MACK – NEW MET – IF – CHRISTIAN CAIRO
Cairo attended Calvary Christian High School in Clearwater,
Florida. The Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) selected him in the fourth round
(No. 130 overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft. He signed for a near-$1 million
overslot bonus. He has represented the United States in youth international
competition, including a medal at the 2016 U-15 Baseball World Cup.
Cleveland Guardians system (2019–2025): He progressed
through the minors, reaching Triple-A. In 2024, he hit .240/.354/.326 with 4
HR, 39 RBI, and 26 SB across affiliates.
In 2025 with Triple-A Columbus, he posted .237/.338/.331
with 2 HR, 28 RBI, and 33 SB in 112 games.
The Atlanta Braves selected him in the Rule 5 draft in
December 2024, but returned him to Cleveland in March 2025.
He became a free agent after the 2025 season.
Philadelphia Phillies (2025–2026): Signed a minor-league
deal in December 2025. The Phillies selected his contract in March 2026 and
optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He spent the full 2026 season there
(128 games), batting .227/.378/.298 with 4 HR, 35 RBI, and 25 SB (caught 11
times). He led the league in walks (90 BB vs. 76 K in ~516 PA; walk rate ~17.4%
exceeded his strikeout rate).
The Phillies designated him for assignment on September 13,
2026.
New York Mets (September 2026–present): The Mets claimed him
off waivers on September 15, 2026, and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse. He
was activated with Syracuse shortly after.
He has not yet debuted in MLB.
Cairo is a versatile defender who
has played shortstop, second base, third base, left field, and center field.
His strengths include an excellent plate discipline/eye
(career minor-league OBP around .359 despite low average and power), contact
orientation, speed/baserunning (130+ career stolen bases), and defensive
flexibility.
Power is limited (career
~21 HR in the minors; typically low-single-digit HR seasons and a career SLG
around .313). Career minor-league slash line is roughly .226/.359/.313.
He projects as a potential utility/depth piece or bench
option rather than an everyday starter.
He remains on the Mets’ 40-man
roster (with minor-league options remaining) and is evaluating as
organizational infield depth heading into 2027.

Found his name on the Syracuse roster when I was researching another player.
Didn’t even know he was a Met nor did I ever hear about him.
Other than that...
Not a depth piece if his career minors batting average is .226 and has no power. I like his plate discipline - we need more of that - but when you see one in the zone, you have to be able to hit it.
He can play for the Cairo Cougars over in Mesopotamia
