St. Edward's HS RHP Stephen Johnson -  98

LSU RHP Kevin Gausman – 95,  1st inning…

“The most impressive hitter I have seen this year is probably Barrett Barnes of Texas Tech from an overall standpoint. I'd pay to watch him take batting practice. He didn't perform to well in the series that I saw him though, missed at least 4-5 pitches that were big mistake pitches. However the two hits he had in the three-game series were absolutely smoked. He is the best overall hitter from this year I have seen when you combine the power and hit tools. Not as sold on him as other scouts about being able to hit for a very high average at the next level though.”

Jonathan Mayo on Max Fried –

If Thursday’s start was any indication, reports of Fried’s demise were greatly exaggerated. With a ton of scouts in attendance — every team picking in the first half of the first round was there in some fashion — Fried was back to his old self. He threw a complete-game shutout, striking out 10 and walking just one. More importantly was the bounce back of his stuff. His fastball was 90-95 mph throughout the outing. His 12-to-6 curve (72-78 mph) was sharp and he commanded it extremely well. He mixed in an effective changeup (82-84 mph). In other words, lights out.

Draft Notes – Zach Eflin, Victor Roache, Alain Girman, Barrett Barnes

Velocity is the name of the game for high school seniors. We’ll worry later about hitting the barn. Chuluota, Florida RHP Zach Eflin. started the season hitting 89 but he’s now sitting in the 91-93 range, and hitting 95. PG now has him ranked as the 19th overall pick in the June draft. Be the first on the block to mock him.

The cast has been removed from OF Victor Roache’s arm.”FINALLY got this cast off man”, he twitted... #ThankGod. I really had hoped that he would be available when the Mets pick #12, and now it looks like he will. Injuries create uncertainty and I, like most pundits are looking to other outfielders to draft. We may all be making a mistake here. A broken arm shouldn’t affect Roache’s tremendous bat speed.

Through 4-18, OF Courtney Hawkins - .321, 4-HR, 5-2B, 2-3B, 56-AB.

Walker Weickel sat 91-94 touched 95 over 4 innings. Struck out 8 walked none no runs allowed Olympia stays undefeated with 11-1 win

Did you ever pitch in high school? Think you had a great record there. How about Serra Catholic (PA) H.S. ace Alain Girman going out and throwing a no-hitter on his career 29th start for the team? Oh yeah… his career record now stands at 29-0.

PG’s Kendall Rodgers advises that Texas Tech OF Barrett Barnes’ stock is really soaring right now in terms of the draft.

Draft 2012 – Cody Poteet, Walker Weickel, Barrett Barnes, Daniel Alrich, James Ramsey

Cody Poteet — 6’-1”, RHP, Christian HS (CA)  Poteet is seen as undersized by some scouts, but his arm strength leaves little concern. He can crank his fastball up to 96 mph, and his hard mid-70s curve is one of the best in the country. His change-up is still developing but is very deceptive at times and projects to an above-average offering. He has an easy delivery and is very aggressive on the mound, attacking hitters with superb command. He keeps the ball down, showing good signs of a  ground-ball pitcher. Has been a member of Team USA since he was 14. http://www.throughthefencebaseball.com/top-50-draft-prospects-for-2012-50-thru-26/15621/

Walker Weickel, RHP, Olympia (Orlando, Fla.)  - At 6-foot-6, Weickel is a projectable arm who has shown a consistent low-90s fastball with good downhill plane. He's displayed depth with a slow curveball and a change that lacks sink but brings deception due to his arm speed. Weickel, a Miami commit, has first-round abilities and shouldn't stay on the board long come June. http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/baseball/post/_/id/940/mccullers-jr-is-top-florida-diamond-star

We continue the countdown today at number 19 with Texas Tech junior outfielder Barrett Barnes. He is a 2009 graduate of Class 5A Fort Bend High School in Austin, Texas where earned varsity letters in baseball and was coached by Randy Ursery and Kenneth Sharp. He was named First-Team All-District for his senior season. Barnes made an immediate impact in the Red Raiders lineup starting all 57 games last season. He ended up leading the team with a .341 batting average while hitting 14 homers and driving in 53 runs. He also chipped in with 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts. He was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-Big 12 Second Team. He was also named to multiple Freshman All-American teams including Baseball America First Team, Louisville Slugger, and Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA. http://ht.ly/1gDyfS

We continue the countdown today at number 18 with redshirt sophomore outfielder Daniel Aldrich from the College of Charleston. He went to Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina where he player for coach Jeff Blankenship. As a senior, he hit.461 with 43 RBI while leading the state with 13 homers. He was a two-time All-State selection.  In 2010, he participated in six games with one start hitting .167 and two RBI before shutting it down. He received a medical redshirt for the season. http://ht.ly/1gEQYg  In 2011, he returned for his redshirt freshman season where he tore up the Southern Conference hitting .347 with 22 homers and 77 RBI. He picked up several national awards including being named NCBWA Freshman Player of the Year, Collegiate Baseball National Freshman of the Year, SoCon Freshman of the Year while being selected as Louisville Slugger All-American, NCBWA All-American and ABCA/Rawlings All-American.

After batting .364/.444/.593 as a junior in 2011, James Ramsey was selected by the Twins in the 22nd round of the draft.  Ramsey then had an All-Star season at the Cape. Ramsey makes consistent contact despite a swing that is a bit long.  Ramsey led the ACC in total bases in 2011.  Other than his bat, Ramsey’s tools are average.  He profiles as a leftfielder at the next level. Ramsey does possess all of the intangibles.  He is an very hard worker and goes all out on the field.  Ramsey is also a great student. If Ramsey turns in another good season as a senior, his draft stock should rise, but it is limited due to his lack of outstanding tools. http://mlbdraftguide.com/1/2012/01/10/james-ramsey-2012-draft-profile/
