Cardinals Reach Agreement With James Ramsey 

Michael Roth‏ -   “One. Last. Time.” 

Roth started on three days of rest for the third time in his career. The previous two were the 2010 and 2011 championship clinchers. 

2009 Konnor Wade Scouting Report  -

Konner Wade is a 2010 RHP with a 6'3'', 180 lb. frame from Scottsdale, AZ who attends Chaparral HS. Slender long athletic frame, will add strength, projects. Standard delivery, hides ball well, tends to fall off a bit on release, fast whippy arm action, less fluid from stretch. FB upper 80's with consistent big tailing action, works outside half to RHH'ers. CB has short SL type break, occ sharp with some sweeping action, more power could make into SL, turns over Chg to get sinking action. Athletic mound actions, could become very good defensive 3B, sound hitting approach. Bat projects. Good future on the mound. Good student.

Ariz-USC 2013 Draft Eligibles:

                                    Ariz – LF – Johnny Field – comes in 5-8 in the series… .375 on the season with 43-BB… excellent shot to center in the first, but right at CF Marzilli…

                                    Ariz – SP – James Farris –  3 complete games this year… pounds the zone… gave up only 18-BBs… 88-91-FB in 1^st… came into this game not having pithed for two weeks… lots of first pitch strikes… 29 pitches, 21 for strikes by Farris through three… 42 P, 30 strikes, thru 4… 81-SL…

Draft Notes 5-20-12 – Chris Beck, Kurt Heyer, Mark Appel, Trent Black, Brian Johnson

Chris Beck:

A meh outing for a supposed blue chipper: 6.0-IP, 6-H, 4-R, 2-ER, 7-K, 1-BB. From team recap: “The runs gave Chris Beck (Jefferson, Ga.) his first win since April 6th at Davidson. Beck (5-7) allowed four runs - two earned runs - on six hits over six strong frames. Beck gave up three runs over the first three frames but settled down to strike out six batters over the final three frames.”

Mack Projection: I’m just not high on this kid. He pitches against inferior teams. I have him in the sup-1 round.

Kurt Heyer:

This one was for the draft boards:  8.0-IP, 6-H, 1-ER, 4-K, 2-BB. From team recap: “Heyer improved to 10-2 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 2.20 with eight strong innings. The right-hander allowed just one run on six hits, struck out four and walked only two.”

Mack projection:  Kurt will be picked on the first day in the sup-1 round.

Mark Appel:

Perfect timing for the scouts Friday night: 9.0-IP, CH- 0-R, 4-H, 13-K, 1-BB. This should lock up the first pitcher taken in the draft. From team recap: “Appel retired 12 in a row until in the middle innings-- five by strikeout, until back-to-back singles in the sixth. Appel twice struck out the side after giving up hits, in the second and sixth innings.”

Mack projection: Hmm.. 4^th pick behind Zunino, Buxton, and Zimmer

Trent Black:

Who the heck is Trent Black? I don’t think I ever typed his name before. The 6-2 RHP Baylor (42-13) senior put seven scoreless inning on Texas (29-20) Friday night, raising his seasonal record to 10-1. From team recap: “With the win, Blank (10-1) posted the 15th double-digit wins total in a single season in program history. He allowed only five singles, struck out five, walked one and threw 96 pitches in 7.0 shutout innings to lower his season ERA to 2.11.”

Mack projection: I have no idea. Seniors usually are third day picks.

Brian Johnson:

Florida (40-15) LHSP Brian Johnson waited for the right moment to show his best Friday against Auburn (29-26). From site: “Johnson (6-4) matched his season and career high with a seven-inning stint in which he allowed just two singles and an unearned run, with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Mack projection: This outing alone returns him to a late first round pick.

Draft 2012 – Chris Taylor, Lucas Sims, Victor Roache, Kurt Heyer

Chris Taylor is a shortstop with a strong arm and he can be moved around the field to play either third as well as in the outfield. He has a very solid arm for a shortstop, but can use another year in college to help develop the batting portion of his game. He had 41 strike outs and 77 hits in 256 at bats for last season. His OBP for 2011 was .378 and he is also fast enough to get a stolen base. He had 10 in the 2011 season. Draft Projection: Taylor can go in the top three rounds of this draft and be a good young impact player for a team needing a shortstop or a third baseman with a strong arm. He's not a well know player, so he can most likely go past three rounds ending up as a valuable steal in the draft.  http://www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/3165

Lucas Sims — 6’-2”, RHP, Brookwood HS (GA) - Sims has one of the liveliest arms in the draft. His fastball can touch 98 mph, and his 12-6 hammer curve can be filthy at times. His change-up is still developing and his control needs to be more consistent but his potential will land him in the first round. Went 4-1 with a 2.38 ERA with 52 strikeouts over 32 innings as a junior in 2011. Has a bulldog mentality on the mound, attacking hitters without fear. Victor Roache / Georgia Southern / OF: Roache’s game is about power and bat speed. He  has rare amounts of those two qualities and that allows him to launch some majestic home runs. He is still a fairly raw prospect for a college junior but that has both positives and negatives. Roache wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school and he hasn’t gotten much exposure to high quality instruction. So he has perhaps more upside and growth left in his game than you’d expect for someone this age. Roache actually improved (particularly some polish in his swing mechanics) from the time I saw him earlier in the summer to when I attended games later in the season. My biggest concern with Roache is where his body ends up. He’s already a thick 6-1 at 225 lbs with a large lower half. While he’s fairly athletic for that size now, he’s already in an outfield corner and will have to stay on top of his body. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2012/01/scouting-the-cape/#more-720

We continue the countdown today at number 10 with junior RHP Kurt Heyer from Arizona. He is 6’2 and 196 pounds from Huntington Beach California and attended Edison High School where he played under Steve Lambright. As a senior, he had an 11-3 record with a 0.84 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 100 innings bringing the team to the CIF Championship game against Capistrano Valley. He picked up several awards including being named All-CIF First Team, 2009 EA Sports Second Team All-American and a league Pitcher of the Year. He decided to attend college at Arizona where he made an immediate impact on the Wildcats program becoming the team’s Friday night starter. He made 17 appearances (16 starts) as he had a 7-4 record with a team low 3.26 ERA in 102.0 innings. He ended up striking out 109 batters while walking only 29. Batters also struggled against him as they only hit .255. He was named to the Pac-10 All-League team while being named an All-American from Baseball America. Nolan Fontana:


6-10-11: - http://www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=20869  Florida sophomore Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) was named as a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award on Friday by the College Baseball Hall of Fame. The list features 10 of the nation’s finest Division I shortstops. Fontana has started 63 games this season for the top-ranked Gators (48-16), is hitting .309 and boasts team highs in walks (45), sacrifice flies (eight) and triples (five). He has scored 52 runs, totaled 44 RBI, poked 12 doubles and stolen six bases in 10 attempts. Fontana was a second-team All-SEC recipient and a member of the league’s All-Defensive Team for the second-straight year.


Robert Refsnyder


Arizona sophomore OF Robert Refsnyder‘s batting average has not dipped below .318 since the opening week of the year; he has hovered in the .340+ range for most of that time; his weekly stat-line of 6-for-15 (.400) with 1 2B, 2 3B’s, 2 HR’s, and 8 RBI’s has been fairly typical for Refsnyder each week (minus the multiple dingers); this past week he showed emerging power that he has only flashed sporadically throughout the season; if the power continues to develop more consistently, Refsnyder will have to be talked about as a potential top 10 pick in the 2012 MLB Draft… http://www.prospectnation.com/blog/?p=695 


Kurt Heyer:


6-8-11: - http://thegoldensombrero.com/wordpress/archives/4056?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter  - With Whitney graduating from U of A a couple of weeks ago, I thought I should write up the ace of that staff, sophomore Kurt Heyer. Heyer had a truly remarkable season as the Friday-nighter for Arizona posting a 2.41 ERA in 130.2 IP with 128 K’s and only 25 BB. His numbers were stellar, and Heyer will be one of the top arms in the PAC-10 in 2012 as well. Heyer has terrific sink on his fastball, which allowed him to keep the ball in the yard quite well despite the thin Tucson air. He only allowed 5 homers and 25 XBH’s in his 19 2011 starts. Heyer’s fastball works in the low to mid-90’s with good arm-side run and sink. His slider has decent tilt and projects as a 60 pitch in the pro’s. His changeup is behind, but it still has a chance at a solid-average grading come next June. Heyer’s command and ability to keep the ball on the ground are terrific. His body projects well at 6’2” and 198 lbs. With an arm slot in the low to mid-3/4 range and a strong lower half, there are no obvious red flags in his delivery.



Brian Johnson:


6-10-11: - http://www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=20870  - Sophomore Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) was named as one of the 10 semifinalists for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award announced by The College Baseball Hall of Fame on Friday. The winner of the Olerud Award will be announced in Lubbock, Texas, on July 3 as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions. A first-team All-SEC selection, Johnson has compiled an 8-3 record with a 3.66 earned run average in 15 starts on the mound spanning 78.2 innings. The left-hander is second on the Orange and Blue with 70 strikeouts and has limited opponents to a .248 batting average. Johnson is hitting .312 with 27 RBI, 26 runs and 17 extra-base hits (10 doubles, five homers and two triples).

The son of the former big leaguer of the same name, he has the chance to be much better than his dad, with a fastball that can touch the upper 90s and signs of a plus slider.
