Tom Brennan: Tom’s Tidbits - 5th Team Now Active in Mets Minors; Winker Stinker; Slower Soto?

METS “WINDOR” 5-4 BEHINDA LINDOR 3 RUN BLAST

Late Monday night Mets game in Arizona.  Check the boxscores.

On to my topics:

On Saturday, May 3, the FCL Mets season began, making it 5 minor league teams in action.

Game 1 of the FCL season, and I am happy to reports that the FCL Mets lost their opener by just a single touchdown, 9-2.

Through Monday, Who is worth watching on that team?

Whoever hits and pitches well, that’s who.

FWIW, MLB.com had an article of the top 14 players in the FCL and ACL leagues.  The Mets represented none of the 14:

FOURTEEN FCL & ACL PROSPECTS TO WATCH

Through Sunday, what are the key stats for the other 4 squadrons?

SYRACUSE - W/L 15-18

33 games, 30 HRs, 141 runs, .233, 271 Ks, 13 steals.  No speed burners.

5.05 ERA.  Ugly.

BINGHAMTON - W/L 15-11

26 games, 18 HRs, 83 runs, .233. 235 Ks, 32 steals.

3.40 ERA, 270 Ks in 204 IP.  WHAT?? And a 1.18 WHIP.

- Nolan McLean just promoted to Syracuse. Dude rocks

BROOKLYN - W/L 17-9

26 games, 23 HRs, 150 runs!! .245, 46 steals, just 7 CS. "Stop, Thief!!"

3.13 ERA, and 298 Ks in 227 IP. Wow.  1.12 WHIP.

(Two Cyclones were among the minor league players of the month: … third baseman  batted .318/.383/.659 and led the league in doubles (eight), triples (three), total bases (56) and slugging percentage (.659). He finished second in hits (27), RBIs (21) and OPS (1.042) and was fourth in average (.318) and home runs (five). Brooklyn left-hander  went 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA in four starts. He allowed one earned run on 12 hits and two walks over 20 2/3 innings. He struck out 25 and held opponents to a .162 average, while his strikeout to walk ratio (12.5) was the best among starting pitchers.)

ST LUCIE - W/L 15-12

27 games, 17 HRs, 145 runs, .237. 43 of 58 in steals. 255 Ks.

3.42 ERA.  285 Ks in 245 IP.

(The third Mets minors player of the month? St. Lucie Mets outfielder  (who) batted .400/.506/.615 and led the league in average (.400), triples (four), stolen bases (14) and OPS (1.121). He was second in on-base percentage (.506) and RBIs (20) and was third in hits (26) and slugging percentage (.615) and fifth in total bases (40).)

So, Binghamton, Brooklyn and St Lucie pitchers have fanned 853 Ks in 676 IP.

That is SUPER IMPRESSIVE!

WINKER STINKER

My guy DH Jesse Winker gets put in the outfield for a rare 2025 outfield appearance on Sunday.  What could go wrong?  Naturally, he received just one defensive chance, and that is all it took, because....well, because he is a Met.  "When Nolan Gorman hit a sacrifice fly to shallow left. In an attempt to cut down the runner at home, Winker put his full force behind the throw and immediately felt a twinge in his right side."  Oh, bleak, it's an oblique tweak. He will miss the standard 6-8 weeks.

Substitute?

Baty? Well, it seemed he wouldn’t get called up to replace Winker, who is headed to the IL.  He has a sore big toe - which makes perfect sense.  He is, after all, a Met. An injured Met. BUT…later, it was decided to recall Baty, now getting his twelfth last chance opportunity.

Minter? He’ll be ready this winter. Naturally.

SOTO SLOWER BAT SPEED? ARE YOU READERS CONCERNED?

Yard Barker did a recent article on Juan Soto that, if true, would be concerning, since this is year 1 of 15.

- Please read it below and let me know if you are concerned:

Juan Soto's bat speed decline threatens Mets' $765 million investment

By Colin Cerniglia (https://www.yardbarker.com/authors/colin_cerniglia/1434)

Juan Soto's bat has slowed by 2.4 mph this season.

That seemingly small number is threatening to turn the Mets' $765 million investment into baseball's most expensive disappointment.

Through Sunday's games, the former Yankees slugger who terrorized fastballs en route to the World Series last October now appears completely lost against the same pitches that once made him elite.

The numbers tell a stark story. Soto is slashing a pedestrian .248/.374/.396 with three home runs and a .770 OPS. His OPS+ sits at 122 — above league average (100) but nowhere near the MVP-caliber 178 OPS+ he posted with the Yankees last season when he slashed .288/.419/.569.

The decline in bat speed (from 75.4 mph in 2024 to 73.0 mph this season (per Baseball Savant)) has cascaded through his performance metrics.

Year-over-year, his hard-hit rate has tumbled from 57% to 50%, while his barrel percentage has nosedived from an elite 19.7% to a pedestrian 6%.

Morning all

Those decline of bat speed numbers by Soto is a concern, especially since they are coming from a player you are going to still have under contract aflet Elon opens his first motel on Mars.

However...

one of the reasons bat swings deminish is because you are chasing balls rather than barelling up on them as they velo down the middle of the zone.

Soto is getting less to swing at everytime he stands in, which is paying huge dividends to Pete.

I wouldn't be worried. Yet.

Vientos is not adding much line up protection - yet. And Alvarez just really got back. McNeil still looks a little rusty. Might be time to move Taylor up in the line up.

Hey it's "only" 765 million so whats the problem?

Good opportunity for Baty...as soon as his toe heals. LH DH and fill in for Vientos if he doesn't come around.

Soto...the gift that will keep giving (for 15 years) Like a case of herpes.

Wow
Soto now being compared to an incurable disease

Could have been worse.

Could still be a Yankee... NOT WITH YOUR MONEY... and Marte Could be in right

My guess is just having Baty in the same pre-game batting cage is going to wake Vientos' ass up

Been told Mets were willing to go much higher

Soto was robbed of a homer on a great snag in St Louis, just missed on his double last night. He is heating up. He will be great. He won’t be Barry Bonds.

Hope Baty gets a legitimate chance to prove he belongs.
