NY Daily News Back Page, 8/27/2015

2015, the last year the Mets made the World Series.  This daily post will detail the game by game journey to the Fall Classic.  Click here for More Mets History and Calendar Classics.

Year: 2015; Game #126; Wednesday;  Aug 26, NYM 9 @ PHI; 4; boxscore;   WP: Colon; LP: Eickhoff;  Save: Clippard; Time: 03:16; NIGHT; Attendance: 22,184; Record: 70-56; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 6.5; W;

Curtis Granderson RF: 1 for 5; 2B; 2 runs; 1 K; Yoenis Céspedes CF-LF: 2 for 5; 3B; 2 runs; 1 RBI; 1 K; Daniel Murphy 2B: 1 for 4; SF; 1 run; 2 RBIs; Michael Cuddyer 1B: 3 for 5; HR,2B; 2 runs; 3 RBIs; 1 K; Wilmer Flores SS: 2 for 5; Michael Conforto LF: 2 for 4; 2B; 1 run; 1 RBI; Tyler Clippard P: 0 for 1; Juan Uribe 3B: 1 for 2; 1 RBI; 2 walks; Anthony Recker C: 0 for 4; GDP; 2 Ks; Bartolo Colón P: 0 for 3; 1 K; Juan Lagares CF: 0 for 1; 1 run; Bartolo Colón, W (11-11): 7 innings; no runs; 5 hits; 2 walks; 8 Ks; Eric O'Flaherty: 0.2 inning; 3 runs; 3 ERs; 2 hits; 1 walk; Carlos Torres: 0 inning; 1 run; 1 hit; Tyler Clippard, S (19): 1.1 innings; no runs; 1 hit; 2 Ks;

NY Post: Bartolo Colon dominates as Mets pound pitiful Phillies again. "Colon (11-11) threw seven shutout innings, as he allowed five hits and walked two. It was a much-needed strong start for the Mets, who endured short outings from Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard the previous two nights...Michael Cuddyer gave the Mets a cushion with a monstrous two-run homer in the eighth that reached the second deck in left field. In the ninth, the Mets received additional insurance runs on Curtis Granderson’s RBI double, Yoenis Cespedes’ ensuing triple and a Daniel Murphy sacrifice fly."

ESPN.com: "[The Phillies] rallied against the bullpen in the eighth. Andres Blanco had an RBI groundout against Eric O'Flaherty and Cameron Rupp hit a two-run double off Carlos Torres. Pinch-hitter Jeff Francoeur had an RBI single off Tyler Clippard, but the righty struck out Darnell Sweeney to leave two runners on. Clippard got the final four outs for his 19th save and second with the Mets."

Nationals lose 6-5 to the Padres to drop 6 and a half back of the 1st place Mets.

NY Post: Mets alone in first place after offense, Colon steamroll Marlins. “The Mets (56-50) made this one a runaway and won their fourth straight. Michael Conforto’s first major-league homer, a three-run blast in the second, set the tone and Yoenis Cespedes finished with three doubles and four RBIs. The Nationals lost 6-4 to the Diamondbacks and fell one game behind the Mets.”

ESPN.com: "Bartolo Colon (W,10-10) won for the first time since June 12 after dropping his previous six decisions. He pitched eight innings, allowing one run and seven hits. With his win Monday, Colon joined Tom Glavine as the only Mets to win 10 or more games in their age-40 season or later."

Baseball Reference:Another trade almost gets consumed, as the Mets are on the verge of trading IF Wilmer Flores and P Zack Wheeler to Milwaukee for OF Carlos Gomez. The rumor of the deal sweeps through the stands at Citi Field, and Flores breaks into tears on the field as he does not want to leave a team that has grown into a contender. The trade falls through, however, and the Mets lose, 7 - 3, to San Diego in spite of three homers by Lucas Duda.

NY Post: Duda belts 3 HRs but Colon clubbed as Mets fall to Padres. "Duda on Wednesday enjoyed what would be a good month for some as he continued his recent home-run barrage with three solo shots — giving him six homers in four games...Colon, who has a 6.16 ERA in his last seven starts, gave up two runs in each of the first three innings."

Nationals beat the Marlins 7-2 to move back to 2 games ahead of the Mets.

NY Post: Mets avoid no-hitter but not humiliation as Kershaw crushes. “Hey, they broke up a perfect game in the seventh…Kershaw, perfect through six innings, ran his scoreless streak to 29 consecutive innings with a three-hit, 11-strikeout, no-walk, 3-0 complete-game win Thursday at Citi Field…[Bartolo] Colon yielded a solo homer to Jimmy Rollins in the third inning and then Kershaw took it from there, notching his third straight game with double-digit strikeouts.”

Nationals fall to the Pirates 7-3 so the Mets stay 3 games back of 1st.

NY Post: Colon gets lit up by Cardinals as Mets keep stumbling. "In his second-worst start of the season, Colon allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with three walks and a hit batter over 4 ¹/₃ innings. The Cardinals turned the game into a runaway in the fifth, when Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer against reliever Carlos Torres that made it 8-0. Grichuk’s three-run blast in the eighth against Alex Torres completed the scoring. Jason Heyward also had a huge night, with a 5-for-5 performance for the Cardinals.”

Mets don't lose any ground to Washington as the Dodgers beat the Nationals 4-2.

Open Thread - Trio of Mets on the HOF ballot

MLB recently announced that three Met favorites will be on the ballot for the Hall of Fame.

David Wright was a seven-time all-star who is among the greatest to play the game in a Mets uniform.  His lifetime slash line was .296/.376/.491.  He holds a lifetime WAR of 49.2 and was a 2 time gold glove and 2 time silver slugger.  He holds Mets records for many categories, including hits, walks, HBP, total bases,  and RBI.

Jose Reyes was a four-time all-star with a NL batting title and was also a sliver slugger award winner.  His lifetime WAR was 37.4.  Among the most exciting Mets players to watch, Reyes holds Mets records for stolen bases, triples, and lead-off home runs.

Bartolo Colon earned most of his significant baseball accomplishments with other teams, but very quickly became a fan favorite with the Mets and recorded one of the all-time great Mets highlights when the comically-light hitting pitcher hit a home run on May 7, 2016 against another pitcher on the ballot, the Padres' James Shields.  "Big Sexy" finished his career with a 247-188 record, a 4.12 ERA, and 2,535 strikeouts.  Colon's 247 wins are the most among Latin American-born pitchers

It is tough to get in to the Hall Of Fame, and the two former Mets will be vying for the writers' votes with other very accomplished players.  Also newly on the ballot are players Adrian Beltré, Joe Mauer, Chase Utley, Matt Holliday, Adrián González, José Bautista, Brandon Phillips, Victor Martinez, and James Shields.

How many ballots do you think it will take to get Wright, Reyes, and Colon in?

Flash: Mets Re-Sign SP Bartolo Colon

       Per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets and right handed SP Bartolo Colon have agreed to a 1 year contract worth $7.25M. Colon reportedly had better offers on the table from other teams but wanted to remain with the Mets due to his love for the Mets' fans, his teammates, and the organization.

     Colon figures to slot into the #5 SP role behind Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, and Matz until RHSP Zack Wheeler is ready to return from Tommy John surgery. Last season, Bartolo made 31 starts for the Mets and posted a 14-13 record with a 4.16 ERA. Fielding Independent Performance (FIP) metrics indicated that Colon should have gotten better results (3.84 ERA) than what his actual ERA was.

The Morning Report 12.10.2015 | Mets Trade for 2B Neil Walker, Sign Free Agent SS Asdrubal Cabrera, Interested in Bringing Back SP Bartolo Colon

Chris Cwik | Yahoo Big League Stew-  After losing out on Ben Zobrist, the New York Mets decided to go another direction at second base. The team traded pitcher Jon Niese to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for second baseman Neil Walker. The move all but guarantees playoff hero Daniel Murphy will not return to the club next season. The move also enables the Mets to send Herrera to the minors for more seasoning in preparation of him taking over the full-time role once Walker leaves.  Herrera came into last season as a top-50 prospect according to Baseball America, but hit just .211 during his limited call up.

(Chris Soto: After sleeping on this trade overnight, I am still quite happy with the move. The club was able to fill a position of concern, trade from their team' strength without diminishing said strength, and provided the opportunity to get Herrera some more seasoning, as well as, open up some competition for the 5th spot in the rotation. Adding Walker only adds $1-2m of payroll vs. the $15m it would have required to add Zobrist. Lastly, with a rotation spot open, the club can now bring back Bartolo Colon on a 1 yr low salary deal to be a solid bridge till Zack Wheeler is healthy again. Let's say he signs for $5M per season....the net gain in funds for the off--season ends up being $8m that can be used elsewhere to improve the team.)

Associated Press | CBS New York- The Mets now have nice depth in their infield. Hours after trading for second baseman Neil Walker on Wednesday, the Amazin’s agreed to a two-year, $18.5 million contract with veteran shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. The 30-year-old switch-hitter is viewed as an offensive upgrade over Wilmer Flores. Over his nine-year career, Cabrera is .267 hitter with a .329 on-base percentage and a .740 OPS. Cabrera’s best season came with the Cleveland Indians back in 2011 when he was an All-Star and finished with a career-high 25 homers and 92 RBI.

(Chris Soto: Well....there goes the $8m per season I was talking about. As much as we love Flores' hitting potential, the fact of the matter is, his bat left much to be desired even at SS let alone at the more offensive oriented 2B position. His bat was supposed to make up for his defensive shortcomings but unfortunately he has done nothing but post below league average numbers in both departments. Defensively, Asdrubal is not that great at SS either, but he has surer hands and better instincts at the position that can limit the damage. Offensively, he's had some down years [2013, 2014] but most of his other seasons he is usually one of the Top 5 offensive SS in baseball. He even garnered some MVP votes in 2011 when he launched 25 HRs for the Cleveland Indians.)

Danny Abriano | Rising Apple- The Mets will likely re-sign RHP Bartolo Colon, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. With Niese now in Pittsburgh, bringing Colon back makes perfect sense. Ideally, Colon will be in the starting rotation until Zack Wheeler returns from Tommy John surgery in June or July. Once Wheeler is back, Colon can shift to the bullpen — where he excelled in the postseason. Or, if the Mets are comfortable with their fallback options during the summer, they could always trade Colon to a team in need of rotation help. If the Mets don’t sign Colon or another starting pitcher, Logan Verrett would be an option, and Sean Gilmartin has experience starting as well. The Mets could also potentially turn to Rafael Montero, who missed the majority of last season due to shoulder issues, but who is due to begin pitching in winter ball next week.

(Chris Soto: I love the idea of bringing back Bartolo on a 1yr low salary deal. Not only is he a consistent Innings eater who can take pressure off the bullpen, but he's just a flat out great clubhouse guy. He knows how to have fun and enjoy the NYC market. Sure he has his occassional blow-ups on the mound whenever he doesn't have fastball command but the fans love him, and more importantly, the young arms in the rotation gravitate to him and learn about his mastery of pure fastball command. There is no risk to signing him back on.)

HOT STOVE REPORT (courtesy of mlbtraderumor.com)
  • Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that the Colorado Rockies are taking offers on all 3 of their OF's Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon, and Corey Dickerson.
  • The Phillies traded young RH closer Ken Giles to the Houston Astros for RHSP Vincent Velasquez, LHSP Brett Oberholtzer, OF Derek Fisher, and RHP Thomas Eshelman.

(Chris Soto: That's a solid haul for Giles and it's one that the Mets could actually top if they made Familia available for trade.....but that isn't going to happen.

     The Rockies making Charlie Blackmon available is extremely enticing. Blackmon has 3 yrs left of cost control left via arbitration and he has a massive amount of speed that can extremely valuable at the top of a batting order. His speed also helps mitigate the fact that you should be expecting some power decline moving from Coors Field to Citi Field. He isn't rated as a good defender in CF, but there is a TON of ground to cover in Coors so a move to Citi Field's smaller dimensions could be helpful. He's certainly worth taking a look at.)
