outfielder Derek Fisher has been
named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week of the
2014 season. Fisher hit .455 in three weekend games as Virginia posted two wins
in the Hughes Brothers Challenge in Wilmington, N.C. Fisher had at least one
hit in all three games to lead the top-ranked Cavaliers, who bounced back from
an opening loss to Kentucky with wins over VMI and UNC Wilmington. The Rexmont,
Pa., native had two hits in each of Virginia’s wins, including two that drove
in runs in Sunday’s 7-2 victory over UNCW. Fisher scored five times in the

of Connecticut pitcher Carson Cross,
who was the top local prospect for this year’s Major League Baseball draft,
will have shoulder surgery and miss his entire college season, the school said
earlier this month. UConn, which opens its season Friday against Ohio State in
Port Charlotte, Fla., said Cross, a Brentwood native who starred at Exeter High
School, would have surgery performed by specialist Dr. James Andrews. He will
have one season of college eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-5 Cross was
drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round last June but opted to
return to UConn for his redshirt junior year. Last spring he was the staff ace,
going 9-4 with a 2.44 ERA, 86 strikeouts and 24 walks. His 110.2 innings led
