Sometimes, it virtually all goes right.
The Mets? They trailed 3-0 early, then their bats thundered to the tune of 7 runs and 14 hits to fuel a 7-5 win. It finally felt like their offense offended an opponent the way you’d expect them to a lot more than they have so far this season. Hurry back, Francisco.
Jose Butto pitched less than his best, but won.
He usually pitches his best but doesn’t win.

5-0, 0.46, and 32 Ks in 19 innings. Season Saver. Who woulda guessed?
In the minors, one would expect a game where rehabbing Tylor Megill throws 4 hitless innings and fans 7, and Syracuse scores 14 runs in one inning and wins 18-3 would be the best game of the Mets day. Wrong.
In a 7 inning FCL game, the FCL Mets also won by 15 runs, in a 15-0, one hit shutout rout. Crusher.
Simon Juan’s best pro game with 3 for 5, HR, 5 RBI, and the emerging great one, Jeremy Rodriguez, already is hitting .455.
Binghamton? Won. Easily.
Brooklyn? Won. Easily.
The Cyclone’s Felipe de la Cruz tossed 5 scoreless and fanned 8.
Mr. All or Nothing At Te Plate Nolan McLean had a single, double and 3 RBIs…and of course fanned twice. He is a superb 11 for 21 when he hits the ball, but has fanned in half his plate appearances. Geez, I hope he figures out the strikeout part. His bat is thunder when he connects.
St Lucie lost 4-0. Can’t win them all. But it was still a mighty special day.
WILSON CONTRERAS
He was framed. By himself. We all saw the surveillance tape.
Setting up too close to the plate to frame a pitch, St Louis’ All Star catcher was hit by JD Martinez’s swing, breaking his left arm. Maybe breaking the Card’s 2024 pennant chances, too.
Could this be an opportunity for the Mets to trade Omar Narvaez. I don’t think so…the Cards’ next 2 catchers look better than Omar. Oh, my.
GOLDSCHMIDT IS TARNISHING
Now 36, he looks like the same guy walking up to the plate. But his results say he is washed up. Remember that if/when extending a new contract to Pete. Old guys plummet.
EVER TRY A MOVIEL SANDWICH AND SPIT IT OUT?

You know, a sandwich where the two slices of bread are dynamite, best bread ever, but the meat in the middle of the sandwich is disgusting?
Scott Moviel was a 2nd round pick for the Mets in 2007. The pitcher never got past High A. Of course.

We never get guys like Shohei. A fan just wrote: I've been watching Dodger baseball for over 60 years. Shohei Otani is the most exciting ball player I've ever seen play. Unbelievable how hard and far He consistently hits the ball!

As for two plays yesterday:
- on the radio, Howie Rose mentioned how deep in the batter’s box JD Martinez likes to stand. Hard for me to believe that Contreras doesn’t know where to set up, and I do remember Martinez doing this before. Remember one of my rule changes that I wrote this weekend? This was BS and I feel bad for Contreras. He didn’t even hit him on the glove, but rather his forearm! MLB is a joke.
- Arrenado from a few years ago makes Nido’s grounder a 5-4-3 double play and Nimmo comes up with nobody on and two outs, probably changing that whole inning. The Cardinals have two more years of Arrenado and I’m sure Goldschmidt isn’t resigned this year. That’s what happens when you keep fan favorites passed their expiration date. Mets were very fortunate last night.

Gus, the question is, was JD out of the box or not? If yes, the umps ought to enforce it. If he was in the box, Contreras was tooclose.
There ARE no guys like Shohei. Period.
Gary and Keith pointed out that Contreras had his arm much too far forward, apparently so he could frame the pitch better.
For some reason, catchers Interference call are dramatically more frequent this year.
Just to expound on Gus's point, the Mets come out of this game and this series looking good, and people will say, "Now they are going to take off". Wrong. The Cardinals gave the Mets this game; the Mets did not take it. In the Tampa series, both teams repeatedly tried to give the games away. This is not winning baseball. It is sloppy, "accept the mistakes and go on" baseball. I don't accept it and I hope that Carlos Mendoza is making clear in the clubhouse that he does not.
So why does it feel so much like besides LA, Atlanta, Baltimore and the Yanks all the other teams in baseball are just here so they have someone to play with? I still haven't figured out how LA for example can sign, according to baseball rules, over a billion dollars worth of players and we still have the highest payroll and suffer in the draft because of luxury tax penelties. As Ohtani proves almost daily that he's an alien unlike any MLB player ever and as such tilts the playing field considerably why do teams still pitch to him? The only way I see us really competing going forward is to build a killer pitching staff so guys how are we doing?
Don't think we will ever see Stewart in the OF again.

Tom, if you see the video from the on-deck circle camera that I saw on ESPN, Martinez had his entire right foot behind the back line at least six inches. It was obvious from afar. And I wrote what I wrote before I saw that video this afternoon. It doesn’t make sense that a catcher as seasoned as Contreras doesn’t know where to line up… like catchers go back and forth? It was a blatant act by a selfish hitter. He had no business being that back. Even on the line pisses me off, but this was ridiculous!!! I’m tired of people not giving a damn about others, and Martinez has done this before, as I wrote earlier!
Gus, good observation. The other day, I said that a pitcher who puts a guy on the IL should be suspended for 7 days. It is up to the ump to not let the JDs of the world do that. The umps need to enforce that, but I am not averse to a hitter getting a 7 game suspension to in a scenario like this, because ultimately, the hitter should be in the box.
