Greenville 5, Sand Gnats 3

The Sand Gnats were in control of the first half of the game but in the second half things unraveled as the Greenville Drive came from behind for a, 5-3, win over the Sand Gnats Monday night at Fluor Field. All-Star starter Robert Carson (6-6) no-hit the Drive through the first five innings before they busted through for four runs in the sixth inning to take a lead they’d never give back.

Pete Hissey hit a slow grounder towards second base that Josh Satin was able to get to and throw on target to first but the speed of Hissey allowed him to beat the throw. That started what would be the final inning for Carson as Zach Gentile singled inside the left field line to put two on with no outs.

Ryan Dent followed with a double to the base of the wall in left to score Hissey and put runners at second and third for catcher Ryan Lavarnway. Lavarnway struck out for a big first out and then Carson induced a sharp ground ball to third off the bat of Jered Stanley for what would appear to be the second out.

Instead, the ball kicked around at the feet of Jefry Marte allowing Gentile to break for home. Marte’s throw sailed toward the backstop and Gentile scored the tying run. Things didn’t get any better from that point on as Will Middlebrooks hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Dent from third to give the Drive the lead.

Josh Satin’s two-run home run in the fourth inning initially gave the Gnats the lead. It was Satin’s third home run of the year. Wilmer Flores and Raul Reyes each went 2-for-3 in a losing effort for Savannah.

The Gnats (6-6, 41-41) look for a series win tomorrow with Troy, N.Y. native Eric Beaulac (4-4, 2.74) on the hill. Beaulac fanned a team season-high nine in his last outing versus Asheville. It’s a special 11:05 a.m. first pitch from Fluor Field at the West End with all the action carried live on STAR AM 1400.
