Draft 14 – Michael Cederoth, Kyle Schwarber, Chris Ellis, Cobi Johnson, Matt Imhof

2-26-14 - During his sophomore season last year, Michael Cederoth made 15 appearances — all starts, going 3-9 with a 4.25 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 95.1 innings. He held opponents to a .213 batting average. but walked 48 batters. “It’s almost better for us to just put him in the closer’s role where he can go an inning and you have a chance to use him all three days.” Cederoth has three relief appearances since the switch. 3-25-14 – 3.  Kyle Schwarber, Indiana, Height: 6'0", Weight: 230 DOB: 3/5/1993 L/R - Lefty bat, Schwarber is going to get a lot of hype, maybe more than Pentecost.  He might have a better power profile than Max, maybe among the leaders in the class.  But he may not stick at C, he isn't a premium athlete, so you're looking at a move most likely to 1B, and then the bat really has to play.  Still, dingerz attract attention.  Quick!  When does Seattle pick again? There aren't nearly the same number of hyped HS catchers this year.  HS catchers tend to be hyped and then fade at draft-time.  A lot go to school.  I think this was one factor for John Riley - he had to compete not only with classmates but the new HS guys 3 years later, to try and get into the top 200.  The Giants offered the cashish to get in that area, and its a done deal.  Not everybody is going in the top 15, there is too much competition.  For whatever reason, the catchers get weeded out a bit more fiercely. 2-27-14 – TTF - 10 college players on the rise - Chris Ellis, RHP, Ole Miss (65) - A breakout candidate by several draft experts, the 6’-5”, 210 pound right-hander didn’t come in with much of a track record. As a sophomore, he posted a 5.57 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 16 K/11 BB over 21 innings. The stuff, however, has always been there, even if the results haven’t. He features a low/mid-90s fastball that he commands better in the low-90s. His change-up is much improved and he adds a solid curveball to round out a classic three-pitch mix. His size, stuff and command have him in talks for the first round and, this year, the results have been there. He tossed a five-hit shutout against Georgia State on Friday striking out four to no walks. 2-11-14 – PG/Florida HS Dream Team – Best Command: Cobi Johnson, Sr. James W. Mitchell - Johnson’s father, Dane, is a pitching coordinator for the Toronto Blue Jays, and he has passed his knowledge on to his son, Cobi. The younger Johnson has a knack for getting and staying ahead of hitters, and fills up the strike zone with all of his pitches. He shows plus control of his fastball in the lower half of the zone, which he is able to execute thanks to using his 6-foot-4 frame to generate sharp downhill plane. 2-21-14 – Project Insider -  Perhaps the best pitching matchup of the weekend is in L.A. where Cal Poly lefty Matt Imhof and UCLA ace James Kaprielian (class of 2015) face off at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Imhof is considered a Day 1 possibility but more likely an early Day 2 prospect — which is to say round 2 or so. 2-11-14 – PG/Florida HS Dream Team – P – Cobi Johnson, Sr. James W. Mitchell - Johnson brings a high baseball IQ on the mound, going out there with a game plan that he executes. It is easy to project the 6-foot-4, 180-pound Johnson to throw in the mid-90s one day and he is already throwing 93 mph, but he dominates his outings as though he was showing the big fastball velocity. At 6’-0” and 170 pounds, he also shows some raw power in his swing and excellent bat speed. A quick-twitch athlete with a lot of upside. 10-19 – BLF – Luke Weaver - Fastball:  Weaver shows a 91 to 94 mph Fastball with good tailing action. Secondary Pitches: Weaver throws a slider that shows flashes of plus potential and sits in the low 80s.  It sometimes shows a sweeping action and at times a harder break, once he is able to find a consistency in the slider it will be easier to grade.  But both have plus potential. Command: He shows excellent command and pounds the lower half of the strike zone.  He isn’t afraid  to pound the inner have of the  plate with all his pitches. 10-18-13 – Matt Garroich – Derek Fisher at Virginia was highly touted out of high school, I had him 20th overall in the draft, and he has done nothing to hurt his stock while a Cavalier. 9-27-13 - Carlos Rodon is the clear favorite to go No. 1 overall next June. He claimed that status during his 2012 freshman season with North Carolina State. He solidified it last spring, when he led NCAA Division I with 184 strikeouts in 132 1/3 innings and carried the Wolfpack to its first College World Series berth since 1968, and strengthened his case during a banner summer with Team USA. If Rodon already were an Astro, he'd face some stiff competition in what I consider baseball's best farm system (more on that in a second). 8-21-13 – Area Code Games - 5. Kodi Medeiros, lhp, Waiakea, Hilo, Hawaii/Big Island Wood Bat League - The 6-foot-1, 191-pound Medeiros has a compact, muscular build with broad, sloped shoulders, a wide chest and strong lower half. He is one of the most interesting players in the class because although he is unconventional and he comes from a remote location, his stuff is electric. Medeiros has a leg kick that pushes toward center field, and his arm path is high in the back with a whip-like action before releasing at a slot just above sidearm. This angle gives all of his pitches tremendous movement. His 90-92 mph fastball that touched 93 has at least plus armside run and sink. Hitters were unable to lift the ball out of the infield in his two innings. His upper-70s slider is a plus pitch with abrupt movement, 3-to-7 lateral tilt and power. Medeiros also mixes in a 78-80 changeup with lots of armside fade that has above-average potential. He is currently uncommitted and will choose between Pepperdine, Oregon, Arizona and UCLA in the fall. If Medeiros is drafted in the first round, he will be the highest drafted Hawaiian high schooler ever, a title currently held by Bronson Sardinha, who was drafted 34th overall in the 2001 supplemental first round. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/area-code-games-top-10-prospects/

9-21-13 – RHP Drew Weston is an uncommitted righthander from San Marcos, Calif., who may not be uncommitted for much longer. Repeating his low three-quarters arm slot well on all pitches, Weston topped at 88 mph with consistent, hard arm-side run, never getting above the hitter's mid-thigh. With a balanced delivery and a loose, easy arm action, he gets nice fade on his changeup, which was up to 78 mph, and also throws a tight spinning curveball. When the ball was put in play, it wasn't barreled up, inducing routine ground balls for his fielders. Has a strong arm capable of pop times in the 1.9-2.0 second range. Vallot is one of the youngest players in the class and will not turn 18 until the end of the minor league season next year

I got a chance to see him hit when the Collegiate National team played at Kane County, and I was extremely impressed by the way he handles himself at the plate — waiting for his pitch and driving it to the gaps with ease. He hit .328/.447/.526 over 65 games as a sophomore with 11 home runs and 41 walks. He’s not going to steal many bases, and he will most likely end up in left field. 8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - *Nick Gordon (Olympia High School; Fla.) certainly can play shortstop, and obviously has the arm strength to stick at shortstop, but I’m not in love with the swing. He has a tendency to glide, and I’m not sure he’s going to be more than a gap hitter at the next level. 8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 29. Cobi Johnson, RHP, James Mitchell HS (FL) - At 6’-4” and 180 pounds, the right-hander has the ideal size for a frontline starter. His fastball has touched 93 mph, and he adds a solid curveball. His change-up, like most prep pitchers, is still developing, but he shows a  good feel for pitching, and his athleticism will help with his progression. He has shown very good command of his stuff and had 103 K/14 BB over 71 innings as a junior. He also hit .426/.508/.703 over 30 games with 18 stolen bases. His velocity does drop off in later innings, but he should gain more stamina as he fills out his frame. He struck out three in one perfect inning at the PG Classic. Mitchell HS (Fla.): The son of former big leaguer Dane Johnson, the big right-hander was very efficient, throwing just 28 pitches over three innings. 7-24-13  -  Scott Hurst, of, Bishop Amat, La Puente., Calif./San Gabriel Valley Arsenal - Hurst has a compact, athletic build and broad chest at 6-foot, 180 pounds. He has at least an above-average arm and plus speed, giving the Cal State Fullerston commit a chance to be a strong defender. With a simple setup, quiet stride and balanced swing, Hurst has good contact ability and bat speed. Zach Shannon, RF, Anderson HS (OH) - 6'2/220, R/R, Draft Day Age: 17.96, Ohio State commit - Quick Take: Shannon has a plus arm in right field and is 91-94 mph with a plus 78-81 mph slider on the mound but has an ugly arm action so scouts prefer him as a hitter.
