘Clones on Tuesday evening, opening the series with a 4-2 win over Brooklyn. The Cyclones went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and struck out a dozen times while the Dash used a pair of home runs to propel them to the series-opening win.
Luis Moreno (1-5) made the start for Brooklyn and quickly found himself in trouble. Duke Ellis led off the game for Winston-Salem with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. On a 2-1 offering to Bryan Ramos, Ellis stole third and a throwing error from catcher Jose Mena allowed him to score the game’s first run.
Brooklyn got even in the bottom of the fourth when Nic Gaddis and Jose Peroza worked back-to-back walks. Jose Mena followed with a double off the wall in left-center field that allowed Gaddis to score, but Peroza was thrown out at the plate the keep it tied at 1-1.
Moreno settled down after some first-inning trouble, and pitched into the sixth inning but the Dash grabbed control of the game. On the first pitch of the top of the sixth Ben Norman belted a home run over the right field wall to give Winston-Salem a 2-1 edge. Two pitches later, Tyler Osik connected on his seventh home run of the season for back-to-back homers that extended the lead to 3-1.
The lead would grow to 4-1 in the top of the eighth when Alsander Womack had a sac fly to cap the scoring for Winston-Salem.
Brooklyn threatened in the bottom of the ninth after Shervyen Newton had a one-out double and Matt Rudick walked to put a pair of runners aboard. After Rowdey Jordan struck out for the second out of the frame, Stanley Consuegra laced a single into right field to score Newton and trim the deficit to 4-2 with Alex Ramirez coming to the plate. But the 19-year-old phenom, who came into the game with 18 RBI in his last 10 games, struck out with the tying runs aboard to end the game and close out Winston-Salem’s 4-2 win.
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 2, 2022) – The St. Lucie Mets scored three runs with two outs in the eighth inning to rally past the Daytona Tortugas 4-2 on Tuesday at Clover Park.
The Mets improved to 11-1 vs. the Tortugas at home this season and 17-4 overall against the Reds affiliate.
The Tortugas started the bottom of the eighth with a 2-1 lead but that was put in immediate jeopardy when center fielder Jay Allen misplayed a fly ball from Jack-Thomas Wold for a two-base error that put Wold on second base with no outs.
Daytona pitcher Julian Aguiar managed to get the next two batters out, but Omar De Los Santos hustled through first base for an infield single that scored Wold from third base to tie the game 2-2.
De Los Santos stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Carlos Dominguez bashed a go-ahead double to make it 3-2. Justin Guerrera ripped a single to bring home Dominguez for a key insurance run.
Mets reliever Benito Garcia (2-1) retired the side in order in the ninth to end the game. Garcia also pitched scoreless eighth, working around a leadoff double, to get the win.
Daytona scored its only runs on a two-run homer by Hayden Jones off MiLB rehabber Kyle Wilson in the fourth inning.
Harol Gonzalez, making his second MiLB rehab start for St. Lucie, tossed three scoreless innings.
Daytona starter Jose Acuna, who was a St. Lucie Met last week, made his organizational debut for the Reds. He was acquired in the Tyler Naquin trade between Cincinnati and New York. Acuna was impressive against his old team, limiting the Mets to one unearned run over five innings. He scattered four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six.
