SAVAGE VIEWS – DOC SAVAGE IS IN

At the beginning of the season if anyone said we would be 22-13 at this stage, we would be pretty pleased. However, our Mets have lost four of the last five and a feeling of gloom has set in. Especially when all four loses were winnable games.

Take a look at last Wednesday’s game against the Diamondbacks. Brandon Waddell was pitching a superb game when he was inexplicably taken out in the seventh inning after recording one out. Ryan Stanek was brought in and the end results were not good.

In contrast, in Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, McGreevey was allowed to pitch nearly six innings to secure the victory for the Cards. If McGreevey was pitching for the Mets, he would have been relieved by either Stanek or Krasnick in the seventh inning. This simply amplifies an issue I’ve had with Mendoza and his bullpen management.

Also, last week, Megill was pitching a strong game when he was relieved simply because he had exceeded 100 pitches. Seems to me that Mendoza has predetermined that a relief pitcher will enter the seventh inning regardless of the circumstances.

Pete is the leading candidate to win the MVP award for the National League. Someone needs to explain why in recent at bats with runners in scoring position with less than two outs he seemed intent on working out a walk and leaving it up to the next hitter to drive in runs. There is no way he should have been called out on borderline 3-2 strike against a mediocre lefty. I don’t mind going down swinging but to take a close pitch like that makes you wonder.

With the exception of Pete, the lineup as a whole is dreadful with runners in scoring position. Their inability to bring a runner home from third with less than two outs is concerning. The worst offender is Vientos. This year his bat has not compensated for his less than stellar fielding. I believe he would benefit by spending some time in Syracuse, Remember, he has always been a favorite of mine.

I know I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but Marte should either be traded or DFA’d. It’s not fair for him to be on a team with no set role for him. On another team, he would have a better chance to display his talents.

The next two weeks will be interesting – are we a contender or a pretender as we face off against the Cubs, Dodgers and Yankees. Finally, I don’t recall a time when umpiring has been this terrible. Balls and strikes are called at the discretion of the umpire from bat to bat depending on his mood.

Ray, maybe Marte picks it up, as he will play a lot more with Winker out for 8 weeks. But I hope he hits. He hit one good shot yesterday, but the 2B made a great play to turn it into a DP.

I've come to conclude that the starters are held back a bit because the outlook beyond the current 5 is bleak. Tidwell got shelled, Sproat has been poor, Blackburn will be ready soon, but he is at best an SP5, and Montas and Manaea are probably 6 long weeks away. They CANNOT AFFORD a starter injury, so I think they are babying them.

I've basically been offline for the last five games. The stuff you have been reading has mostly been m pre-scheduled

I warned all you that the Mets opened this season with a wussy schedule

You are not going to get away with spotty hitting, no lefty in the pen, and a manager that won't let starters pitch. Not against the next three teams being played

I don't do predictions but everybody comes down from the stratosphere at some point during a 162 season.

Looks like it's the Mets time folks

Let's hope Baty puts a lot of pressure on Vientos.

Marte, Marte, Marte...Give him a week of solid playing time, if he doesn't come to life, it's time to move on. Then give Baty a solid month playing almost every day and see if he takes the bull by the horns.

RHP Brett Banks and 1B/OF Corey Collins rehabbing in today's FCL Mets game

Joe

Nobody is going to take on Marte's contract

Good news. Think Collins may be a keeper.

There is no place on the field for Marte. Only DH and he is hitting poorly. The Met most likely to hit into a DP.

Mack, agreed. That's why I said they may have to cut bait if he doesn't improve.

Mendoza needs to send Vientos a wake-up by benching him and playing Baty at 3B for a couple of games. Marte is on Mars right now.
